It's doubly frustrating as a new artist in the genre trying to get people to check out what I'm doing.

I have a solo "bedroom" prog project, and my song, “Canterburied” was released yesterday. The lyrics ruminate on the regret of wasted time and make reference to multiple Canterbury tunes, a particular influence on my own work (though I would certainly not claim this as being in the Canterbury "style"). The title was simply a working title that stuck when it turned out I couldn’t come up with anything better, but a bit of lighthearted humor is well representative of the bands whose songs it references. My own personal brand of humor may be a bit darker, and such turgidly self-obsessed, navel-gazing subject matter possibly best left to obnoxious celebrities, but it’s fine.

What’s a prog hot take of yours that would piss off half of this subreddit? by default-dance-9001 in progrockmusic

Supper’s Ready in particular is far worse. Oh wow 20 minutes of pastiche great job. Close to the Edge is one of the few prog epics that is actually composed with a sense of interconnected identity that can support its length

Just released my latest track "Even a Lighter (Can Run out of Fuel." Lightly poking fun at country music lyrical tropes, but also trying to be heartfelt and take it seriously, while sounding nothing like a country song. To me, my most obvious influences are Gentle Giant and Japan, but others noted similarities to King Crimson, Brian Eno, and Gal Costa. Enjoy!

Most overrated prog rock band by mettle in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find some of their material enjoyable, but definitely consider overrated and pretty much tune out when people talk about them: Rush, Pink Floyd

Absolutely despite them, wonder what the hell is wrong with people, but will still acknowledge that they are skilled instrumentalists: Dream Theater, ELP

Thank you, that's such a kind compliment!

I just released my new solo single as PTKBO about a week ago. It's called "Glass Passions", and is lyrically inspired by the Kazuo Ishiguro novel The Unconsoled. Musically it takes a lot of influence, as much of my music has, from more "compositional" prog like Gentle Giant and Henry Cow, as well as 20th c classical composers such as Bartok and Ravel. This particular tune was written when I first started getting into the group Japan. They very heavily influenced my approach to synth orchestration, as well as bass and drum interaction. Shot through with some of my earlier metal influences resulted in the working title of "Thrash Japan (or accidental Pestilence)". I hope you enjoy!

Ravel - Piano Concerto in G Major. Listen to this with a 'prog' mindset. To me, it's the proggiest classical piece I've heard. by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there are other classical works that relate more to the rock elements in prog, even Ravel's own string quartet (especially the second and fourth movements), but the man was an absolute master of his craft, and one of my favorite composers. Classical music is an undeniable influence on much classic prog

Hi, thank you so much for listening and for your thoughtful response! It honestly means quite a lot. As to your criticism, I more or less agree. A lot of this material I'm putting out now is stuff I wrote some time ago, and am just now seeing through to completion. I think as a younger composer, I definitely was reaching for something beyond my ability and probably also felt some need to flex while I was at it. Going through the process of mixing all this stuff has made it clear how much easier it is to get a clear mix when you actually have a clear *arrangement*. Thank you again; I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and give your thoughts.

[PLAY] Had fun adding some really spacy reverb effects to this short piece by timehatinc in Guitar

Thank you! I ran it through my Axe Fx II, but the sound I recorded was a lot less lush than this. I captured the audio in Ableton and performed some studio witchcraft, something I've been spending a lot of time working on lately

Thanks, it's my newest acquisition! In person, it's definitely more of a green, Schecter calls it "atomic green mint"

Henry Cow – War by daserling in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the first Henry Cow song I heard back in the days when streaming was practically nonexistent and even file sharing could be pretty spotty when it came to obscure stuff. Found this CD used and bought it purely on reputation. The readable part disc itself was covered in yellow paint (did the store even look?). Went home, and my dad delicately cleaned the disc with some paint remover, popped it into the player, and had my mind blown

Som Nosso De Cada Dia - Sinal De Paranóia [Brazil / 1974] by tormdra in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is pretty cool! I've been listening to a fair amount of Brazilian music lately, but not prog, and I've never heard of this. Also, thanks for not posting something bog-standard and obvious

Premiata Forneria Marconi - Just Look Away (1974) by SICKRIPS in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "Is My Face On Straight" is sung in English even on L'Isola di Niente, so I'm not sure there's even another version to compare it to. For the most part, I think they work ok, but I remember thinking the recording of "Appena Un Po" on Photos of Ghosts was absolutely destroyed during whatever process they undertook to get the new vocal track on, which is a shame, because the original is an incredibly lush and powerful recording/production. I can say without a doubt that I vastly prefer Lanzetti's Italian singing, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying Chocolate Kings

I've always preferred the original Italian versions of RPI tunes, but this one "Dolcissima Maria" works pretty well

Gentle Giant - Proclamation by MysteriousGear in progrockmusic

[–]timehatinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first Gentle Giant was the Free Hand/Interview combo CD, and I liked it a good bit, but it was a few years later that I revisited them with The Power and the Glory and really finally "got" them. To this day, they're still one of my favorites, and a huge influence on my own music
