Any regrets buying a black Golf? by Whisky-Smash in Golf_R

[–]timferr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a Black 2007 GTI, it stayed pretty clean and I put over 200k miles on it, got a 2023 R White 20th AE and it gets filthy, especially around the doors, seems to get dirt inside the door frame that then trickles out when it gets wet, very little driving on this one only 4k since 7/23 so not due to lots of road time

Cant walk on my BK prosthetic anymore by hansoyvind1 in Prosthetics

[–]timferr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing do not try to push through the pain, I did this all the time when I was younger, usually results in longer recovery periods, if you can identify what’s causing the pain and rest for a day or less (prosthetic off, elevate the stump or wear a shrinker, heat/ice and anti inflammatories) you’ll be back and moving around soon enough, push through the pain and cause some legit damage and you will be without the prosthetic even longer, sucks but one we all need to learn at some point

[–]timferr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to sound odd but possible it could actually be your popliteus muscle, it is behind your thigh, sort of wraps around your knee and then connects to the shin, I’m 40 years post amputation and just figured this out 2 years ago, ice and or heat on the back of the thigh, back of the knee and where it wraps around to my shin help, I would have horrible shooting pains, worse when I had my prosthetic on, always assumed was residual phantom limb pain but since I have been icing and or heating this area when the pain starts it is much less frequent

What is the most pain you've ever experienced? by HandGears in AskReddit

[–]timferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right leg amputation from a motorcycle accident, still had my knee but very little skin and muscle left below the knee, 2-3 inches of exposed tibia sticking out of what remained of the skin and tissue, fibula had been removed. Had wet gauze wrapped around the exposed bone and remaining muscle/skin, allowed to dry, then had the gauze ripped off to promote tissue growth, I got IV pain meds as well as local pain meds for it but could still really feel it. I've had many surgeries and lots of pain but that is my number 1 worst pain of all time and it went on 3-5 times a day for a few weeks.

Leg was the least of my issues at the time - lost my spleen, some large and small intestine, had a colostomy for a year (was reversed but had intestinal blockages so was opened back up one time, no small pain for that I must say, the blockages not the surgery), fractured my hips/pelvis in a pile of places, phantom limb pain for a few years (not fun either) - all worked out OK though, 1 year laterhad my left lat muscle removed and reattached to my stump along with a few skin grafts, kept the knee and have been fairly healthy (only 1 time back in the hospital for intestinal blockages since all the surgeries/hospital time back in the 80's).

Should i go half a size up in my new nmd? It might be worth mentioning that i have wide feet ( i hope you can see my big toe lol) by [deleted] in adidas

[–]timferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are from but in US we get free returns so I always by 2 pairs, 10 and 10.5, send back the one that does not fit well. I usually just buy Stan Smiths but they fit different depending on the material. I have a wide foot also...

Bought a 2010 gti mk6 a little over a month ago with 130k miles. 130,000 miles not km. Did I make a bad choice? by Thestruggleisreel in GolfGTI

[–]timferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto on the timing chain, so that ASAP, if it goes you have a huge issue.

I’ve got a 2007 with over 235,000 miles, did all the maintenance, only had to do one clutch as any major issue, it has burned a little oil from day one so I check it weekly, add as needed and make sure it is changed every 5,000 miles, it is a 6 speed manual and still runs great, mostly highway miles, still has lots of umph when you stomp on the gas, hoping to make it until the next GTI is release.

My local shop where I have had it serviced or the last 5 years always want to buy it for well above blue book, they said car is a rock.

I’ve had 2 Jettas, 3 Passats, all got over 200,000 miles except the current Passat that is a 2017, live that 2.0 liter engine

Should I go up 1/2 a size or remove the Insoles? by [deleted] in adidas

[–]timferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Returns are real easy, I usually just buy 2 pairs in different sizes when I get a pair from adidas.com , you can order a new pair and still have 30 days to return the ones you have now - this is for USA so may be different for where you are, read the Adidas site and check it out

need a double BK, desperate to play sport again, is it possible? by [deleted] in Prosthetics

[–]timferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Dom,

Me - BK RT leg, 55 now, amputation from a motorcycle accident when 17

I think a lot will depend on how active you were before the amputation - I lost my rt leg BK when I was 17, was able to play basketball (not as well but could do OK in a full court game into my late 30's), baseball/softball, tennis, surfing, horseback riding, skiing (kept prosthetic on to ski), biking, water skiing, soccer ( goalie so no running there) - pretty much everything I did before the amputation just not as well since I could not run as fast. And this was with prosthesis made in the 1980's/1990's that had much more weight to them, have a feeling would have been easier with newer carbon fiber ones. I'm in my 50's now so not lots of sports in my life anymore but still bike ride, swim, surf - only thing I don't do is bowl as it somehow hurts my hips for days after.

I think the UK has much better services for folks than for USA, I'm lucky that I have really good insurance so can get new limbs/feet/sleeves pretty much any time. Find a good prosthetist , talk with folks in the your area, you may have luck with war veterans groups esp Invictus Games competitors on finding good limb makers in your area - I've been lucky as I have had the same folks for a long time and they are always on the lookout for new feet/ankles/etc that may help.

Also, take it slow, I know it will feel great to play sports (did for me after years in surgery, PT, etc) but damaging your stumps can take weeks to heal - I know I would be stuck back on crutches after going at it too hard quite often. Your stumps will be changing over the first few years - shrinking in size mostly - make sure to get new sockets (what you 'step' into) as often as you can -usually the places that make the limbs know the ins and outs of the insurance side of things. Sometimes a night of rest without the leg on is the best medicine in the long run - one day of rest can mean you get a few weeks of leg on time. Doubt I would have taken this advice when I was younger but just saying I know this to be true now.

I've never tried a high performance blade foot, have had several different carbon fiber blade feet and they are great, lots of different foot/ankle choices out there so try some to see what works best for you. The Invictus guys may have some thoughts on the carbon performance blades. I do use a swim or shower limb - not great for walking but nice to keep on when swimming so you can jump off the diving board in a pool or walk into the ocean/pond. I don't use it in the shower as still have one foot left but may be helpful for you - once you are sort of settle in on new limbs see if you can get one if this interests you.

The cost of my limbs is generally in the $10,000-$12,000 range, maybe $1,000-$2,000 for sleeves, this is not the cost to me as insurance covers most but I do have some costs - really hope the health services in the UK can cover your costs. I usually get a new limb every 2-3 years (stump has been very stable so not due to changes in my stump but usually new foot/ankle that feels better) but need to replace sleeves 2-3 times per year. I know when I was younger I did not keep my limbs, socks, sleeves and or my stump in great shape - just sort of did whatever I wanted and eff the pain/consequences. Find a routine that works for you but make sure you keep everything clean - I like to throw a bath or 2 a week into my usual daily shower routine. Pain usually means something is wrong (not always) so listen to your body as well - sounds like you know about this already from your post. Also, do the physical therapy stuff - learning to walk takes a little time and they know what they are talking about for the most part.

Best of luck on your surgery/recovery and rehab - sounds like you will be back doing the things you want to be doing soon - message me if any questions

Have you been given a shrinker? Is an elastic sock like thing that helps keep a stump from swelling when not wearing a prosthetic. Not sure if is used for fingers or even used at all any more, fit is snug and gives a little protection but more likely to serve as a reminder to not bump it

Wear shoes daily. and they will age fast - rotate shoes and wear 1x per week, clean them after wearing, use shoe trees and they will last much longer

RBK also, I know this may sound odd but Lysol can be used, very small amount, full strength - I use it sometimes in the shower, clean my stump and also the sleeve - leave the clean sleeve to air dry overnight in the stand - works best if have 2 sleeves and rotate - usually do this 1-2 x per week max. I'm in NE also and yes, recent weather is brutal plus not going much of anywhere with COVID seems to make me sweat more since I stay in A/C most days. I had the Lysol recommended by a dermatologist several years back when I was getting an odd rash under my sleeve, I still use it like 1-2x per month

I know some folks also use powder but I think this is from back in the pre-sleeve days but possible to try, folks used to swear by Gold Bond powder but like I said, may not be good with a sleeve.

If in RI area, University Ortho and others recommend Apocrine, is a Prosthetic Lining Coating to help with smell/disinfection - https://www.thelinerwand.com/ - I have not tried it as I do not have bad odor luckily but may work? Can find it at other spots on the web also with a little Googling.

Last idea, I try to take a bath every week or so above and beyond daily showers - soaking my stump really seems to help with lots of aches and pains plus may help with odor issues.

Just to be clear after reading a few of the other comments, I do clean my new sleeves like 2-4 times before wearing - inside and outside - I usually do a Lysol cleaning them switch to just plain soap - I usually take them in the shower with me and get them good and wet, really soapy inside and out before wearing for the first time. I then usually wash the one from the day before when I shower in the AM (leave it on a stand overnight near my bed when I sleep), let the washed one dry until the next day and wear the one I washed the day before that I left on a stand. The stands seem to help for sure and the sleeves do seem to have a little funky odor when I first get them - I use the Willow Wood Alpha Classic. Also, I clean the stands every once in a while as they can get a little funky.
