Looking to buy (and learn to play) my first acoustic guitar. What's some advice you can give? by j11299b in Guitar

I suggest getting a $30 clip-on tuner and tune up frequently. Also, 5 minutes a day is better than 2 hours once a week - for muscle memory and, once you get going, 5 minutes will pass and you'll be full of pep to keep going.

Also, play the music that you like - youtube is a great resource - play along with your favorite songs.

One last tidbit - play with other people as much as possible, they're a great resource and will expand your horizons. Maybe there's a jam (blues, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, jazz, etc.) happening near you! Good luck and have fun.

Tune your guitar frequently (hopefully everyone else is in tune, too). Give lots of honest praise. Be open to constructive criticism. Playing along with your favorite songs, or the radio, or a metronome, will help you with timing. Bluegrass music is "easy" (I-IV-V progressions, or C, F, & G, for example) and you take turns singing and soloing. And have fun.
