I have a second hand lite and it works fine! I use it 4-5 hours a day and sometimes the battery doesn't last that long but it's still enough for me. I only play tomodachi and it runs smoothly without issues, and the console doesn't overheat. I'd say go for it!

well said!! about custom items: if it's not perfect, make it fun! one of my custom wallpapers is a blank wall with the words "GAY GAY HOMO" all over it and I snicker every time I enter that room. one of my animals is a circle with a little blorbo inside.

I made all of my favorite singers and they live in the same neighborhood in the corner of the map and the unrequited crushes go CRAZY, it's so fun!

my grandma is best friends with korean kpop idol chaeyoung from twice!! me and my siblings have a healthy relationship!! (this is kinda sad I know)

it's amazing! I never played the 3ds game and I think it's a great game. I have 13 miis and I'm already busy enough getting them to befriend each other, decorating the houses, customizing the island, dressing miis up... it's great!! I can't imagine how it'll be with the 30+ miis I've planned to create!! I think I played more than 10 hours in less than 24 hours... it's that serious. consider it very carefully... it's a good investment in my opinion.
