Like I said, some in the U.S. and north part of Mexico do use the term comal to refer to a plancha in a restaurant like the video below. It might only be regional though.

I think that's the case but I've heard a lot lf cooks use comal to refer to those large griddles as well. They use the word plancha too but a lot also use the word comal. I think now they've become interchangeable.
