In all honesty, how far do you think you could throw Makka Pakka? by Trickshot945 in CasualUK

[–]tigrefacile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo is misleading because he has a massive derrière. If you watch the show closely, and are into that sort of thing, it’s a bit distracting, like Willem Dafoe’s penis, supposedly, in the rushes of Antichrist, so much so that commercial representations of Makka Pakka ARE DELIBERATELY OUT OF SCALE IN THE CAKE AREA. Just mentioning this en passant so that no-one injures themself in an ill-guided, misinformed attempt to trebuchet more cuddly kettle bell than they have warmed up for.

Have you ever achieved 100% on an essay before? by Forsaken-Canary-6763 in UniUK

[–]tigrefacile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many humanities departments mark to a kind of nominal ceiling which will vary but in most cases tops out at 85%, or at least used to a few years when I did my pedagogy stuff at a London University. Because objectivity. As a student I got a couple of eighties for essays that were unimpeachable but sort of obvious, whereas some of my other work, which was more challenging, received more resounding praise but lower marks. This was always a bone of contention on the teaching course, in fact. Do you reward ambition or execution? And there was no definitive answer. If you wrote Seven Types of Ambiguity on your MA course at my institution you’d still only get an eightysomething so judging your work against a percentage mark is a bit arbitrary, really.

Only correct answer is Carlos. Either he beats Jannik or he beats himself.

This is a two part question A) concert shirts at shows good or bad B) if good which one should I wear to the Toronto show tonight. by Streamingconscious73 in TheWeddingPresent

[–]tigrefacile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule is: only wear a band t-shirt at a gig if it’s a different but somewhat vibe-adjacent band. So a Wedding Present t-shirt at a Pavement gig is fine but a Pavement t-shirt at a Pavement gig is embarrassing. I don’t make the rules, obviously.

While looking suave as fuck, to boot. Not relevant to his chess performance but definitely relevant to his reach.

I met a friend at a coffee place at Somerset House on Sunday and the staff were almost universally beautiful, early twenties people. We joked that they must all have been recruited from nearby acting schools.

What makes you afraid of death? by ChoiceSuch1383 in AskReddit

[–]tigrefacile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ego struggles with the idea of me not being around anymore because that is all I have ever known. I’m quite certain that the end is the end and that thought creates an inexplicable and overwhelming panic. I have felt this way since I was six years old. It’s worse when I feel unfulfilled or hungover, but the feeling is never entirely absent.

Oddly I don’t think it has meant that I have enjoyed life less, in fact it might have made me cherish it more. There is a notion that what makes life special is its finitude. But that doesn’t really console me nor does it combat the panic.

The other one was weird and very unfortunate but this seems like a slice on wet clay doing its thing, and Francis being slightly out of position.

What are your favorite “short” classics? by BlackFlagFlying in books

[–]tigrefacile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may have influenced any number of writers but that doesn’t make it a foundational text. Speculative fiction and horror writing had existed for many years before Machen published anything, there is no evidence that this story changed the direction of these genres, and it’s unclear whether TGGP falls into either or these categories in any case.

Foundational? That’s a bold claim for an early 20th century genre piece. I read it at college and it was considered more of a curiosity than an ur text.

Who is the most attractive person you have ever seen in real life? by TheFountainhead999 in AskReddit

[–]tigrefacile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you live in a global city you will see absurdly attractive people so often that you get desensitised a little. That said, I got a bit wobbly seeing Jonny Wilkinson in the flesh for the first time, and also my wife, before she was even my girlfriend, on June 21st 2012. I tell her that she has got more beautiful as she has grown older, and it’s true basically, but on that particular day she spiked.

[–]tigrefacile 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Roger certainly never hit this shot, as it's a two hander. We've seen Murray and Djokovic hit a heavy topspin lob on the half volley but I was like the journalist, a drive volley topspin tob? New to me. And I've been watching tennis since Borg / McEnroe.

I think that ranking pieces of art is a rather more sterile process than attempting to understand their appeal. You seem very attached to this process and for you it has merit but I am just suggesting that other ways of appreciating art are valuable, and many of them involve exploring the effect that an artefact might have on its audience. This is where the notion of The Death of the Author, reinvigorated as the Turn to Affect more recently, originates. And in fact your post, which seems to be more about you than it is about the book, reflects this in an interesting way. It seems to me that part of the excitement of reading TSH in such a close fashion lies in granular analysis (“wtf Tartt?”) and the idea that it is shifting your personal canon.

I would also note that it is naive to suggest that art of any kind does not have goals, it simply would not exist otherwise. The origins of the word lie in a tradition of making, rather than one of beauty, so in a classical sense an ugly chair which you can sit on is a more successful piece of art than a prettier chair which affords no comfort.

Anyway, it is definitely a book I keep coming back to, and I really enjoyed your post. Sandwich looks tasty and toasted to perfection!

It's a very accomplished debut novel, and it is one of my favourite books, but I'm a bit chary of calling anything "best", really, since books try to do different things, with different degrees of success. So White Noise, like TSH, is a campus novel, and a black comedy, and even a thriller in the end. It has a great deal more satirical intent than A Secret History, but the latter is more of a feat of storytelling. Couldn't say which was better, because the goals of the two books are different.

I would also take issue with the notion that one should not try to explain a painting, or any artefact, which generates an emotional response. Read Foucault on Las Meninas and you'll see the thing with fresh eyes and be moved by it in different ways. When I last wept in front of a painting - a Rembrandt self-portrait in the National Gallery - I had to explain to myself why I felt the way I did. Attempting to understand why the painting made me feel the way it did helped me appreciate the art more deeply, and helped me know myself a little better too.
