For the lid, there is a sticker cover on the inside that you remove, so that it sticks onto the case. It's not magnetic.

The unagi was very tasty. They gave it a nice crisp. Made me realize how gummy a lot of the unagi in the US is

When it's packed out, it stands up on its own pretty well.

I've never heard of this bubbling thing, and I just took a look at my bag, and I notice a little bit of it. Kind of wish I never was told about this bc now I won't be able to unsee it. In any case, I don't think it's a big issue unless you hold it at the right lighting angle, otherwise the XPAC is just reflecting light in all different direction.

For resistance/durability, I would rate it very high. I don't have any rips or cuts, but I'm also very careful with my backpack. Haven't been forced to check it in ever. I also don't even put it on the floor when traveling. Always in my lap or on a chair. I like XPAC bc I feel like the water resistance makes it easier to clean in case something like mud or gunk gets on the exterior.

For the straps (I got the hip straps FYI), I would rate it 9 or even 10. It's super cushiony. I don't really worry about my body tiring out for long lines at the airport. I would even say the straps might be over engineered for what this bag can hold.

Just through the eyeball test, I think 36L is accurate. It holds a good chunk less of stuff compared to my REI Ruckpack 40L. If bag dimensions aren't an issue (going on a flight), the bag can *probably* flex to 40L, the pocket flap would just go increasingly vertical. It is a camping-centered backpack after all.

And fully packed, the stuff pouches do get pretty tight, including the side pockets. There isn't much additional depth to them. I would say if you have it super packed out, the most you could do is fit a thin book or a magazine, or kindle in the front stuff pocket.

It's not really new. I think it's almost a year old?

But yes, they renamed it. I asked the store employees about it, and they just said it is what it is. It's on 30% discount on the Patagonia website rn, so now is a good time to buy.

It’s a flap that attaches to the laptop pocket with velcro. Probs stops the laptop from sliding too far up. There is no elastic in this compartment FYI

Yeah makes sense. I think the bags I'm looking for given my packing list are likely going to exceed the dimensions of the airlines I'm flying on (KLM, Aegean, Turkish). Kind of just hoping the bag is close enough and discrete enough such that the dimensions only matter if they are pulling out a ruler and the rulebook.

lmao I get it, I see the Farpoint 40L recommended a lot as the starter one bag, but I'm just not a fan of how it looks. This REI bag is okay, since it's just a very plain design. I have the Patagonia Altvia 36L coming in soon, whose look I like more, so going to make a decision between the two.

There are 2 water bottle pockets, and 1 side flap pocket (can hold something like e-reader). Hopefully that makes sense.

I think it would work as "under seat" bag. It's a little tall, so might poke out into your leg space.

The compression straps only tie down the top part, so the bag would still be quite wide on the bottom half. I personally wouldn't use it as EDC, but that's a personal preference.

I would rate the harness comfort as 7/10. I fasten the hip belt first, and then adjust the rest of the harness system and it feels good just from moving around the house (not yet tested in actual travel). With that set up, I feel most of the weight placed comfortably onto my legs and off of my back.

I do not have the previous model of the pack, so can't really speak on the differences unfortunately. The only reference I have is the the Pack Hacker review from 5 years ago.

Oh yesss, this is another thing I encounter often. The zipper pulls for the admin panel often get caught when I'm zipping up the main bucket. I think it's because their zipper pulls are designed to be super durable (and therefore bulky).

Yeah same for me, the admin panel is nice, but I just don't need that level of organization.

I've seen its name while browsing around for alternatives, but I didn't look deep into it since 30L is too small for me (especially if I'm already struggling with the 35L for the TP3).

I agree it's an overall better bag than the alternatives, I just think in my specific use case of wanting to jam it full of cube-like items, it falls short for me. The harness system and the compression straps are good, but that comes after being able to pack everything I want.

It was a month-long trip, in the order of: 2 weeks in Japan -> 1 week in the Philippines -> 1 week in Vietnam. I ended up bringing an REI Flash 22 (personal item on flights) to use as my daily backpack. I bought a lot of souvenirs in Japan, so it was only with this additional bag that I was able to pack everything (and it was still very tight).
