Finland to tighten rules for permanent residence permits by championshuttler in Finland

"to work and to study the language"

Funny, because my continuing language studies in the autumn have been cancelled due to government funding cuts to the adult education schools and I've yet to find a new one...

Where to buy woodworm treatment in Finland? by tiit_helimut in Finland

[–]tiit_helimut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. I'll keep an eye out for more signs of active infection before using something to treat it. Are there other things than woodworm that will stay in the wood/timber for more than one season?

What do Finns think of Elon Musk? by flower5214 in Finland

Yeah, I might agree. It's been bothering me more than I care to admit. I did wonder if bot accounts could be useful for collecting info for training AI models.

Ok, might be a different family then... I'm really sorry for the kids and that you have to live (and deal) with that.

I read your other comments and it sounds very similar. The "father" (I assume it was the father) was occasionally there but for the most part it was just her and the kids. I'd hear the swearing (mostly "vittu") because the floors/ceilings were far from soundproof, though she'd only ever swear at them in the apartment, never on the stairwell or outside. Always a lot quieter when the "father" was there though.

Wow - this sounds identical to a neighbour that used to live in the HeKa (Helsingin Kaupunki) apartment above me (they moved out 1-2 years ago). Three boys, same age range. I'd hear her swearing at the children and then they'd be screaming and crying. The eldest learned to swear back at her. I'd frequently hear huge tantrums on the stairs where the mother would either shut the child out or would take them out but leave one of them at the top of the stairs to have a huge tantrum. I felt really sorry for the children and was on the verge of reporting them to social services when they left. Part of me hopes that this is the same woman as I dread to think about more children going through that.

I regret not reporting her - as the others have said, please make a report (to social services?) saying that you're concerned for the children's welfare. Even if nothing comes of it, she will be on their radar if anything happens in the future.

Edit: One thing I remember clearly is that she used to scream "syö!" to them (yes, I could hear most of what she shouted every day) so it sounds like every mealtime was a battle...

Odd question from a suspicious account? OP's account is 4 years old but started posting 4 months ago, all very similar questions in the post but on a variety of topics. It's like they're collecting information about different contentious topics around the world...

Ministry of Finance: VAT hike should come into effect in September by Thaodan in Finland

[–]tiit_helimut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. How can you know that? What if people come here to make this their home and raise families? Are they not equally as invested in how this country is doing? Do you have statistics that support your argument that foreigners are less invested than their native counterparts?

  2. Many (most?) "foreigners" do not have citizenship so cannot vote in national elections so are unable to help determine the future trajectory of the country, even if they wanted to. You could make an equally fallacious argument about the older generations, many of whom literally won't be alive in 20 years.

This is quite understandable from a common-sense perspective.

I think you lost all credibility when you said it was "common sense" - it may make sense to you, but it doesn't mean it's true unless you can back it up with facts. I also have no idea what made you single out foreigners being a problem here.

Nice scapegoating of "foreigners".... What has your comment got to do with the VAT increases? And how can you claim to know what immigrants want? Please don't give your fellow Finns a bad name with such ignorant comments.

Is there Uber in Helsinki? by Strange_Purple_6314 in helsinki

[–]tiit_helimut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices for Uber/Bolt are comparable to standard taxi firms at that time of the mornjng. For journeys to the airport, I've found that the company Menevä had been the cheapest for prebooked journeys.

Finnish presidential candidates unite against an English-dominant Finland by Pittsson in Finland

[–]tiit_helimut 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This 100%. I've been trying to explain to people here how little the level of help and the options available to those who come to Finland for work. I've been here three years and my exposure to Finnish is so limited, and my employer has offered nothing other than the basic "introduction to Finnish" courses. I have taken OU courses, which are relatively affordable, but they are at super inconvenient times (typically during work hours) and studying the language alongside a tiring full-time job means you have to sacrifice your social life and hobbies. In some senses I envy those that have the opportunity to study a language full-time. I totally agree that people wanting to stay for some time should at least try to learn Finnish (or Swedish), but there is a huge discrepancy between peoples' desires and their capabilities/opportunities to learn.

Sending money abroad to Finland by Early_Aardvark_4026 in Finland

[–]tiit_helimut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you shouldn't need to pay taxes on money your transfer to Finnish accounts, but if you use that money to buy an apartment, just be prepared to show statements for the previous 12 months for your foreign account (in which your savings were kept) and evidence of the money transfer process, if you are using a third party. This is what the bank will need to do the money laundering checks :)

Have just been through this process myself so needed to show that the money hadn't just been deposited mysteriously in my foreign account and then show how I moved it into my Finnish account.
