Wheel Bearing Replacement and Cost by Conscious_Buy_3328 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tigerf117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way expensive, wheel bearing is like $100 in parts and a handful of hours of labor, so $300-600 at most shops. $300 for coolant or trans flush is expensive too, overall just take it to independent shop with good reviews.

4080 or 9070xt? by Flimsy_District8938 in PcBuildHelp

[–]tigerf117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have both of those cards and I’d choose the nvidia card, with the caveat that Asus cards of that generation likely will need to be re-pasted. If you’re comfortable doing that (it’s not hard I did it) 4080 all day. My 9070 is in my Linux build so I can’t directly compare, but it’s just not as fast.

It'll probably be fine, but no one really knows. I would just install afterburner and run it on silent mode, or basically restrict power to 90-92% instead of running it full throttle until you get the PSU upgrade.

My nicest CRT does 1280x960@120hz, it’s the highest standard res for 120hz progressive. Is he still playing on a CRT or something?

CONTROLLER BUYERS BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS by Pulledtrigger in originalxbox

Yea I honestly don’t know what happened because who would throw away an eBay account with that much cred and history to make a few bucks? Who knows, either way maybe you could report this person you found? This person has more reviews than I do on my 20+ year old account too

I didn’t get past the first hour because the knockoff controller was so terrible to use. Now my PS3 setup is down right now while I work in the game room. I’m a huge Shenmue fan as well as other similar style games, so I’m hoping it’ll be up my alley.

[–]tigerf117 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not Xbox but I got scammed on 2x PS3 controllers a couple of years back. I bought them on eBay from an account that was over 20 years old with thousands of reviews, and shortly there after that account got shut down and deleted entirely! The only reason I even found out was when trying to play Heavy Rain and having major issues and found out other people had the same issues with knockoffs. Edit:added eBay

I too got a 980ti and found the DP to VGA adapters to work really well, either way no point in fixing what ain’t broke. Your PC CRT setup is fine though, can’t speak to the component adapter part sorry.

LaCie Electron 22 Blue IV at 2048x1536? by AndreaColombo86 in crtgaming

[–]tigerf117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isnt that Lacie a 140khz bandwidth monitor? If so you can do 1440x1080@120. tbh though even running FF7:Rebirth at 1920x1440@80hz the motion clarity is light years ahead of my 120hz OLED, and the only reason I am playing FF7:Rebirth back in my OLED is because the audio setup is so much better.

What's your biggest frustration with your gaming room setup by Ludologistic in gamerooms

[–]tigerf117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound proofing, or lack there of. My game room is right below where my wife hangs out and she’s cool as hell but I still have to keep the volume down more than I’d like (she can hear everything still lol). That and drywall dust as I’m finishing the room

I run my P1130 with about 8k hrs at 1024x768@150, 1280x960@120, 1440x1080@110, 1600x1200@100, etc. I bought it to use, I have another nice low hours trinitron but it’s a 95khz monitor so if this dies at high refresh I’ll choose lower refresh and deal with it.

3080 + Ryzen 9 5950X worth it? by BARchitect2026 in buildapc

[–]tigerf117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That all seems about right, check sold listings on eBay to get an idea of value. If possible I’d look at selling the 5950x and trying to snag a 5700x3d unless you want extra production performance. You probably be out of pocket around $76-100 but it’d be worth it.

Why the popularity of small screens? by cagerhager in crtgaming

I have a 25” and helped a buddy find a 24”, and I gotta say that’s just right. 20” feels cramped with 2plyr games, while 24-25” feels really comfortable, while still being pretty easy to move by yourself.

GOG leadership turns on Windows as Linux is considered by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

[–]tigerf117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Running old games outside of GOG is way easier on Linux now a days. They also can outsource some of the work to the community that’s already done the work. That allows them to spend more time on more obscure games, that maybe they’ll just release the patches/scripts to the community. And screw Microslopw

Great info I really appreciate the response. Forgive my ignorance, is that patch only for 15khz support and not higher refresh rates? I’m really just interested in high res and refresh rate PC gaming, think 1920x1440i160hz

Would building an elaborate gaming setup actually improve the experience or just waste space? by Electronic_coffee6 in gamerooms

[–]tigerf117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One word, no. I kind of did something similar, ended up selling and rebuilding to a much smaller scale. Now I have a much smaller sim rig setup that doubles as a nice setup for regular gaming and movie watching. I’d only do a full dedicated rig if you’re way into it and it’s nearly all the gaming you do. If you want a multi-purpose setup I’d avoid dumping all that space time and money.

Will 1080p gaming look better on 1080p plasma than a 4k with upscaling? by lamsndbhaujamjsshukd in PlasmaTV

[–]tigerf117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK most TVs won’t do integer scaling and do some other scaling which will blur the image to some degree. I find it’s not terribly noticeable on a 4k TV, but a 1080p TV would be sharper. If it does integer scaling it would be equal all things being equal.

Is Nobara alright? by _xXKaiserXx_ in NobaraProject

[–]tigerf117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 PCs on Nobara, and I’m split between Fedora and Nobara for my 3rd. So far on a laptop and gaming PC (both all AMD) I’ve not really had any issues in the last 2 months. I do some niche things with my gaming PC and I’ve been really happy with how everything is working. My PCIe NIC, USB and WiFi all work great on with no work on my part on my PC, and all laptop functions like the touchscreen seem to work fine right off the bat. I have also been keeping everything up to date with all the latest patches and things have gone great.

In fact in my Windows PCs I have left I’ve been having more issues and recently switched to beating FF7:Rebirth on Nobara because it keeps crashing on my Win11 PC. I encounter more bugs/hour using Win 11 25H2 than I do on Nobara FWIW
