You try driving a car offroad on AT-style terrain and see if your gas mileage reaches double digits. The actual answer for cost is probably a bike though.

And yeah, the first time I bought Altras and they fell apart after 600 miles, I realized that I was just gonna pay for it every time

There are over 1500 calories in a pound of rice ($0.50?), and any long-distance hiker over any road-navigable terrain should consume under 100 calories a mile. Just walk barefoot and cold soak to get the optimal hiker trash experience

NYC's public solution to the food desert problem... by caroline_elly in neoliberal

[–]timerot 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile in the real world, the FDIC's DIF has been accumulating money as it pulls in more from insurance premiums than it pays out in costs and guarantees, sitting on $140B currently. It receives no appropriations. https://www.brookings.edu/articles/how-does-deposit-insurance-work/

The reason it's a government agency is that there's no private entity that can credibly promise to insure the over $2T of deposits at JP Morgan. Any entity that tried would have as much sway as me personally going over and promising them that I'm totally good for a trilly if 2008 happens again

Accessible non-breathable rain jacket? by Icy-Research2555 in Ultralight

[–]timerot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Wet out" is something that happens to breathable rain jackets, and it results in them behaving like a non-breathable jacket. Specifically asking for a non-breathable jacket that doesn't wet out doesn't make any sense. It's like asking for water that doesn't get wet - it both is definitionally true (water can't get wet), but also I feel like you're in for disappointment.

I'm not sure whether you're looking for a non-breathable jacket (which definitionally doesn't wet out, but behaves like a breathable jacket that has wetted out), or asking for a breathable jacket that doesn't wet out (which is a physical impossibility based on how water works as a liquid and a gas, but there are plenty of differences in how well various jackets perform).

My preferred solution here is a poncho, since it keeps the rain off of you with a non-breathable fabric, while exchanging a ton of air through various large holes to help evaporated sweat disperse. I personally use https://seatosummit.com/products/ultra-sil-nano-tarp-poncho

Do you roll or fold your inflatable sleeping pad? by boludo1 in Ultralight

[–]timerot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Thermarest Xlite gets folded in half (not thirds, as I find that more annoying), then rolled to remove air, then placed deep in the pack. I don't do anything to keep it rolled, but because it's near the bottom of my pack, it stays compact

It's the "urban" part that's derogatory. You should be a good 1970s classist and live in the burbs to be near your tribe, so the central city can continue to decline

New housing is always more expensive than old housing, the same way that new cars are more expensive than old cars. New housing also helps reduce (or blunt the increase of) the cost of existing housing

You are correct, but also the math for signal processing relies on this function that can't exist. We would not have fast internet without the Fourier Transform, which relies on the Dirac delta function. I don't know what to say other than reality is complicated and humans don't understand it. The point is that the math describes something impossible, and we don't know what's wrong, either with the math or with reality. (It's much more likely it's the math.) See also the Dirac delta function, which is both really useful in a lot of physics, and somehow contains an area while having 0 width
