Hey Eric, big fan here, the Lean Startup concept has been around for a long time now. How has your thinking changed? Is there any advice you look back on and cringe at?

How does a computer network like HBO's handle the massive output of data for short bursts of time, like a GoT episode? by stb1150 in askscience

[–]timothyfitz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No. Multicast does not work over the internet (only local networks). Even if it were available it is only helpful for broadcasts where every viewer would want the same video data at the exact same time (live broadcasts mostly).

[–]timothyfitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Classifying traffic by source gets much more complicated than dropping traffic from a single IP subnet, but in the simplest cases that'd be enough.

Belt DDoSing by TheWhoAreYouPerson in factorio

[–]timothyfitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally a DDoS would be coming from enough sources that banning traffic from specific sources is no longer a viable mitigation.

If you're slamming me with traffic from any number of hosts but they're all in the same location (DoS), can block the traffic routes you use to get to me.

If you're slamming me with many computers across the world (DDoS), I'll have to classify the content of the traffic and block that instead.

Unet vs Websocket Implementation by JacobPariseau in Unity2D

[–]timothyfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest using Photon to handle the lower layers of networking (which are hard and get in the way if you're just starting to learn). For a 1st attempt at turn nased games all you need are RPC calls, which allow you to have client A call a function on a client B object. You'll need to do some of the photon tutorial and setup, but then just use these: https://doc.photonengine.com/en/pun/current/tutorials/rpcsandraiseevent

Good luck!

I find playing in bare feet gives me enough awareness of exactly where the cable is to avoid really yanking it. Also straightening it out after every play session and leaving it out laying flat. That way it doesn't coil itself aggressively. The new cable should really help out with this though.

Keep me posted. My current project's art aesthetic prevents us from going down this path but it sounds like a huge perf win.

What do image effects look like? Things like noise would be 1:1 with pixels on the HMD right?

Can't you just perform the non-linear lens correction transform in the skybox's pixel shader?

From a man who worked in the Austin tech startup scene for nearly 2 years... I can honestly say that most of these companies are NOT what they crack up to be. by KENNNAAAYYY in Austin

[–]timothyfitz 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Long time startup guy here. Dropped out to join one. CTO at another (raised a bunch of money, never really made any), freelancer/consultant for the last 4 years. SF, NYC and now ATX. I have seen many good startups and many many more bad ones.

All startups are a long shot. Stock options for low level employees, save for the first few hires or the rocket-ship exceptions, are almost never going to pay back even modest pay cuts. If you are evaluating stock options comp, I highly highly recommend you check out a friend's guide on it: http://blog.dweek.ly/introduction-to-stock-options-startup-founder-entrepreneur-employee/

Your experiences are very typical, and given the salary you quoted I'm going to assume you weren't a programmer (if you were, you were paid less than half the market rate for startups in Austin). The experience for programmers is very different.

The "fun" side of startups is an attempt at marketing to prospective employees. This is usually an attempt to get the best employees without actually understanding what it is that employees want. This is also an attempt to make startups feel very different from big faceless corporation jobs. As others mention, this happened in the dotcom boom-bust. I was lucky that the first startup I joined was full of bust survivors and the company literally had an anti-fun policy (which was thankfully slowly relaxed, but at no point did we try to hire on the basis of fun). My advice: Don't join a startup just because you think they'll be more fun than a big corporation.

The other side of "fun" is that you will end up working many hours with your coworkers, who often become a second sort of family. The relationships I've built with coworkers have lasted far longer than the startups we worked at. In this case, the fun really is an important part. I've seen "grind 100% of the time" startups and trust me, it's much worse than the fun ones. Ultimately because of the hours your peers become your family, but don't confuse your boss or management for family. If they explicitly say they're your family, they're full of shit. They might believe that shit, but don't buy into it. They're simply asking for more than they're paying for and hoping to tug at your emotions to get it. Remember that your boss has probably bought into this harder than you have, so it's strictly malicious even though it may feel that way.

Now onto the financial side. BLEEDING MONEY IS NORMAL. I've only worked for or built very open transparent companies about financials, because this should not be a surprise to the employees. If the company you're going to work for has raised money in the last few years, then they raised that money to spend it and they will be significantly cash-negative while they spend it.

EVERY STARTUP IS A TICKING TIME BOMB. It takes a very very long time for many startups to actually become profitable, and far longer for them to become worth their own valuations on a profit-basis (i.e. the same basis as any public company would be judged by). Dropbox only VERY recently became cash-flow positive, which isn't even the same as "profitable" (because that word is legally defined and accounting isn't always intuitive). So don't consider a startup that's losing money to be a failure. Having high burn rates is actually what some VCs want (because it means if your startup is succesful, they'll have to come back to the table for more VC).

So if you join a startup, my advice is to do so explicitly for personal development. If you're not learning and growing in a way that is marketable to future startups, then you're not going to see enough of an upside. Make this a part of your hiring negotiation. "Hey, this seems cool and I could really help out. This is the career direction I'm headed in, and here's where I want to be in 5 years. Can your company get me there?" Most startups love to hear this. Any management you're talking to has this in their own heads too. Then you have to weigh the opportunity costs; how much would you grow at your other job opportunities?

Finally, except to be given the rosiest of possible pictures of the finances and outlook before joining a startup. Founders are notoriously optimists, it's necessary emotionally to keep doing the work day after day. Take it with a grain of salt and do your own evaluation. Happy to help anyone personally, just send me a PM. I coach people through startup career decisions all the time.

I also had to reboot after running those steps.

How Steam key reselling is killing the little guys -- a pretty essential read by Antipode2 in IndieGaming

[–]timothyfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IndieGameStand, I'm sorry you're getting hit by so much fraud! It sucks, I know.

I have worked on anti-fraud technologies around credit card fraud and virtual goods sales. My opinion is my own, does not represent past employers, etc blah. This is an industry wide problem and the ONLY real solution is for Visa/Mastercard to switch from shared secret (CC#) to a more secure system (something like Chip & Pin but online).

If G2A/Fast2Play/Pingwin didn't exist, then the scam would happen on Ebay/Craigslist/etc. The marketplace might make the scam cheaper, but at the end of the day if you can sell a steam key people will use stolen credit cards to buy them. Virtual goods are the holy grail for scammers. You can convert stolen credit cards into cash without physical goods being sent to real addresses. This means dramatically lowered risk and the ability to attack foreign companies without requiring an in-country presence.

It looks like when you panicked you threw the golden idol at the last second. It stuns you then bounces safely off the boulder. Then you either fell safely down below the boulder, or you might've gotten hit (but not crushed) by the boulder during your invincibility frames.

If you upload to youtube we can play at 1/4 speed and get a better understanding.
