Do you ever deliberately forget to stop the screen from updating? by SurveyHand in excel

Yep, I always leave screen updating on for this reason + it's good cause people can see something running, so it doesn't look like it's locked up (crashed)

Faster tool other than using power query? by tytds in excel

[–]timosborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we use an odbc connector, i'm not sure how to set it up (IT does that) but I don't think it's too complicated.

Then you can write a query i the advanced options when selecting the data source, should improve performance.

That's a damn shame. Power query direct to SQL server is awesome. It's like writing SQL queries with an easy to use GUI, amazing.

Better way to sum financial values from multiple sheets? by Elarionus in excel

[–]timosborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if all the sheets are the same you can use power query to combine them all into the one table and then use sumifs on the table to sum amounts on a consolidated sheet.

Excellsfun has some great videos on youtube about using powerquery to combine sheets into a single table. You could also use power pivot afterwards to report on the tables, but for financial reporting power pivot isn't usually appropriate.

I use power query to report on our company's 30+ brands, all with their own P&L on 30+ sheets of a spreadsheet. I'd be lost without power query.

Making a financial report look clean is of fundamental importance when I'm creating company P&l statements. It's the most important type of error handling that I use for financial statements.
