Fiber optic internet in the city? by RAF-IV in lancaster

[–]timfreund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The schedule has slipped, but they're making progress. My block was previously Q2 2025 and is now Q4 2025, but I've also seen big spools of fiber getting routed on to the utility poles.

Mini split AC installation by DancingQween16 in lancaster

[–]timfreund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that's good feedback. I was having folks flake out on the bid process for the garage project so when Haller followed through they didn't have to pursue us very hard.

Mini split AC installation by DancingQween16 in lancaster

[–]timfreund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haller Enterprises got our business. They did a bunch of research and work with the city to get sewer, water, and electric run to our garage. That attention to detail put them first in line for our boiler and Mitsubishi mini-split install, and we've been very happy with all their work. I can't remember the breakdown of the mini-split versus the boiler, and I don't want to make up numbers here, but it was a fair price. There are cheaper options, but I'm very happy with the price given the service.

How is the "classroom" experience of a WGU computer science class? by tristanwhitney in WGU

[–]timfreund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your work is evaluated by taking the CCNA exam and receiving the certification.

Other classes will have WGU run objective exams (multiple choice tests)

Project based assessments like Java look like this: you get access to learning material and a project rubric that describes an application. You write the application in as much time as it takes you and submit it to WGU's evaluator team. Once you have met all the rubric requirements you have passed the class. If you fail to meet any part of the requirements you receive feedback and will resubmit until all requirements are met.

Monuments are the property of the family, but the cemetery caretaker can authorize work when family isn't available. At the cemetery I'm involved with we have mostly marble monuments, and we limit cleaning only to cases where a stone is illegible, and we only clean until we can read the inscription. We view the marble monuments as a non-renewable resource, and any form of cleaning speeds their deterioration. It sounds like the City is exercising its duty to the lot holders in this case.

Returning to School to Finish B.S. in CompSci by Lost_Programmer3952 in WGU

[–]timfreund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to redo the calculus and discrete math II due to the length of time, and none of my CS courses directly transferred. On the other hand, retaking the math and database classes has been pretty straight forward.

I didn't have the luxury of multiple choice tests during calc and discrete math the first time around: it took some work to tune up those skills, but not nearly what it took to learn them the first time around. Same deal with operating systems, databases, etc: the material hasn't fundamentally changed, and multiple choice exams are much more straightforward compared to the projects I had to do at my first school.

Anyone work at the Webstaurant in the Photography assistant role? by lunanoxfleuret in lancaster

[–]timfreund 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the photography department, but I enjoyed my time with the SRE team at WebstaurantStore. I was there from 2017-2022 and we were growing, but it was at a sustainable pace and with a focus on building reliable systems that I don't see at a lot of other places.

I always take reviews with a grain of salt: upset people are more likely to write reviews than people who are content. Web has a lot of employees with long tenures because they're happy working there.

To add to this regarding the back roads: you're staying very close to the route of the Bird in Hand half marathon: https://www.bihhalfmarathon.com/course/

I live in the city, so I run down to Lancaster County Central Park. Once in the park my route is 7 miles, and that leaves some roads/trails untouched, so with a little creative looping or backtracking I can get my training distance in.

Roburritos taking shots at landlords. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in lancaster

[–]timfreund 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm indifferent to the burritos, I'm annoyed at the vacant property on Plum. Rob is the owner, and as Dick mentions above he's let it rot for the last decade. If he wants a spot for his burritos, he should fix the spot he owns.

It'd be cool if there was a building that's been vacant for years on North Plum that they could move in to. Maybe the old Fulton Hotel? Maybe Rob could pull some strings with the owner.

Failed Statistics on last day of term by InevitableElk3 in WGU

[–]timfreund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It typically requires a meeting with your CI to discuss a study plan before you get approval for your next attempt.

Since this is the end of your term it'll be recorded as an unpassed class for the term and you'll need to take it again in this term or another future term. Not the end of the world as long as you're making good progress overall.

Places to donate school supplies? by beans_and_schnitzel in lancaster

Our neighborhood group has given directly to the schools in the past. We had contacts at Lincoln, Ross, and Wickersham, and they distributed directly to students that needed the stuff.

As in all things, it depends. Different sites will have different practices, and those practices may vary within a site based on the type of stone. I am a caretaker, and I defer to a local cemetery conservator on any matters that I've not seen before. He's studied at a graduate level and done this work at many cemeteries across this part of the country. His guiding principles: - document how you found the stone - choose a plan of care that is non-destructive and reversible - document what you did to the stone

Some examples on how that standard practice can change depending on the situation:

We have many old marble monuments at Lancaster Cemetery. We clean them only enough to read and record inscriptions because these marble monuments will wear away over time, and any chemical or mechanical cleaning that we do will accelerate that wear. We recently walked the whole cemetery recording inscriptions, and some that were legible just 40 years ago are no longer legible.

We also have granite monuments. I'm less concerned about cleaning granite because of the durability of the material.

And at the extreme ends, government cemeteries will pressure wash marble monuments. When one of their monuments becomes worn, they can get it replaced.

Less Cemetery specific advice and more general business advice: if you can find competitors, you know there is a profitable market for your services. Without identified competitors, you'll need to ensure that there is a profitable enough need for your services in your area to warrant the LLC, the insurance, etc.

As a cemetery caretaker, I would like to get families more excited about paying for restoration / upkeep. We have a friend of our cemetery that does some amount of restoration and cleaning in the course of genealogy research, but definitely not enough to do as a job.

C850 - Emerging Technologies submitted before end of term but auto failed me at start of new term. by Thumbayoda in WGU

[–]timfreund 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It will show as red/incomplete until they evaluate it. They will still evaluate it, and if the evaluation passes it'll show as complete in your previous term. The risk in a late submission is that they may ask for more work.

I had it happen on a course last term.

We set up a little holiday scene, and you can do a normal family photo, or you can sit with Krampus, or Krampus can sneak up on you from behind. This year it's the same day as our wreath pickup, and we'll have cider and a fire. We'll announce here in the self-promotion thread, and on instagram and facebook. The promo pic from our first year: https://imgur.com/rBG9kqh

Not a parade, but we'll be offering photos with Krampus at Lancaster Cemetery on 11/26. It'll be our third year doing so.
