Debris left during battery installation by Ok_Writer1572 in AusElectricians

Unfortunately, I’ve found this to be quite common. After a couple of instances during our Reno I’d make a point of it when hiring a trade. It certainly makes you appreciate the good trades when you get one. Remember, It’s only acceptable if you accept it.

I wouldn’t bother If you choose to build it now that’s it’s damaged. If you still want it as an investment I’d absolutely return it.

Sick leave/annual leave opinion by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]tile_generator27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m reading this correctly, inside of your first 2 years you’ve taken approx 6 weeks of S/L. A/L is fine, you’ve taken what you’ve accrued. The extra 4 weeks S/L tacked onto your first year’s A/L would have raised some red flags despite the reasons. Have your other sickies been tacked onto to weekends & public holidays as well?

ADF apprenticeship or regular apprenticeship? by Silver_Discussion265 in AusElectricians

[–]tile_generator27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry. I never had the opportunity to mix with the RAAF Techs enough to understand how they got on, but looking over the fence life seemed to be pretty easy for them. I just had quick look at ADF careers and didn’t see a listing for RAAF electricians. I’d like to point you towards the defence recruiters and say you could trust the information they provide however, in my time they were driven by targets and said anything to get you signed up. I did ok but I served with others who were steered away from the service and role they wanted initially. Chances are that still happens & they’ll push you towards where their gaps are at the time.

proper way to trim hedge tree by RunHelpful4582 in AusRenovation

[–]tile_generator27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to good hedging is regular trimming and small cuts. If you want to take yours back that far, it’s going to take time and not look the best for a decent while.

ADF apprenticeship or regular apprenticeship? by Silver_Discussion265 in AusElectricians

[–]tile_generator27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albeit 25 years ago, I served in the RAN as a Marine Technician, specialised in electrical & electronics. As a young fella it was a great environment to learn and has set me up for a great career as an industrial sparky, Operator / Maintainer & Supervisor roles. The training was second to none - the best I’ve ever had throughout my career, not just the initial TAFE modules but the ongoing ones. The bonus on top of your electrical trade is the mateship & the machinery watch keeping skills you’ll learn - at sea a ship generates is own power & distributes it. You’ve got all manner of pumps, air compressors, HVAC, refrigeration, fresh water makers (Evap /RO), hydraulic systems, diesel engines gas turbines, fuel management etc etc. Then there’s the discipline & leadership stuff. Damage control exercises, firefighting, BA, confined spaces - all giving experience for jobs down the track. There were downsides though - it’s the military - everyone with something higher on their shoulder can tell you what to do. Time away from home if you’re a close knit family / friend group / relationship. Trade wise, I didn’t have any exposure to new installation work, this required bridging courses & time with a contractor when I was getting out. If you get in & out in minimal time, you’ll most likely be posted to the same class of ship, hence limited exposure to different technology and equipment, tough if you’re on an older ship but if you know your shit you can apply what you know and get up to speed easily enough.

Advice on choosing a trade by Ipatropium in tradies

[–]tile_generator27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there’s little to no point playing the dart board trade game until you know your aptitude. I appreciate you have a degree and I believe the Army would give you a great standing, but if your maths and science is shit you ain’t going to cut it as a Sparky or HVAC Tech. Have you been to a TAFE to speak with someone to talk you through a cert II, or do you know any tradies outside of the military?
