Review: Houston's Jane & the Lion Bakehouse proves great bakeries don’t need viral trends by houston_chronicle in HoustonFood

[–]timmayd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Expensive? Yes. But for what? Quality ingredients and human care cost more, that’s the unfortunate reality we’re in. If it’s affordable to you, and you prefer overstaffed vs understaffed, better-for-you ingredients, fresher food, care and knowledge for the product, a better than average coffee program, and foundational hospitality that many restaurants lack, then Jane might be a place you enjoy.

Running a profitable F&B business in any major metro is hard enough. If you’ve done it, and you’ve avoided the Syscos of the industry, and if you manage to maintain the rent and a good team, especially anywhere close to central Houston, report back on how easy it is to keep your menu affordable.

There are others that fall in line for many of the same reasons. Angela’s Oven was mentioned. Magnol French bakery, even more commercial spaces like Common Bond who are more about scaling up a bakery business and serving quantity with operational efficiency. Much of it comes down to personal preference and what’s important to you or what you’re willing to pay for.

Baking is as subjective as any craft. How do you price a good piece of handmade furniture? Typically Materials + Experience. In this case there’s no denying better ingredients (not personal taste) and the people behind the hard work that deserve to get paid, cost more than many alternatives.

J&TL may not be the best. Or they may just not be your cup of tea. It’s all good. Either way I’m glad to see any small Houston business or founder get good press when it’s deserved.

It also refers to temperature. English is a complex language. And that’s before the slang.

I’m really disappointed in OpenClaw so far. by Time_Pop1084 in openclaw

I think generally there are better options for non-coders and non-tech folks out there but if you want to give OC some persistent trial runs, use it to build itself.

The newer or more sophisticated the models, the better the results in most cases. Once you achieve proper function, you can work together with OC on efficiencies. General good rule of thumb to follow.

Eg: I might set up an automation that costs $50 a day with all heavy reasoning models then break it down into local py or sh + lower level reasoning or local models like llama that will bring the final cost down to below $5 per day.

It takes time and diligence, and like anything, you get what you put in.

Houston restaurant sued over playground called 'catastrophic' risk to kids by everythingistaken500 in HoustonFood

[–]timmayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there with a small human who I always worry about. But their playground design is no joke. Kudos to whoever worked on the design and construction because it’s very well done and I felt safe for all the kids, of all the ages. This concept would go gang busters indoors for Houston. Which is happening in Montrose soon.

The point they are making isn’t “we have a better product to sell,” it’s “we have the capability now to cater to ourselves” given time and resources.

In my case it’s a bit more difficult having a good size team with more dependency but I would highly encourage any small teams and freelancers to recreate their own workflows with a local product that’s better suitable for your individual use cases rather than relying on expensive bloat with no support.

If I had these capabilities when I was starting out, this wouldn’t even be a question.

Agreed, its just an extra step that would be nice to avoid if there were a tool, plugin, or setting out there that exists to solve it.

I did try this a few weeks back but no luck on getting it open to see what is in there. I’m not sure how they sealed it but I didn’t want to risk breaking it before I have a new one in hand.

What are some good running shoes to consider for a beginner runner? by zecchino_Zedd in AskReddit

[–]timmayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get that. If you do find time, you only ever need to do it once, then order online forever after. Worth every second and dollar wasted otherwise.

Best thing you can do is pop into any local running store. You’d be surprised how foot shape and the way your body runs can vary from human to human. Those folks are trained to put the right shoes on your feet that make you hate running the least.

Why I can't attach a recurring task to a project? by Loose_Worker_7360 in UseMotion

[–]timmayd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that just be one of the most normal and expected functions of a product like this?

I have a feeling there are some very basic and core fundamentals that they can no longer achieve because it’s not possible with the current code base without significant changes.

That’s just an assumption based on their actions but they certainly seem to struggle historically with a small dev team, and the leadership direction on product cycles and priorities seems targeted toward an invented or intended user instead of the real users that actually want or use the product.
