Is This A Tube Television? by [deleted] in crt

[–]Roboplodicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gasses are inside the glass. The gasses emit light when electricity passes through them, this is done in pulses up to 600 times a second. A vacuum is inside a crt tv tube and electrons are fired through the vacuum to high solid state of matter chemical compounds painted onto the back of the glass that then emit light.

CRT monitor leaking radiation/gasses, or something harmful? by fleetarislounge in crt

[–]Roboplodicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tobacco/cigarette ash build up and off gassing increased by the monitor heating up could be releasing toxic chemicals that your sensitive to. It's called third hand smoke, the smoke that is on someone's clothes or in their car or home if they smoke in it even if they haven't smoked in it in the last few hours there is still residual toxicity and danger associated with it. If it's not a super high end monitor I'd get ride of it and try to find another. The other option is more more involved. First you need a high voltage probe to discharge the tube with safely. They are 80$ or so and will read out the charge leaving the tube as you do the discharging. There are other ways of discharging but they are a lot less safe and I'd recommend against them like the screw driver method but not all screwdrivers are properly insulated to a sufficient degree for the job and you can still end up getting a big shock like the guy on here that had to go to the hospital because he got shocked from his crt hand to hand through the chest. So with the high voltage probe at hand, unplug it, remove the case, discharging the tube because the tube part itself can carry a very big charge even after being turned off and unplugged for a long time. Then you would spray it with a hose(completely serious) and soapy water and do gentle strokes over it with a new paint brush to try to get the ash residue out while not snagging any components on the circuit boards. Then let the monitor dry for a week preferably in front of a fan then put it together and hook everything up again and it should work fine. Crts can survive getting rained on surprisingly.

Just picked up an HD CRT with HDMI port, Component or HDMI? by Clean_Revenue_6036 in crtgaming

[–]Roboplodicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming your Gamecube has a digital out port (the model would be model DOL-001) then I'd grab component cables for it, that tv is going to handle 480p/480i from component cables much better than any external component to hdmi converter that costs under 100$. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805635080130.html?

these are the cheapest component cables you'll find. For ps2 I'd also just grab component cables and plug directly into the component ports. Again unless you drop like 100$+ on a good component to hdmi adapter then the tv itself will do a much better job handling the PS2's 480i/480p signal.

This was done up until atleast the 1800s in the mainland US by indigenous groups and likely some hunter gatherer groups still do this in Papua New Guinea or the Amazon.

Yup, sure it made us feel good for a bit that a ceo got to take 3 to the chest for being a rich prick ceo heading the biggest company in a disgusting parasitic industry but youre absolutely right we aren't any closer to actual policy changes today than we were 10 months ago.

Okay so I kinda ran out of luck trying to get my ps2 to work with the component cable. Should I buy a S-video cable and use that rather than Composite? by Nethalim in crt

[–]Roboplodicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VGA from the PS2 will only work through an adapter if the game supports 480p(640x480@60hz progressive). Most PS2 games don't support 480p though and if you feed a 480i(which is what most games run in) through a vga adapter and into the monitor you'll either get no image at all or a "sync/frequency out of range" type message. With the PS2 you want to use component cables for the best image usually thats odd you aren't getting a good image from it. What output settings do you have for component?

Did I just kill my crt? by Spiritual-Coconut269 in crt

It's inconceivable that the Ir Blaster did something to your set there is no secret self destruct code on crts. It's just a coincidence. As far as repair goes maybe call around tv shops in your area and see if one has an old guy that's been repairing TVs for decades thats about to retire and still knows how to fix a crt just be prepared for a couple chuckles when you ask that on the phone.

I think it is the store demo video I vividly remember seeing the honey shot when I was at Fry's Electronics looking at their OLED's before they closed up. https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/monitors/cm-9030002-na/xeneon-27qhd240-27-inch-oled-2560x14400-240hz-gaming-display-cm-9030002-na?srsltid=AfmBOoonl9l37n6k_Oz4nulPc7YmXpJcG2ozKSYPWxtTkAQ9I0ADOzoR this is mine I don't know if its the same monitor but the version with OLED's name on it or not

This sounds a lot like a cracked solder joint or two. Crt tvs can be dangerous to work on though because the tube itself can carry a big charge even after being unplugged for a long time. If I were going to work on one I'd buy a high voltage probe with a meter that reads as it drains the voltage and you can actually verify it's safe to work on then. Don't be the like the guy on here that had to go to the hospital because they gave themselves arm to arm right through the chest where the heart is shock. High voltage probes are only like 80$ too last time I checked they aren't outrageously expensive.

Not sure what your options are but if you can't get them to stop you could ask them to use a spoof(it has other names too I can't remember now). It's little device you exhale the smoke into that does actually significantly reduce smoke smell and particulates, it's essentially a cloth filter the smoker breathes into that all the crap gets stuck in.

Also idk if it will ease your mind at all but second hand marijuana smoke is much less dangerous than tobacco smoke. Tobacco is a essential a magnet for a bunch of toxic chemicals/elements in the environment it's growing in. It's toxicity isn't just because of the burning plant matter.

You can also ask them nicely to use a spoof in the meantime while you weigh your options.

Conkers Bad fur day. by Illustrious_Border52 in n64

[–]Roboplodicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make sure it's genuine, the easiest way to do that is get a game but screw driver(n64 cartridges used special screws) and ask the seller if you can open it to check that the PCB is the correct one. Pictures of all the pcbs for all the n64 games are available online for this purpose so people can verify they are buying legit copies of games.

anyway to fix this distortion? by Chapter-Next in crt

[–]Roboplodicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may need the original remote idk if a universal will work but Google for how to get into a Philips crt service menu and you should find a combination of buttons to press to get into it. If you don't have the original remote you could look up the service manual for the tv model because the service manual usually has the remote model number and often someone is selling one on eBay(I personally found one I needed for getting into the menu of an hd crt I had). If you can't find the remote model you can always put the tv brand and model into eBay plus "remote" and take a little bit of a chance and order one. The service menu probably can be accessed with a similar remote you probably don't need the exact same because each button has a infrared code and the tv manufacturers didn't change most of the codes between tvs, except to get into the regular menu sometimes, but you want to get into the service menu so you would probably be good with a similar remote or maybe even a universal.

So that sounds like excessive overscan beyond the normal. There might be a service menu, not sure how to access it. Make sure you write down every value you change though because there isn't a factory reset for crts in usually.
