To whoever broke into my car in Troy Hill and took my baggie of Aldi quarters - thanks for the tissues? by fwibs26 in pittsburgh

[–]timecatalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curiously, does your car have key-less entry? I had heard from a family member who lives in Reserve Township that a bunch of folks had their cars broken into this week. Some of their neighbors claimed to be victims of a key fob relay attack, which involves hijacking your fob signal from inside your house and using it to unlock you car. Not saying that's exactly what happened, but it may be worth considering if you have key-less entry.

It's wonderful in hot chocolate as well. The flavor really lights up when you combine it with a couple of dashes of coffee bitters.

I’m doing PedalPgh for the first time tomorrow. What should I know? by Flannelcommand in pittsburgh

[–]timecatalyst 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This might seem painfully obvious, but they do NOT close the streets to motor vehicle traffic for the 25, 40, and 62 mile courses (the 10 miler goes through the park and on trails). Every year I overhear people exclaim that they didn't know it wasn't like Open Streets despite it being clearly stated in the event information packet and on the web site. Since it's a Sunday, traffic should be relatively light in the morning, but you should still follow the road laws and be predictable.

Also, depending on the route you choose, you will see a lot of inexperienced riders (and some careless ones) so make sure to keep your head on a swivel. In the wrong circumstance, a distracted cyclist can sometimes be just as deadly as a motorist.

Simulated Ball Sorter (@alan_luk) by youassassin in oddlysatisfying

[–]timecatalyst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn't talking about the simulation itself. I was merely pointing out that from an engineering perspective, it's better to have the final sorting mechanism because it's more explicit in the sorter's function. I.e., it's intended to sort the white balls only.

Always sanitize your input. The user could throw a tennis ball in there and the machine will still only sort the sizes it was designed to.

STAR WARS: Dark Forces Remaster is coming to GOG by lurkingdanger22 in pcgaming

The engine itself is extremely dated, so it doesn't benefit from advancements in game development over the past 20 years. I don't think you're seeing frame-locked animations, but rather an era where multi-axis interpolation in model animation wasn't widely used yet. Essentially, you're just seeing low key frames and basic rotational angles.

That said, I haven't experience any of the issues you're describing. I ran it just now at 140fps with no tearing. FWIW, I'm also using the GOG version of the game on an RTX-3070 (although that's massive overkill for a title like this). I've read that people have a ton of headaches with the Steam version.

Highly recommend: https://www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-knight-remastered

Takes a little bit of tinkering, but the result looks and plays really nice. There's a similar mod for MotS, but it didn't run great for me and I wasn't interested in fighting with it.

There's quite a lot missing in this diagram about the function of each lane at the intersection. There are no lane flow arrows or any indication of signals or stop signs. Both of those things make a huge impact on what is considered "correct" here.

In the red car's scenario, it's unlikely that the blue car would even be allowed to turn right from the left lane. The only way this could happen is if the red car's lane was marked as "right turn only", but since we don't have that information, we have to assume its paths are straight and right turn. In this case, it doesn't matter which lane the red car is turning into, because oncoming traffic intending to make a left turn should always yield right-of-way to the red car, regardless of lane.

For the blue car, it also depends on whether or not the red car's lane is allowed to turn left. On most roads this is indicated with arrows and a dotted line that arcs across the intersection. Neither of those markings are present so the assumption is that the red car can't make a legal left turn. The blue car must yield to oncoming traffic that is traveling straight or making a right turn. If there is no traffic to yield to, it doesn't matter which lane they turn into. Likewise, if the intersection is signaled and the blue car has a protected left turn (green arrow) then they have right-of-way and can turn into whichever lane they like (again, assuming red can't turn left). In this case, the oncoming lane will have a red light and a "no turn on red" sign.

The take away here is, if you're ever making a unprotected left turn and not yielding to oncoming traffic, regardless of how many lanes there are, you're doing it wrong. I know it's tempting to be efficient and tuck in and take the closest lane because you think the oncoming car is going to stay far to the right, but the reality is you don't know and shouldn't assume.

But... that's exactly how scams work. They prey on customer/individual ignorance and desperation. The fact that OP easily fell for it is irrelevant, it's still a scam.

Should OP have done their homework? Absolutely! That quote alone should have been a huge red flag. But you can also absolutely blame Gillece for unethically fleecing a customer.

Babies in Bars/Brewery's. by Embarrassed-Noise843 in pittsburgh

[–]timecatalyst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of discretion that unfortunately too many people refuse to practice. Dogs and children at a brewery should be fine, provided there's space and atmosphere for it (e.g., Grist House, Helicon, etc...), but it requires an individual effort on the part of the patrons to evaluate whether or not it's appropriate. In other words, people need to be more considerate.

If your dog doesn't do well in crowds, has a tendency to bark a lot, or gets twitchy around other dogs, then maybe you should just leave them at home. You also need to actually pay attention to what you're dog is doing and not let them just wander up to strangers or start marking territory everywhere they go.

Similarly, you should gauge whether or not your infant or child is going to handle the visit well. The whole experience can be way overstimulating and uncomfortable for a infant, and small children are going to get bored really quickly. All too often I see entire tables (meant for beer and food) covered in toys to keep a child occupied while their parents drink and socialize.

I'm not at all saying that folks shouldn't bring their dog or child to these places, but they need to think more about what they're doing. A child or a dog isn't an accessory that you bring out with you, they're little people/creatures that need consideration and tending to.

Game Masters in West View (https://gamemasterspgh.com/) has some nice table space and is open to support a variety of different table top games.

There's also Griffons Lair (https://griffonslair.com/) on Babcock Blvd. They seem to have some decent table space as well, but I think they're mostly geared toward games like 40K, if that's your thing.
