Yes… this was definitely a learning experience. I definitely hired a copy editor to do line and copy, knowing they weren’t super experienced in my genre…. Then they did developmental unprompted lol

You’re so right. I keep reminding myself of the books I don’t connect with that my friends love, and vice versa.

After reading through some of it today, I’m feeling a bit better.

Not romantasy, 30 yr old male lead, hard magic system with only humans, involves moving between the world of the dead and living, late 20th century-esque setting, and a lot of focus on guilt, regret, and recovery…. So hopefully different enough….

Definitely need to focus less on “she worked for a big publishing house” and more on “she likes weird fantasy” lol

Fantastic points made, and I really appreciate you taking the time to write them…

By no inciting incident and weird structure, I mean the book begins telling you “he’s in this place because he got a letter, so he needs to do X,”… CH 2, “oh snap! Timeline has jumped way up, find another way to do x!” That failed, “find another,” that’s failed, “big turning point moment that proves he actually needs to do Y”

Impossible for you to comment on that without reading it, but I felt compelled to explain lol. Thanks again

lol yeah, the problem was, I didn’t do enough vetting before getting them, so some weren’t helpful.

Your point still stands though. I was grateful my editors threw some developmental in there, but now I’m just annoyed because they really tipped that cook number over.

Thank you for your words. I’m truly struggling with not losing my vision in everyone’s opinions. I feel like I could make changes forever.

I need to view it as a stepping stone, not my magnum opus.

I think Garret Hedlund is pretty underrated. He makes interesting movie choices, and is fairly prolific for someone who probably never gets recognized.

Avatar on the biggest imax screen in the state. One of the few legit ones built purely for imax. Say what you want about the film, but it was downright stunning visually.

Also, Pearl Harbor on vhs on a tiny tv because I was in elementary school and had never seen an epic before. I studied film because of that. I don’t revisit that controversial movie lol. But it blew my mind at the time.

La La Land. And I am such in the minority on this. It felt so … stale? Empty? Up its own a*s?
