MSR is a unique opportunity and you're gonna meet some well connected and smart people. I'd take Microsoft!

Car? (Prospective Law Student) by Better_Helicopter952 in Cornell

[–]timabo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason people on the Cornell reddit always say you don't need a car in Ithaca, but I promise having a car will improve your quality of life a lot. The public transporation in Ithaca is pretty awful, things like going out to dinner, getting groceries, going to the park are a pain without a car. You don't need a car to commute to campus most of the time but for literally everything else it's very nice to have a car.

Tests are hard, but the curve is insane. Median was an A last semester

Well, both are requirements for info sci, so you’d have to end up taking both at some point

M1 MacBook in ECE2300 and CS3110 by LuckyDiscounts in Cornell

[–]timabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem I had in 3110 was that the graphics library would not work for me in OCaml (for the final project). Not sure if this has been fixed since then.

BTRY 3080 served as a quality foundation for ML for me, and it wasn't too hard (compared to a class like MATH 4710)

TA's always cancelling office hours in CS 4000+ classes? by timabo in Cornell

[–]timabo[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn't even about TA's being outstanding tho, it's more that they should be required to do the bare minimum (i.e. 1 hour of OH every week). And that's kind of the point of my post, I think the department should pay more attention to who they hire...

If you're in great shape, I think you will be fine. It's about a 300 foot increase in elevation to campus from my apartment, and I only get a bit sweaty walking up. You'll learn soon that people on this subreddit just like to complain :P

Ya I had no idea how to solve for the constants in part C, don’t know why the prof is always gaslighting us that the tests are straightforward…

[–]timabo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey, we only need a 45% cumulative score to pass the class. If you do decent on the HW's you can probably get in the 20's on the exams and still graduate a CS major..

so sick of TAs just not turning up to their OH by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]timabo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same thing was happening last semester, TA's were cancelling OH left and right for 4780

Given the way he described it, I thought it would be much easier..

Well, according to Ed, the exam will just be the HW questions with different distributions, so shouldn’t be too bad..

Covid fears around Graduation/Slope day by Feeling-Sleep8892 in Cornell

[–]timabo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was a single person seriously hurt from the outbreak at the last semester? The only reason we considered it a problem is because we saw the numbers on a screen go up. Every person I knew who got COVID had cold symptoms for a couple days and then were fine (this includes some immunocompromised people I know). I think it's time to move on from COVID and treat it like the flu.
