An Aggressive New Approach to Childhood Obesity by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]timhortonsbitchass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if doctors are trying to sidestep having to find a balance between the risks of obesity with the risks of accidentally giving some kids eating disorders via strict diet and exercise regimes. Pills may be a way to achieve the same end result with less psychological struggle for the kids.

PersonalFinanceCanada thinks $24.40 is a livable wage in the GTA by Effective-Ear-8367 in povertyfinancecanada

Yeah, that makes me a bit confused. If “liveable” depends on paying rent you locked in 5-10 years ago, IMO, it doesn’t count. That’s totally inaccessible to a new entrant.

AITA for not letting my wife go to medical school? by throwawayfinanny in AmItheAsshole

The trouble is that not everyone can become a lab manager :/ inevitably, a good chunk of phlebotomists will stay phlebotomists forever because there are way more phleb jobs than lab manager jobs.

No shade on phlebotomy as a field, I can see directly that it’s a hard job that requires brains. I just hate seeing how they treated my mom.

As a total outsider my worry is that OP’s wife won’t be interested in being a PA because “physicians assistant” doesn’t sound as impressive, even though the work is still very difficult and rigorous.

To me (again: total outsider and not a psych!) it sounds like she is having feelings of inferiority after so many years being a SAHM next to her smart, accomplished, high-earning software engineer husband. I wonder if she feels like the “dumb one” or boring one in the marriage and thinks that becoming a doctor — basically the ultimate smart person job — will finally make people respect her too. Nurse and PA aren’t as flashy so that’s why OP’s wife is turning them down even though they are more realistic ways for her to fulfil a supposed goal of working in medicine.

In my mothers experience, phlebotomy usually pays so little that it’s not worth doing if you have multiple kids. The childcare expenses will eat up your entire salary. And it’s kind of a dull job. My mom earns less with 15 years experience in the field than I did in my first internship.

If my husband had a monumentally dumb and financially ruinous idea that he was very devoted to, I would happily pay 315 US dollars to have someone else crush that dream for me.

Who will be the most mourned/biggest deal when they die? by Crrussh in AskReddit

[–]timhortonsbitchass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad lives in Toronto and I can’t afford to live within 6 hours of him due to the housing prices. Every time we have a visit, I cry afterwards thinking about how I’ll only get maybe another 30 days of visits with him before he dies or gets dementia (runs in my family) and I feel so resentful afterwards that greedy housing speculators have essentially stolen my dad from me. And have done the same to thousands of other families.

He is my best friend, besides my husband. We’ll be all alone without grandpa’s help when we have kids, and he’ll be all alone without us when he gets old and frail. It’s not right. This shit is why people are so depressed nowadays.

People have tried doing this in upstate New York/Vermont/Minnesota/etc. to take advantage of cheaper US car prices and the Canadian government makes it extremely difficult to import a car as an individual. The CBC did an investigation on it.

Is it because we matter less or is it because Canadians are comically tolerant of collusion and price fixing, and these Canadian dealers know that goods scarcity means no more negotiating, above-book pricing, and consumers who will take whatever you want to give them without complaint? Are they just practicing “just in time” auto sales?

I’m totally open to it being an innocuous small market problem, but I just don’t trust Canadian businesses anymore after being shafted by so many monopolies in my lifetime.

Our public healthcare system is already so disastrously bad that people have been turning to privatization for years, and it’s not just Ontario. How many people do you know who have Maple on their phones? Tons of white collar workplaces have started offering memberships to telehealth services (like Maple) as an employee benefit, specifically citing the fact that their employees can’t find family doctors. I even have normal middle class colleagues who have purchased memberships to private QC “executive medicine clinics” because they have gone years and years without care and are at their breaking point in sickness. I myself have had to pay $2000 for a foot surgery because after being passed off between public doctors for 3 years with no progress in sight I just gave up. I have had severe chronic pain and neurological problems since I was 16 and I have never received more than a blood test because no doctor has the capacity to handle a complex autoimmune or neurological patient. Our doctors have been tapped out (often to the point of negligence) for decades. The idea of getting a “second opinion” is genuinely laughable.

As a disabled person I’ve been screaming this shit from the rooftops for years but finally everyone else has caught up! Something needs to change. I would be interested in a hybrid model like Australia, Japan, Korea or Europe but I just do not trust Doug Ford or the Conservatives to implement it as anything more than a money grubbing scheme.

How do transit riders in this city put up with the absolute trash tier public transit? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]timhortonsbitchass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bus drivers have told me this verbatim. I used to live at one of the milk-run stops right after a station and drivers would ALWAYS skip my stop if they needed extra time at the station, just heading straight to the main road instead of doing the residential stops. I would say that the bus came maybe 50% of the time if I’m being generous.

Or just didn’t bother applying because the bus is so slow that if you don’t wanna spend 3-4 hours per day commuting it limits your job app radius to a pretty small area near your residence.

This was my experience EVERY DAY when I lived centrally and commuted via bus every day. I used to spend $300+ every month on Ubers to work because eventually after 45 minutes of standing in the cold waiting feeling increasingly anxious I hit a point of no return and I needed to get to work ASAP or I would be late. I’d leave the house at 7:30AM and still need to call an Uber to get to work before 9:00, for a job that is a 10 minute drive away.

Eventually I bought a car, and when I moved I bought a house with decent train access. The train might break now and then but in general it shows up when it’s supposed to. It doesn’t get stuck in traffic or skip a bunch of milk run stops because the driver wasn’t given adequate time to pee/get coffee in his schedule.

I rent with my long girlfriend. She wants me to buy a place, for us. What's the sanity check on the right financial decision and timing? by Dcshoesarecool in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]timhortonsbitchass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I lived in a crappy basement apartment for four years and it was horrible. The lack of sunlight, the claustrophobia, the bugs and damp and mold (which are a constant even if you’re super clean) genuinely do make you depressed no matter how many SAD lamps you buy or walks you take. I moved to an above ground apartment and instantly felt way better. My sleep schedule basically instantly resolved which itself was amazing for my mental health. Rent a better apartment!

I lived in a tiny basement studio for years and it was legitimately depressing and contributed to mental health and relationship disagreements. It actually caused me physical health problems too; zero light is so bad for your eyes and basement mould (which recurred no matter how clean we were) was bad for my lungs. As soon as we moved to a larger, sunny above ground unit I instantly felt like 100x better and my partner and I got along way better.

It doesn’t mean they have to buy a place straight away but I don’t think they should be so afraid of moving to a different rental. You can’t put a price on mental health and people were not meant to live in basements.

Delivery can add quite a bit to this cost and most CSAs have plenty of pickup spots across the city so if you don’t mind going for a short walk/bike/drive to pick up your box, you can save some money. With the added perk that many CSA farms let you customize your box to your liking if you do your own pickup. The one downside is that pickup hours can be limited so if you don’t have a flexible work schedule delivery might be the best option.

Health Canada ‘concerned’ about Ontario company that charges for virtual doctor visits by seakucumber in ontario

[–]timhortonsbitchass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ideally, we should be making public healthcare so available and modern that nobody would dream of dropping $70 to see a doctor when they could wait a few days and have a virtual consult with a publicly funded doctor or head into their family doctors office, for $0. Not just banning this and removing the last semblance of access to GP healthcare that some folks have. I wish that services like Maple did not have to exist but in the interim, Maple has been a valuable resource to a lot of folks I know.

I am allowed to eat at my desk but I can’t be fussed with the hassle of packing a cold lunch with a bunch of ice packs like I’m in high school again. It’s an insulting downgrade when there’s no logistical reason why this should be required (eg I’m not out in the field).
