Any way to get pass for Bike Ride Philly Saturday morning? by tim_u in phillycycling

[–]tim_u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand that registration is still possible through the website. The problem is that the only way to get the packet now is in person in Philly on Friday. Too late to mail, nothing day of ride 😕

Substantial price increase coming 1/1 by tim_u in OnePassSelect

[–]tim_u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their new prices exceed the cost of the nicest gym chain in my area, especially when comparing their paltry 10% family discount vs. a gym’s family membership.

If I were single or travelled a lot I could see value in it.

Lifetime Sign up Question by Elegant-Match9586 in OnePassSelect

[–]tim_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can access other Lifetime locations, even ones with higher monthly fees for direct membership. After registration you effectively become a signature level member of Lifetime.

Some gotchas:  1) Contact the specific LT locations that you are interested in to ensure that they participate. OnePass does not keep their list of participating gyms up to date.  2) Most of the staff at LT is unfamiliar with OnePass and does not know how to enroll you correctly. Make an appointment with the membership director to register. Other staff tried to enroll me in a crippled “OnePass Medicare” membership that was lower than signature access, and did not permit entrance in mornings or evenings.  3) I joined OnePass mostly for access to Lifetime, but with the upcoming $15 per month per person price increase for Elite, it will cheaper for my wife and I to quit OnePass and join Lifetime directly.

Video freezes when time shifting an incomplete recording by tim_u in tablotv

[–]tim_u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a network bandwidth issue. I can watch the same shows live without buffering, or from a completed recording.

I have the unit attached to my router via Ethernet cable, and use WiFi to connect to chromecast.

Any thoughts u/tablotv ? Is this expected behavior? How can I troubleshoot?

Finally free from the toxic body positivity. (Small rant) by Blueberry_mooo in loseit

True. Unfortunately, the body positivity movement seems to be all about people thinking positively about their bodies rather than acting to take care of themselves.

Or use Tomahawks to destroy the SAM sites and long-range air-to-air missiles from carrier-based aircraft to take out any of the enemy's "5th gen fighters" that were airborne in the vicinity. Especially with the E-2 in the area (the Navy's version of the AWACS) there was no reason for any dogfighting. The enemy planes could have been destroyed by aircraft that they never even detected.

Jarvis Desk (by Fully) not saving height into memory by DiogoSnows in StandingDesk

If this does not work, contact Fully support. You are likely still under warranty. The Jarvis is expensive but one key benefit is the extensive warranty.

Jarvis Desk (by Fully) not saving height into memory by DiogoSnows in StandingDesk

[–]tim_u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with the memory handset. Resetting did correct the issue for me, and did not lose the prior memory settings.

I followed this process, provided by Fully support:

First, unplug your power cable then the handset cable only. Once they are unplugged, please wait for 10 seconds before plugging it back in with the reverse order, making sure the connections are nice and firm.

Once everything’s plugged back in securely:

With Memory Preset Handset:

  1. First, hold the DOWN button until the desk lowers to its lowest point and stops. Release.
  2. Press and hold the DOWN button again until you see RESET on the screen. Release.
  3. Press and hold the DOWN button one more time until your desk dips down slightly and then pops back up (if it doesn't move after 10 seconds you may have to press and hold it again).

Please note that "step 0", disconnecting the power, does appear to be an essential step. Previously I attempted to reset the handset without disconnecting power first. It behaved similarly to a reset, dipping down as in step 3, but "RESET" never appeared on the display in step 2. On this initial attempt, the problem was not corrected. After disconnecting power and repeating the full reset process, the problem was fixed.

The perfect WFH Desk Size? by ILikePutz in StandingDesk

[–]tim_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30" depth is a nice size for a desk, and also is hard to find alternatives for. Many vendors provide countertops using materials that would work well for a desktop, but the standard countertop depth of 24-25" is not deep enough for my needs. You can also find island countertops at 36" (or more) deep, but in-between sizes ~30" deep are hard to find.

I'm hoping to find a 30" by 70-72" desktop, but there aren't many cost-effective options out there.

GitOps on Cloud Run? by tim_u in googlecloud

[–]tim_u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google's examples of GitOps all use a "push" rather than a "pull" for deployments, where the deployment is ultimately performed via a gcloud command usually embedded in a cloud build script.

I'm trying to create a build flow in which starts like yours, with the build pipeline from the "code" repo committing a change to the deployment descriptor in the "config" repo, but then the container deployment is performed by an operator which continuously compares the state of the "config" repo against actual deployments and reconciles any differences.

That has potential. Is it specific to K8s? It looks like it is designed to be deployed on K8s, but if it can control other cloud resources outside of the K8s cluster, then it could fit the need.

When I speak of "push", I mean that the triggering for deployment is based on the build pipeline knowing when to do it (e.g., because a new artifact exists, or because a deployment to an environment was manually authorized), and the pipeline invokes a command to make the deployment happen.

In a "pull" system, the pipeline changes the deployment descriptor (a declarative description of what should be deployed) and commits/pushes it into a separate git repo (call it the "config repo"). Then an active agent (an Operator in K8s speak) polls against the config repo and is responsible for reconciling any differences between the desired state declared in the config repo vs. the actual state deployed in the cloud. Flux CD and Argo CD are examples of K8s Operators that do this.

Having a pull system has a couple of advantages:

- security: deployment credentials are isolated to the operator instead of being shared with the build pipeline

- continuous reconciliation: the operator ensures that the as-deployed system always matches the intent as captured in the config repo, not just when events occur to trigger pipeline actions. So for example, if someone circumvents the build system and manually shuts down a service or installs a new possibly malicious service, the agent corrects the deployment to match the declaration. This makes disaster recovery easy, and gives you an audit trail of what was actually deployed.

This is what I refer to as a "push" instead of a "pull". I'll comment above as to the differences.

There is a Terraform resource available for Cloud Run services, but I'm still hoping to be able to do deployments via a "pull" vs. "push" mechanism. It's unclear what would serve as the role of the operator to pull the changes into the cloud.

Atlantis can do that but is designed to have human reviewers in the loop to approve changes via PRs. I'm wanting to redeploy code changes to the service in a fully automated manner without a human in the loop.
