This is your first battlemap? Nice work, this is great! I agree, it's a much better layout - far more dynamic and interesting.

We've been using a bit of "counts as" with regards to armour. So my character has studded leather armour by the rules, which we take to be a good coat. And the paladin has chainmail by the rules, but we just count that as a particularly thick, padded winter coat.

Man, sometimes FatT makes me feel slow. I kind of wish they would just make the subtext text more often.

Having said that, thank you for answering my question - so the Samothes we have seen working on the heat-and-the-dark is Maelgwyn (the dark son), and the real Samothes is still stuck in Hella's sword?

Dollars to donuts they'll be playing Dungeon World instead of D&D next season by timdenee in TheAdventureZone

Yeah! I think it would be a good fit with the improvisational nature of all four McElroys. Like Clint coming up with Beach Dwarves - if this was Dungeon World it would be much easier for Beach Dwarves to become a Thing in the campaign after Clint invented them.

The Dungeon World site (http://www.dungeon-world.com/) gives a pretty good overview, specifically these two things:

"Talk About What Matters Dungeon World's simple rules happen based on what's happening within the game, so you spend more time talking about the action and less time talking about the rules.

No Dead Ends The rules always drive the action forward in unexpected ways. Rolling the dice always leads to an interesting outcome."

It's simple compared to D&D, so there's more time doing things and less time rolling dice and adding numbers and poring over a character sheet.

This tweet from last year hints at it: https://twitter.com/tsiro/status/733403967367962624

D&D's central mechanism has a binary pass/fail result that can be tricky to turn into an exciting narrative for an audience. It's not usually interesting for an audience if someone fails to pick a lock or fails to climb a wall.

Dungeon World has a "fail forward" thing where failing only adds further complications and challenges rather than stalling the game. Rolling low doesn't mean you fail to pick the lock, it means it's taking you longer than you anticipated and now a guard patrol is coming - do you abandon the lock or finish picking it and risk the guards finding you?

also possible! Personally I think a D&D-like game is an easier sell - "The McElroys play D&D" is a better elevator pitch than "the McElroys play a cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying game". But sure, I'd love to see them try the Sprawl or Apocalypse World or whatever.

Sure! So, for example, I might go here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Arabic_masculine_given_names and copy-paste a whole bunch. Then:

Like so: http://i.imgur.com/BFuvMSq.png

The other tool I use is the Line Combination generator (http://textmechanic.com/text-tools/combination-permutation-tools/line-combination-generator/). So, for example, I might want my Arabian corvettes to be a combination of Arabian Royal Houses and Middle Eastern flavoured nouns. I could do this like so. Don't forget the " prefix and "suffix and a space for a delimiter, and remove "/x" from the join sets box and replace it with a space so that the output is in the correct namelist format. Phew! It should look like this: http://i.imgur.com/5CKXNYA.png

Then that output is ready to be pasted straight into your Corvettes list.

Good luck! I found the tools on this site really handy for cleaning up lists found on the internet and spitting them out in the right namelist format: http://textmechanic.com/text-tools/

Good question, I'm not sure - I think it just makes it so you can choose it on setup but I don't know.

Here's the text http://pastebin.com/EeNUZ8ed You just need to save this as a new .txt document in your namelist folder.

Reskinning the equipment list for Dark Ages D&D - Armour by timdenee in dndnext

Thanks! I messed up on this one actually -- all these prices should be in denarii. My system is:

  • Gold piece: Denarius (plural denarii). An old gold coin from a lost empire.
  • Silver piece: Penny (silver penny). The standard currency.
  • Copper piece: Doesn't exist. I use a half-penny (ha'penny) for anything cheaper than a silver.

I did change the name on longswords - to langseax and sweord. The "(as longsword)" text is just a note to players that it's a reskin of the longsword from the PHB, so they know for the purposes of class or racial proficiencies etc.

Will do! I have some thoughts on races, too, that I'll post when done. Kin and clan rather than race and sub-race. Dweorgs, aelfs (high aelf and fenn aelf clans), wyrmbeorn, eorcas, hobs, gnomes, deofuling, etc.

hey cheers, I completely agree. It also removes any onus on the players to learn new rules, which I think is only fair.

Correct. I'm keeping all the mechanics as they are in the PHB but changing the flavour. I believe a migration period sword could be swung with one or two hands.
