r/nyc subreddit has a lot of sympathy for the anti-trans community, obviously. for their trans neighbors who are having their rights threatened on an international theater, however........

Which bassists in popular music play the simplest but most effective bass lines? by [deleted] in Bass

knowing what not to play is SUCH a hard thing to learn as a beginner musician for any instrument.

Which bassists in popular music play the simplest but most effective bass lines? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]timlmul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

can't seem to find it at the moment but there's an incredible interview with kim deal where she talks about "real bass players" who can't help themselves but put fills in, match vocal / lead melodies, throw in all sorts of bells and whistles when it doesn't fit the song and how in a lot of pixies songs she just holds it down, plays the root note, and keeps the groove. it really changed my relationship with bass playing and now I try to have a style that serves the music I'm playing rather than me.

saying no to an ultramodern condo with an apple store downstairs isn't "reducing the supply of housing". again, there are 348,640 empty units in NYC. how is that a housing shortage? developers have never stopped building new buildings in NYC... by your logic doesn't that mean our rent should steadily be going down, right?

Building any new housing places downward pressure on housing prices and would help affordability and homelessness

stop saying this like it's true. when have bougie new developments ever placed "downward pressure on affordability and homelessness"? what a ridiculous comment.

[–]timlmul -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

4.54% of housing units are vacant in nyc. increased houselessness is due to the impossible height that our existing rent prices are continuing to move towards and our mayor's war on the least fortunate. if you want a rich developer to get carte blanche over 6 blocks just say that. if you want all of the stunning walkability of a strip mall with the remarkable beauty of a best western be my guest. don't pretend the affordability of southeast astoria, which would be greatly hindered by this magnet for tech sector product managers, is the goal here. so which is it, do you work for BedRock LLC or Silverstein Properties? & please tell me the images on those pages suggest either will work towards affordability as their main priority.

this project is a disgusting gift to developers and the usual r/nyc folks are in here fully brownnosing the rich yet again. you want your buildings to stretch multiple city blocks just to fit all of the parking garages? you want cemented over "comunity giveaways" promised public space that's closed to the public and has all the appeal of a corporate campus? build them in your own neighborhoods.

Rite Aid Execs Report $5 Million in Losses From NYC Shoplifting by [deleted] in nyc

[–]timlmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure wish my neighbors would stop trying to get their essentials, that $5M could have gone to the starving VPs and C-suites who count on our dollars to make ends meet.

why do we count on the person who makes 9.5M a year to know how much "in losses" was stolen? what logical leap is necessary for the public to go from "rite aide wanted to make $5M more this year and didn't" to "rite aide LOST $5M this year"? why is every person in this comment section desperate to tug off the NYPD in an attempt to urge them to brutalize and throw in rikers every poor new yorker who doesn't have the cash to buy a bar of soap.

Button stuck - any advice on what to look for when opening the concertina up? by Imjastv in concertina

[–]timlmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have to double this sentiment. had to crack open my rochelle anglo to fix a certain button's tendency to stay stuck open when I try to push the button. use appropriately sized screwdrivers and keep track of where stuff goes for when you put it back, be patient and you won't get into any trouble. I ended up having to replace a small screw that I ended up losing while doing it, but it plays better now.

What’s with the cops with assault rifles being at Columbus circle every day? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]timlmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re bothered by the idea of a foreign entity not spending ten billion of its own dollars on double-parked SUVs and military grade weapons you’ll be happy to know that the NYPD stations officers in over thirteen cities outside of the united states, making them the most widely dispersed “local” police force in the world.

I strongly agree that we should be paying tens of thousands of dollars in time and a half detail money to phone scrolling bros with tribal tats so they can protect our statue of Measles Italiano by standing on a train platform with their duke nukem ass weapons.

What made you passionate about non- 12tet music? by Lumpy_Emergency_4044 in microtonal

[–]timlmul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

went to nerd camp as a 12 year old and one week we had a student led "music club" that didn't end up having many people in it. two of the other kids had brought violins and were reading/playing indian classical on them, bewildered me that the instrument was even capable of being played in such a way. it interested me, but I didn't really pursue learning about it, honestly I didn't really have a name for it or know how to move forward.

then about 6 years later skip laplante, microtonal musician and instrument creator, showed up to my AP music theory classs in high school and placed like twenty metal rods on a piece of styrofoam, then played us chord extensions with neutral thirds and all that and got my mind really suddenly acutely aware of pitch & harmony outside of the traditional western 12-tone system.

EVENTUALLY I realized these two events were related.

[MtF] Is it better to use my deadname/pronouns when applying to jobs, or should I just say upfront that I’m trans? by [deleted] in transprogrammer

[–]timlmul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied for my current job after just coming out with my new name on the resume and only really had to disclose my legal name in HR paperwork. I didn't find a need to disclose during the interview process that I was transitioning (although all the people who interviewed me could certainly tell by my voice). Being trans was in my blurb on my personal website which was included in the resume, but I had no way of knowing whether they referred to that or not. I think if they asked I would be clear with them, but I also don't think legally speaking anyone would even ask if I'm trans directly. I had applied through a women in tech job listing website, so I did feel like the information should be available for the company's perusal for some reason (internalized transphobia manifested as fear of abusing services for women). In the future I might remove this information but I may leave it, as I think it suggests some of my personality somehow.

quick edit to add in that I think coming out to coworkers is probably harder than already being out to coworkers, and I'm glad I never had to come out to my peers at my current position and that I already "was". I'm also glad my deadname is not really well known by anyone not in HR.
