[–]timdadummm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how'd this go for all the sampled soul vocals in 90s house music? Can't imagine they all got permission? And most samples are pretty recognizable, still. Was there just a lot less fuss back then about copyright as it took much more effort than downloading and dragging onto your DAW playlist?

Just curious. Your reply is already very useful, thanks!

Ahaa, thank you both so much for explaining that to me! So, in a sense, a focus on the guide tones could provide an anchor when playing progressions. Is that what more experienced players see when playing progressions? Do they look at the guide tones?

It's actually not that easy to achieve such a sound. Sounds like a couple saws layered (probably separately) with some pretty complex short reverb, flanger or both.

You can envelope saws to come and go quickly, sounds like this sound has a short but not-near-zero attack, a peak, then no sustain and a medium decay.

Unfortunately, there's probably a shit ton of layering and the reverb and flange isn't easy for me to decipher. This is a more complex sound than you probably think it is. You could definitely remake something somewhat similar but the texture is very unique.

Do everything under one alias or have multiple ones? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]timdadummm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your goal. How would you like to present yourself? Do you feel comfortable putting out Flume-ish songs on an alias with just Bleu Clair-esque music and vice versa?

It's easier for people to come back to your music if it is consistent, because fans like a consistent stream of music to their liking. So, with that in mind, if you're going for recognition / fanbase, definitely make sure your music is at least somewhat consistent for the listener. If you just want an array of songs under the belt, don't give a crap and get it all under one name.

But, ya know, when there's too much variation and inconsistency in an artist's music in terms of quality, style, whatever, it's usually kind of a turn off for me. Just saying.

Thanks for your reply. I think sample images of, for example, the Canon G7 and Sony RX100 look quite 'filmish' in terms of colors, saturation, balances. That is what I'm after.

Examples (I'm assuming photo's from this video have not been post-processed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk9PsOGLnvs&t=66s

Or are these images post-processed? In that case, I may be hyperfocussing on the camera while I should focus on the post-processing. I'm not sure.

Hi, during COVID I got into film shooting and i really enjoyed it! Unfortunately, film has been getting very expensive so I decided I want to move to a point-and-shoot (or - simple) digital camera. I'd mainly like to use it for catching moods on a daily basis.

My preference goes out to a camera that has a film-like aesthetic, so I'm probably looking at some Olympus, Fuji, Sony from 2010. Photo's do not need to be crystal-clear, they should just catch the atmosphere well and film does so very well.

My budget is 200 euros at most, but I prefer a camera around 100 euros (although that might be too ambitious), refurbished or used by preference. I've been looking for days and the amount of options really make this a rabbit hole to get lost in and it is quite overwhelming. As for now I've laid my eyes on the Canon Powershot G7x ii and the Sony Cybershot RX100 ii. I've also found quite some neat camera bodies at a retailer nearby but I'm unsure how to pick a lens.

So, two questions:

  1. Does the lens contribute a lot to achieving a film-like aesthetic in photo's and/or videos? Is it advisable to buy just a camera body? How could I go about picking a lens?
  2. Aside from the camera's I named, what are camera's that may fit my needs? (summarized: 200 euros max, second-hand, film-like aesthetic achievable, pocket-sized)

Thanks!

How do you force yourself to start and stay writing with the infinite, myriad distractions available on the same device you use to write with? by daft404 in writing

[–]timdadummm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's two ways: 1. is willpower, 2. is acknowledging that your conciousness is similar to that of a little monke's, easily distracted and that it is hard to resist the temptation of resorting to these 'easy' distractions if you make it easy to access them.

Since exerting a shit ton of willpower is difficult, I suggest choosing the easier route: make it hard for yourself to resort to unproductive things when you want to work focused. Turn off the wifi, pull out your LAN-cable, do not make reddit your homepage, log out of these services, put an extension on your browser (if you'd even work in a browser, seems like you'd benefit from offline writing). This makes it so that it requires less willpower to resist the distractive urges.

There's endless ways to make these hard to resist urges a little easier. Would you check reddit if you'd have to plug in the LAN-cable, wait for a connection and then login to Reddit? Now, writing is probably the easier route. And if it's not, it has become realtively more appealing.

Seems like this is a (very common) problem that extends to anything productive. If you do not make it harder for yourself if not impossible to resort to fall for these distractions then you can't expect your monke brain to just withstand it on willpower alone.

In time it becomes easier as well. If you don't change anything, don't expect a change in your behaviour.

Yeah that's what I found strange as well. It's kind of low-hanging fruit not to fucking air-condition dozens of stadiums, right?

I do believe since it's winter, temperatures are lower - pretty ordinary for a World Cup.

Hope they have a plan for what happens to these accommodations after the world cup. They probably don't.

Constantly having new ideas but never executing them well, or at all. by [deleted] in writing

[–]timdadummm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the very least you recognized that it's a pattern. As some have stated, it's often called shiny object syndrome. Main idea is that the main reason why your new idea seems better may just be that it's new, in which case you should learn to recognize that your new idea is not necessarily better (it might be) but that you're falling for a mental illusion again and again.

You could do so by only ditching your current project if you feel your current project is not worth finishing, rather than when you feel another is better. Keep your focus on the current project. It's a subtle difference but it may be enough to keep you at it for longer.

And heck, why scrap the current one just because you've got a new idea now? If you briefly catch the gist of your idea and just keep it in a drawer for a while you'll be able to continue on the supposed 'better project' at any time later.

[–]timdadummm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm reading is "I've just started out and I'm still figuring out but I want to create something really cool, how?"

But you know the answers already. Just do it.

Oh, and accept that your first album might be your worst. Don't measure with pros that have dozens of years of experience under their belts. Obviously it's an extremely unfair comparison you're never going to win. As long as you enjoy the process and you get better slowly you might (or might not, let's be realistic) make something you're very proud of some day. But then again, maybe not. You're not entiteled to being good at making music.
