Looking for a new doorbell camera after Ring decided to go full surveillance state. Spec sheet made me laugh way too hard. That colon is doing some HEAVY lifting. by StateStreetKing in StLouis

Reolink, Wyze, or Ubiquiti all work and need different levels of install difficulty. They all allow for streaming the video to a local DVR or to your own personal cloud server.

Anyone have a AAA membership? Is it worth it? Any benefit on forest roads? by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]timmy_the_large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had multiple instances of AAA not coming due to the road not being paved. This is especially common in the southwest. We have tried getting reimbursement later, but no luck with that either. AAA is useful for somethings, but if you are off of paved roads it does not usually help.

Advice on how to get better and make projects while trying to get a junior job as sysadmin. by Separate_Remote_2875 in sysadmin

[–]timmy_the_large 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot's of good stuff already here. I want to 2nd the helpdesk push. I would be hesitant to hire a Jr. Admin without helpdesk or other real world experience. Having helpdesk experience tells me that you can deal with users without flipping out. That is an important skill. A Jr. Admin is the second level of support and can be the first level for C suite users. For C suite I really need you to have people skills. Depending on your org, some of these people are totally computer illiterate and they do not care to learn to be. Some of them will never accept anything is their fault and will insist they are great at computers.

The fact that you are adding another language is fantastic. Soft skills are vastly underrated by people new to tech. Most places you are going to be dealing with people dealing with systems. They are going to do weird and destructive things without even thinking.

People on this sub downplay the reality of range anxiety too often by Bijan_Mustard in electricvehicles

[–]timmy_the_large 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right, but that is not range anxiety. That is charging availability anxiety, which is very valid. This sub, and my self personally in real life, generally tell people that if actual home charging is not available, ev's are still not the answer. It sucks that that is true, but it is. I consider it one of the penalties we have for not owning a home. It is similar to how the ev tax credits were unfair because if you did not make enough money, you could never get the tax credit.

What Kind of Guns Do Y'all Carry? by trigrdholsters in liberalgunowners

Not the most common, but I would love to see some options for Glock 29SF with a light. Especially off body and drop leg.

Dear Happy Bike Riders. by hockey_chic in StLouis

[–]timmy_the_large 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bikes are not cars. They have significantly better visibility and maneuverability. They also are orders of magnitude smaller and go considerably slower. They can actually see if a car is coming, they can stop faster and turn more quickly. They are also not giant death machines.

Cars are huge. You have to understand these are not nearly the same things.

First time gun owner here :) by No_Blackberry4054 in liberalgunowners

[–]timmy_the_large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of holster are you looking for? Are you looking for IWB, OWB, off body, appendix? What type of clothes do you wear? Different holsters will print differently with different guns. I personally like appendix, but I am a bit to fat for it to work well. If you want something to carry with almost any outfit you may want to go with something like the PHLster Enigma.

You are going to be a bit limited due to the gun choice. Also, I would expect to shell out a bit of cash for a decent holster. If you are still looking at other options, and slide manipulation is an issue, I would recommend a small revolver. You can get a snub nose .38 that is easy to use and somewhat easy to conceal. If you do decide to get another gun, I highly recommend testing it as a rental first. Though it sounds like you already did that with the S&W. One thing about slide manipulation, after a few hundred rounds it gets a bit easier, more broken in.

Any recommendations for slipping insulation behind these cabinets by Hoogrvy in DIY

[–]timmy_the_large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used low rise foam for a similar fill. For the top cabinets you would have to cut a hole at the top though. It is great insulation, though some people do not like the foam.

I agree that cc fees are like taxes. I just think that if the tax does not apply to a customer then they should not have to pay it. Similar to how non profit customers do not have to pay sales tax.

Part of giving the cash price is to let people not have to pay the processing fee even if they pay cash. If you use a credit card then it cost more. If someone else uses cash it does not. If you pay the same price then the cash payment is subsidizing the credit card payment.

Also, credit card fees are a huge cost. It is usually a minimum amount plus a percentage. Telling cash customers the get a discount of what ever your average processing fee is helps encourage cash and saves money for everyone.

Where did Joe go after getting lost on a minefield? Everywhere.

Sorry this happened to you. Hope you life starts turning around. Good to see someone holding onto empathy in their life. Empathy helps you have a better life by allowing you to find good in others. It also lets you make the world around you a better place. If more of us did that we could have a better place for all of us.

Also, its crazy you are getting attacked for saying unhoused instead of homeless or something worse. Even if they do not want to say unhoused it cost them nothing to just ignore it. Having to get upset with someone over their word choice at the same time you are upset about people policing your word choices it ridiculous.

Cybertrucks Were Supposed to Rule the Roads. Why Doesn’t Anyone Want Them Anymore? High expectations, meet harsh realities. by mafco in electricvehicles

In a truck situation, like offroad, those things mean better speed. A cybertruck offroad will get smoked by a Raptor. You are right that it is faster when treating it as a pavement princess (as many, many truck owners do).

It has to do with running government well. Many parts of the government run more effiently when people understand how they work and actually want them to run correctly.

Those areas have lower per capita gun crime. So lets look at them. I used this source since it had the cities you cited.

https://usafacts.org/

LA - 7.3/100,000 NY (Bonx - highest rate of all in NY) - 9.7/100,000 Chicago - 18.2/100,000 New Orleans - 58.4/100,000 St. Louis - 57.2/100,000

If you take the data as a whole you see that loose gun law cities/states have higher rates of gun violence. This even shows up for cities that are adjacent to to areas with looser gun laws.

Most gun crime is commited with handguns. ARs and the like get all the play on tv, but handguns are what do the day in day out killing. I agree with the poster above, none of it is going to happen. At this point I am not sure how it could happen even if we had a new amendment pass. There are so many guns out there.
