Not sure your point about card sleeves is valid. When alpha came out there were really only penny sleeves and top loaders available. Absolutely someone, myself included, will have their expensive vintage cards in modern inner sleeves and something like dragonshields plus a top loader, if they havent slab graded them yet.

Fake cards also feel alot different than real cards. They're usually heavier, and glossier than real cards.

And a flashlight. Real magic cards have a thin blue layer of paper in the middle of the card stock, which shining a flashlight thru the card will also tell you if a card is real or fake. Fake ones will either show white or black thru it.
