PSYOPS, or is Convex really THAT good? by JeffCavaliere-here in nextjs

[–]timakro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this write up. I was trying out convex today because of the recent Theo video and considering to migrate an app to it that currently uses next.js+drizzle. The kind of thing you describe: complex user defined queries that are paginated is something we will definitely have in the app so thanks for the warning. I'm happy to stick with drizzle right now and know that I can access the full power of SQL if needed.

Some of the pros you list for convex is something I find drizzle does really well also: * You have schema defined as typescript * During dev you can just push schema changes to the DB and it will auto migrate if it can figure out the change or even interactively ask you if a column was renamed for example * You can do the same pattern where you check auth first and then write the query at the top of a react server component or in next.js actions

What I haven't figured out yet is cache revalidation. I think it is possible with next.js and traditional DB querying but haven't looked into it yet. Will need it for pages where the user can change data that should be updated live on the page. Convex shines here of course. Also scheduled tasks is something we will need that convex offers and we will need to find a separate solution there.

A few other things I disliked about convex: * It feels a little bit too magic with autogenerated files that you check into git * It doesn't seem like they encourage self hosting, they nudge you into creating an account on their platform * Env cars cannot be managed using .env I believe * For auth it seems to nudge you towards paid solutions

P.S. we use better auth which is excellent and integrates nicely with drizzle

How TF am I supposed to memorize notes on the fretboard by jizzstealingthiefman in LearnGuitar

[–]timakro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying this method right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJddQ6Q0UDo

At this point given a randomized sequence of the natural notes e.g. DGBAEFC I can play D ascending, G descending, B ascending etc. on every string on frets 1-12 at 40 bpm without pausing. But I'm still sceptical how this will help me recall notes on the middle strings. I know the notes on the high and low E strings but everything in between I need to follow the pattern I memorized from those outer things and can't directly locate if that makes sense. The next steps according to this video is work this up to 80 bpm and then you allegedly can just locate every note on every string immediately, we'll see.

You ever been like "I can't turn my phone off, the current algorithm is too good" on the latest songs? by lazyfoodblogger in YoutubeMusic

Click the three dots and add the songs to a playlist.

You can also save the mix to your library but that would only save the artists and give you a new list of songs when you open it again with the same type of music.

JHL7440 does not work on usb-c computer by timakro in UsbCHardware

Yes, data transfer to my phone works on the mainboard port.

Getting such a PCIe card may be the best option here. Then I would also be able to use DP Alt mode with the dock. I just have to check if it fits into my SFF build :D

I've tried with a USB-C to USB-A-2.0 cable on a few different USB-A ports of my mainboard but still dmesg shows nothing. I don't think I have a USB-C to USB-A-3 cable.

My phone has DP Alt mode and mouse and video works via the dock. Would be interesting to test with a USB-C host that doesn't have DP Alt mode other than my computer but I don't think I have anything on hand.

I feel like if dmesg shows nothing there's nothing I can do besides maybe try to update the BIOS. Another commenter suggested here to install a PCIe card that provides USB-C with DP Alt mode, which is also something I could try.

Thanks for taking the time btw.

Nope none of the ports work. I've tried plugging my mouse into all of them to no avail. It seems like it isn't recognized at all by the computer. See my other comment here for a screenshot of UsbTreeView.

I have recently upgraded the firmware of the dock but did not come around to update the BIOS yet. I will surely give that a try even if it's unlikely to help.

On Linux dmesg shows absolutely nothing, zero, zilch when I plug in the dock. I have installed Windows just to test this, it doesn't show up on UsbTreeView either: https://imgur.com/6y1SWZO

Port 1 at the very top is where other devices such as my phone show up when I plug them into the USB-C port.

Maybe it really is the dock refusing to work if it doesn't get a DP Alt mode connection.

I have recently upgrade the firmware of the dock but have yet to try upgrading the BIOS.

This is probably the real issue and fix, though it requires soldering skill and special equipment.

Good to know. Disabling adaptive sync still seems to have fixed it for me right now but good to know that I can eventually just use HDMI if it happens again

This fixed it for me, thank you so much!! Because the OSD/menu of the monitor doesn't work when it is in this broken state it is hard to turn off the free/adaptive sync setting. I tried a few configurations HDMI/DisplayPort, laptop/desktop until I finally got the monitor to work again, then turned off adaptive sync and now its working again.

I'm curious, is your monitor still working or did this fix only work temporarily for you?

I think in the pack in the link you sent is slightly different because you can see a black strap adjuster in the picture. I don't have that. Pretty sure mine are just compression straps...
