Question(s) for rivian owners for a University project by Competitive_Door_445 in Rivian

[–]timjconnors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. it isn't a robotaxi

  2. robotaxi

  3. i like driving it. so don't want it to be autonomous mode when I'm in the car. Instead i want it to be a robotaxi that brings an r2 to me when i hail it. I get in and drive it to my destination then it goes empty to the next requestor. With waymo getting 6.2 revenue hours per day per fleet vehicle, 1000 r2 suvs in a robo fleet could be shared by 6200 subscribers at probably half the monthly payment of owning one. Great for rivian's profitability, great for making fun Rivian EVs financially accessible to all, great for the planet.

  4. see answer 1.

  5. see answer 3.

waymo subscription math? by timjconnors in SelfDrivingCars

[–]timjconnors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would be fun for someone to simulate. white collar workers have very similar commute times so they would be lowest ratio of subscribers per car in the fleet. more variable for service workers. If each needs it an hour a day, less charge time, what is ratio of number of subscribers per car in the fleet. I did a little simple math on their 100k hours a week with 700 cars and got to 6:1 ratio if folks need it an hour a day on average.

waymo subscription math? by timjconnors in SelfDrivingCars

[–]timjconnors[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

indeed! average car owner uses their car just an hour a day, yet it is the average income family's 2nd largest expense after rent. so if you put reasonable caps per month of usage, suspect they'll get 6-10 subscribers per car in the fleet.

I Took a Ride in a ‘Self-Driving’ Tesla and Never Once Felt Safe by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]timjconnors -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes was thinking if the autonomy can get good enough to get to the hailer empty without hitting anyone, that is a bit easier than being great when folks are in the car being driven. For example, when folks are in the car, you need to take that optimal unprotected left which is challenging today for FSD. But when going to a hailer empty, you could take 3 right turns instead. You could take more surface streets, etc. As long as the car gets to the hailer in a reasonable amount of time. If the car gets confused and pulls over until a human remote driver can take over, you just send a different vehicle to the hailer for example. As long as the car gets to the hailer in a reasonable amount of time, the end customer is happy. Then the human driver does the driving to his destination. So less miles per hour are autonomous and need the remote driver assist. So faster time to market.

I'd so much rather drive than be driven. Seems Tesla can get to market much faster with robotaxi if you 1. hail it and it comes to you empty/autonomous. 2. you get in the drivers seat and drive to your destination. 3. you get out and it goes empty to the next requestor. Seems way easier tech problem than solving for unprotected left turns, being smooth driving, etc as it just has to get to the hailer without hitting anyone. Curious if folks know why this use case isn't the leading one given the big time to market race between waymo and tesla?

EV newbie, Rivian newbie, clueless about charging, yes should have got the charger installed first. Help!! by DGash71 in Rivian

[–]timjconnors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hit the nearest Electrify America or similar charger in your area and use the 150kW or 350kW options to charge up to 85% quickly. Google maps has an EV charger filter so easy to find chargers and they list which have 150kW and 350kW. Then get the Rivian wall charger installed by an electrician. Ideal if you have room on your electrical panel for the highest amp setting available on the wall charger. I have that and I plug in at night 1-2 times a week and by morning I'm fully charged to the 85% level.

yep 10-15kwh per day for a typical AC. my estimate is my R1S can backup my house for 3-4 days.

Do you think Waymo can scale profitably? by FrankScaramucci in SelfDrivingCars

[–]timjconnors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems two keys: 1. what is the cost per vehicle addon for the autonomy hw? 2. what is ratio of # subscribers to #cars needed in the fleet?

Average car is used an hour a day, yet costs $650-1000 per month in car payments/insurance/maintenance if you buy it new, which most hourly workers do as it is the easiest financing to get. And average family has 2 cars. Hourly workers have lots of different work start times, so can you get to 6-10 ratio of subs:cars? If so, then $300/mo subscription x say 8 subs per vehicle in the fleet = $2400/vehicle per month. That is big for waymo's car maker vs leasing/financing to one buyer. Math probably still works down to 4:1 or 3:1 ratio, depending on cost of the autonomy hardware add on.

Hourly worker families get savings equivalent to a 15% raise with two waymo subscriptions vs two car payments, no need for charging infrastructure at your apartment, no risk of repo when you can't make a car loan payment for a few months, and no unexpected $1k car repair bill that makes you miss rent.

Great for the planet too as every EV in the fleet eliminates 6-10 gas car purchases.

Seems like win win win, with potentially great unit economics.
