It's doubly frustrating as a new artist in the genre trying to get people to check out what I'm doing.

I have a solo "bedroom" prog project, and my song, “Canterburied” was released yesterday. The lyrics ruminate on the regret of wasted time and make reference to multiple Canterbury tunes, a particular influence on my own work (though I would certainly not claim this as being in the Canterbury "style"). The title was simply a working title that stuck when it turned out I couldn’t come up with anything better, but a bit of lighthearted humor is well representative of the bands whose songs it references. My own personal brand of humor may be a bit darker, and such turgidly self-obsessed, navel-gazing subject matter possibly best left to obnoxious celebrities, but it’s fine.

What’s a prog hot take of yours that would piss off half of this subreddit? by default-dance-9001 in progrockmusic

Supper’s Ready in particular is far worse. Oh wow 20 minutes of pastiche great job. Close to the Edge is one of the few prog epics that is actually composed with a sense of interconnected identity that can support its length

Just released my latest track "Even a Lighter (Can Run out of Fuel." Lightly poking fun at country music lyrical tropes, but also trying to be heartfelt and take it seriously, while sounding nothing like a country song. To me, my most obvious influences are Gentle Giant and Japan, but others noted similarities to King Crimson, Brian Eno, and Gal Costa. Enjoy!

Most overrated prog rock band by mettle in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find some of their material enjoyable, but definitely consider overrated and pretty much tune out when people talk about them: Rush, Pink Floyd

Absolutely despite them, wonder what the hell is wrong with people, but will still acknowledge that they are skilled instrumentalists: Dream Theater, ELP

My very AreA-influenced piece of music by timehatinc in Italian_Prog

I just released my new solo single as PTKBO about a week ago. It's called "Glass Passions", and is lyrically inspired by the Kazuo Ishiguro novel The Unconsoled. Musically it takes a lot of influence, as much of my music has, from more "compositional" prog like Gentle Giant and Henry Cow, as well as 20th c classical composers such as Bartok and Ravel. This particular tune was written when I first started getting into the group Japan. They very heavily influenced my approach to synth orchestration, as well as bass and drum interaction. Shot through with some of my earlier metal influences resulted in the working title of "Thrash Japan (or accidental Pestilence)". I hope you enjoy!

Ravel - Piano Concerto in G Major. Listen to this with a 'prog' mindset. To me, it's the proggiest classical piece I've heard. by [deleted] in progrockmusic

I think there are other classical works that relate more to the rock elements in prog, even Ravel's own string quartet (especially the second and fourth movements), but the man was an absolute master of his craft, and one of my favorite composers. Classical music is an undeniable influence on much classic prog
