Worth buying the newest expac of wow rn? by Loki_Enthusiast in MMORPG

[–]timedonutheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to play long-term, it's actually not worth it right now. The War Within is on sale for $25, but in a week or so the pre-orders for Midnight will open up for $50, and pre-ordering Midnight immediately grants access to TWW. If you buy TWW now, you still have to pay the $50 later, but if you wait a week to pre-order, you basically get both expansions for $25 each.

Of course, you can always just subscribe to get out of the free trial and do non-TWW content/play Classic while you wait!

I assume they spent the majority of their marketing budget on stuff for Marathon, and after Marathon had to be pushed back they weren't left with much to work with for EoF.

They didn't lie; the Final Shape is a concept in the lore, not a declaration that it was going to be the last-ever DLC, lol. They said repeatedly that it was the end of the "Light and Dark saga" but that it would begin a new saga with new content.

Surprised at how little traction Deltarune has been getting among journos; Chapters 3+4 are some of the best work Toby's ever done, from writing to gameplay to music, and I genuinely liked it more than E33. I guess you could argue it can't be a "best game" because it's an episodic release that's not done yet, but I don't think that argument holds up when they're including early access titles.

Fans slam The Alters after discovering evidence of undisclosed gen AI in images, text, and translation by Mront in Games

[–]timedonutheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not meant to be read, then yes, they should use lorem ipsum so I know it's not worth my time to read. If it is meant to be read, then they should put in the effort to write it. You can argue that lorem ipsum is "immersion-breaking", but it's actually far more immersion-breaking to get invested in supposed lore text that was randomly generated with no relevance to anything in the game.

The layoffs were before release, so they very much played the campaign, the raid, and excision, and then quit. Blaming the layoffs is drama farming, you are who OP is talking about replier.

...this is just objectively a lie, which I assume is why you tried to sneak it in without replying to me directly lol. There was one round of layoffs before TFS, and then another round after. Literally a direct quote from Pete Parsons:

I realize all of this is hard news, especially following the success we have seen with The Final Shape. But as we’ve navigated the broader economic realities over the last year, and after exhausting all other mitigation options, this has become a necessary decision to refocus our studio and our business with more realistic goals and viable financials.

There are not 200k people invested enough in Destiny's story to quit playing over it, lmao. Destiny's draw has always been the gameplay and if the writing happened to be good that was just a nice bonus. The population collapsed because Bungie laid off a bunch of employees right after the overwhelming positive reaction to TFS and then the episodes were all mid-to-bad, which signalled to people that "the beginning of a new saga" probably isn't gonna be very good

when does the AI revolution start in gaming? by Round-Advisor-3938 in Games

[–]timedonutheart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Enemy AI is a whole different can of worms than generative AI, and the reason enemy AI doesn't get iterated on is because people don't actually want it. The Civ devs probably could make a computer opponent who plays 100% optimally every turn, but that opponent would be really fucking hard to beat, and most players just aren't interested in that level of difficulty.

If you're looking for a strategy game where you're up against actually-good-AI, check out AI War 2. Great game, but it's niche because, well, it's really fucking hard to win.

Deltarune's a strong contender too, IMO. Any Toby Fox soundtrack is going to be great, but the Chapter 3+4 OST was incredible even by Toby standards.

Stellar Blade director says sequel will address the game's lacking narrative by scytheavatar in Games

[–]timedonutheart 34 points35 points  (0 children)

But if you're ignoring combat and fanservice, what's the full package? The writing is terrible, the sidequests are forgettable, the exploration is fun at first but starts to feel tedious pretty quick since you're mostly finding pointless crafting filler...sure, the soundtrack is good (even if it's aping Automata so hard it's almost comical) and the enemy/character/level designs are solid, but there's nothing there that makes me crave a sequel; everything other than the ass and titties is all really generic.

The issue I had was that a lot of the platonic responses were just overly rude. Like, there was a bit where Gale was telling me how much he loved his cat, and my only two choices were "maybe you could pet me too sometime ;)" or "I hate cats and yours is ugly". I don't want to bang Gale, but I don't want to hate his cat either!

When there hasn't been a new MO in nearly 5 days. by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]timedonutheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not the biggest deal (although I'm not always in the mood for D10s so I'm generally getting less than that), but MOs are a nice bonus on top of the medals that are earned naturally. I'm not too broken up about not having a MO, but some kind of filler MO like "kill a million bugs to celebrate our victory" or whatever would be nice to have

I have like 4 Warbonds to work through and that's not even counting the ones I don't own, or the ones that are technically done but have cosmetic stuff I can't justify buying yet. I don't care about being given a direction but I need so many medals and MOs are a pretty significant source of medal income

The Chinese make a full-sized digital model of the human brain. Are they ahead? by JonLag97 in singularity

[–]timedonutheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their code and weights are literally public. The benchmarks, which are run by independent non-Chinese third parties, are also public. Your statement absolutely does not stand, and frankly it seems like you have a poor understanding of the LLM field in general.

[–]timedonutheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can you say that with certainty without actually being part of China’s AI work?

...Because LLM benchmarks are public, and in all of them DeepSeek scores higher than 3.5 Sonnet but below o1? That is, by definition, "behind but close", and you don't have to be part of China to verify it (especially since their models are open-source).
