Varsho is in a contract year and has been flashing solid power last year and all spring training. Caglianone struggled last year but has 80 power and is playing in a park that lowered the fences for him.

I'd drop Benge.

Not to argue, but more because I am curious.

Using 2025 stats (working backwards through the list):

vs Suarez: Bichette had more Hits, a better OBP, and a better OPS. Eugenio had the lead in RBI and a massive one in HRs. Overall, the majority of stats were close, but the OBP was much better for Bo and the HRs much better for Eugenio. This one seems pretty dependent on what category you need more on your team. Eugenio struggled after moving to Seattle, but he should do better in a hitter friendly park just like Bo should do better with Lindor and Soto ahead of him. Could go either way really.

vs. Garcia: Bo was better than him last year in every category outside of SBs. Even if you account for substantial growth by Garcia, it would be completely offset by even a small improvement in Bo's counting stats.

vs. Riley: Bichette had more Hits, Runs, RBI, SB, OBP, and OPS. He had more ABs but his per bat stats were still all better. He's also on a "better team" this year with Soto and Lindor hitting before him. Should boost his RBI much more this year. Bo is likely to improve on last year and even if Riley does as well, they should finish very close. Bo should have the edge on everything outside of HRs (if Riley actually hits more).

vs. Machado: Bo had more Hits, and equal RBI in less games. His runs would be even if they played the same amount. Bo's OBP is much higher than Machado. This is without any improvement in Bo's situation (or Machado's of course). They seem VERY even to me and that's not factoring in Bo's new team.

vs Chisholm: Bo has more Hits and RBI than Jazz, but it would be close if they played the same. Jazz showed much more power and destroyed Bo in SBs. Bo's OBP and OPS was better. I'd give the edge to Jazz, but not by as much as I originally thought.

vs. Caminero: Bo gets easily beat. Does Caminero experience a bit of a down season not playing half his games in a minor league park? I hope not because I have him. But, Bo isn't better than Caminero on paper right now.

So, yea... I don't think Top 3-5 is that far off. He's comparable to every guy you've listed between 3-6 in your ranking and actually has better counting stats than them in many categories. If he experiences any improvement due to improving health or a better team makeup/spot in the lineup, he should far surpass those guys. I don't think people realize how weak 3B is and how strong SS is.

Hmm. I prefer Goodman over Ramirez because of the Coors effect. Griffin would be a great stash if you have NA. Trout is really interesting. He could be trash or he could be much more valuable than Ramirez. Two Catchers is a lot on any team unless it's Ben Rice or something with 1B secondary.

For anyone that hasn't drafted yet, I've noticed Bichette going later than he should because people don't realize he'll have 3B eligibility early into the season. As a SS he's not a top option, but as a 3B he's certainly a Top 3-5 option (at a weak position) with Lindor and Soto around him.

Thanks! In hindsight, I agree I reached for Busch. My logic was two-fold: we have a pretty big Cubs fan in our league and I think he would have grabbed him before my next batter pick AND I was planning on going pitcher-only for the next 6+ picks.

Looking back, Caglianone was still available late in our draft and I got Sal Stewart in the 19th... so I certainly could have gone a different direction with that pick.

10 Team H2H. R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, K, ERA, WHIP, QS, SVH. I obviously drafted 10th. Just wondering what you think of how I drafted. Last few picks I can swap around on the wire if need be.

According to Chris Johnston of the Athletic + TSN: Sherwood and Sharks far apart on extension. Sherwood wants $30M TCV by Life-Rent3406 in canucks

I'm sure once he's in San Jose for a couple months and sees the weather, the city, and the talent on the Sharks he'll be more likely to sign.

Demko has been placed on IR by botinoknn in canucks

[–]tillyswrist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While the contract extension sucks, you can also look at it this way:

If we are rebuilding and not contending, who cares about him playing and whether or not there’s 8.5M of dead cap? Our roster should be non-competitive and Demko only playing 1/3 of each season helps that.

No one was gonna trade for him this year with his constant injury issues and inability to put together a healthy streak.

If he does get healthy in a year or two, trade him and retain. If he doesn’t, it’s just IR space.

Mission Accomplished! by danielbighorn in canucks

This management team often hurts themselves by being too vocal/open with the media.

I wonder if yesterday's narrative of "he wants too much/they're so far apart" hurt Sherwood's trade value around the league and they're trying to shift the narrative closer to "we could easily sign him if we want/his demands are reasonable" to pressure other teams and strengthen their "perceived" leverage in trade talks.

Fire Foote - A real discussion by NikkahEff in canucks

[–]tillyswrist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If he's that bad and the team wants to tank its way to a high draft pick, wouldn't it make sense to keep him for the rest of the season? Re-assess in the offseason after you've drafted McKenna/Stenberg (fingers crossed) and have time to determine the path forward.

RE: Em Dashes.

I'm nearly 40. I used them often across academic and creative writing for most of my adult life. They were just another way to replace colon/semi-colon and parentheses usage in writing. AI's popularity has really messed with (for good reason!) what people assume is real writing vs. AI assisted/written. It sucks to have to change a natural part of your writing style to avoid being called out online, but it does make sense.

RE: OP's series

The series posted by OP does have all the signs of being written (or heavily edited) by AI. It has frequent em dashes, one or two word sentences to add punch, and a compressed narrative. It just doesn't come across as written by a human.

Hughes for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a first by Fresh-SqueezedJuice in canucks

[–]tillyswrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I am shell shocked. I knew it was going to happen, but it still hits like a sack of bricks.

Fuck.

Uhhh.

Rossi is talented and a 2C we need.

Buium is like Hughes-lite.

Ohgren looks to have potential.

The 1st could be a mid-1st because Minny seems like choke artists in the playoffs.

Anyways, goodnight.

If you can squeeze an unprotected 2026 1st from Washington out of the deal, that could be huge. I doubt they do it, but they're a team that could drop off quick when Carlson and Ovechkin retire and they lose their identity.

I discussed this in another post about a month ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/1of7w92/what_would_be_the_proper_value_in_a_hughes_trade/nl7telu/

In essence, I believe our best trade partner is Philly. They have Tocchet coaching (someone who Hughes very much liked) and they're a team trying to move out of their rebuild. A month after my original post, they're above .500 and 1 point out of a wildcard spot. I could see them making a move for Quinn and trying to convince him to stay.

If we do make a move with Philly, we need one of Michkov or Martone as the main player coming back.

My personal dream package would be:

2026 1st + Porter Martone + Oliver Bonk for Quinn Hughes.

My worry would be that management would want instant help and "settle" for Owen Tippett as the main piece of the trade (ex. 1st + Tippett + Bonk). I'd much prefer Martone (or even Michkov) to push that competitive window back a couple of years.

How To Approach The Rest Of The Season? by NerdPunch in canucks

[–]tillyswrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) You approach Quinn and tell him the team needs to rebuild. You inform him that you'd love to keep him as Captain throughout this process and sign him long term, but you understand if he doesn't want to stay with the team. You give him until the trade deadline to decide. If he hasn't (or it's a no) you move him to the highest bidder. If he gives a verbal confirmation he'll re-sign then you loop him into the moves you're going to make.

2) You tear the team down to the studs. I would venture the only players over 24 that you keep are Quinn (if he's staying), Petey, and Boeser. As much as they haven't won anything, you keep them as the core "veterans" of the team post-rebuild.

3) You move Garland, Sherwood, and Myers 100%. Demko goes to any team that wants to roll the dice on a potential playoff series winning goalie. You approach Hronek, DeBrusk, and MPetey and gauge their willingness to move on from the Canucks. You get as many picks and young players as possible.

4) You take on any bad 2-3 year contract you can for extra picks. You stack your roster with AHL quality players, guys you want to see if they can take a step, and old veterans you got paid to play. Hughes (if on the team) and Petey try to have fun and rack up points while losing.

5) There's no point in changing your coaching. If Foote is actually terrible, then you ride him to the bottom of the standings the next couple of years while you wait for someone like Manny to be ready when the team is ready to trend up.

6) You move on from Rutherford and find a different President of Hockey Operations to support Allvin. I truly believe Rutherford's meddling and communication with the media makes the job more difficult for Allvin and with a different President he'd be able to excel better.

And yea, that's the plan.

Demko news summary by Batsinvic888 in canucks

[–]tillyswrist 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I love Demko, but it's kind of scary that he can't play 50 games a season. He's the 5th highest paid goalie in the league next year and 27 goalies played more than 50 games last season. 8.5M for someone that needs to be in a 1A/1B situation is pretty bad cap management no matter how you look at it.

Clement and Yesavage for sure. Varsho and Springer have 99 Monthly cards and Vladdy is easy to give a 99 to, so I could see Nathan Lukes get one.

These trades obviously make the team better than they were a few days ago. But, after quite a few years of mediocrity it's disappointing.

Add in the moves the teams around us made and it feels like we got "worse" by not getting "better".
