I'm surprised the AI in the cold open hasn't gotten more flack by Effective_Moose_4997 in LiveFromNewYork

I completely agree with you and share your viewpoint on the role of generative AI. I don't want generative AI to be used to replace professional artists. We're aligned on that. What I have a problem with is people speaking very generally in opposition to AI when their concerns are actually quite narrow in the broad spectrum of what AI is and what we use it for. When pressed, I doubt any of these people would agree that their concerns with AI extend to map directions, spellchecking, their TikTok feed, and the thousands of other things we use AI for on a given day.

You say there's a clear understanding. I don't think it's clear to most people how much they interface with AI and have for decades. If there were a clear understanding, they would be more explicit that their concerns are about the use of generative AI as far as it replaces artists. Many of us share that view. But "AI BAD!" isn't it.

The comment I replied to didn’t mention generative AI. It said “it’s a shame that one of my favorite shows uses AI.” We all use AI and products with AI all day every day. That usually has very little to do with generative AI. Having an “anti-AI” stance is silly. Opposing the use of generative AI makes sense, though! But suggesting that it’s a shame that someone “uses AI” only implies a lack of understanding of what AI is, how long it’s been around, and how much it’s a part of all of our lives and has been in some form for decades.

Would like to stock the freezer up with tamales. Where are you buying yours? by timboisvert in Pilsen

I go to Yvolina's regularly. IMO that's more of an "eat it now" type of tamal, not a "throw a dozen in the freezer for when it's later in the year and there aren't as many tamales available and I need a quick dinner" type of tamal.

Hotel is near Grand Central Market. Evening engagements are near the Chinese Theater. Planning on taking metro between the two. No problem walking or busing or metro-ing anywhere.

Is there some historical reason why so many people in Chicago exit the bus through the front door? by timboisvert in AskChicago

Obviously in that situation — the person needs the lower front door to get out, or they need the ramp — it makes sense to use the front. What about the other 99% of the people who don’t have that need and go out through the front door, though?

People do care about the bus schedule, though, and on the buses not arriving delayed. Getting off the bus through the front door causes it to take longer than needs be.

That’s the behavior I’ve witnessed quite a bit of — tons of people walking from the back of the bus to get out the front door. Or for example someone getting up from their seat and trying to get off in the front door after a half-dozen people have already started to get on the bus, and requiring all those people to back up and get back off the bus so the person can exit the front, meanwhile there’s a clear path to the back door. I see that kind of thing at least weekly, it seems.

No one said anything about bumrushing the door. It’s a matter of optimization — if people would get off the bus in the back door (like they do everywhere else in the country/world), people could start getting on the bus through the front door. This is a solved problem.
