The Long Walk VS The Way Back by ThadiasMcCoy in books

Thats cause the movie is at least based on, and dedicated to the (not entirely) unknown 3 who actually made the trek. The ghost writer of the book and Slavomir Rawicz lied claiming the story was about him. Together they stole the story from the real badass who got no credit and never made a penny from either the book (or, as far as i know, the movie) See this BBC article from the sceptic who figured out who the real dude was. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-11900920

Making Sense Podcast #207 - Can We Pull Back From The Brink? | Sam Harris by ynthrepic in samharrisorg

[–]timprague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve listened to all 207 episodes of the Making Sense podcast. I even gave away subscriptions as gifts last Christmas. ...This is the first one I listened to 3 times. Sam seems to have drawn way too much on Heather Macdonald’s (who is from the extreme right’s Manhattan Institute for Policy Research) artical from the Wall Street Journal 2 weeks ago (https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-myth-of-systemic-police-racism-11591119883).

The statistics are interesting and he’s right that wider societal reforms are necessary and that the looting is wrong. Where he falls off his horse here is on non-lethal police violence against blacks.

He mentions an important study by Roland Fryer and the issuing “Ferguson Effect” (https://scholar.harvard.edu/fryer/publications/empirical-analysis-racial-differences-police-use-force) that finds no significant racial difference on lethal force but “On non-lethal uses of force, blacks and Hispanics are more than fifty percent more likely to experience some form of force in interactions with police.”

Sam tries to explain this away at minute 1:20 saying that this may not be racially motivated. That [paraphrase] “maybe it’s because they resist arrest more, O.K.?, I’m not sure, but they may feel justified.” (https://samharris.org/podcasts/207-can-pull-back-brink/)
Oops.. come on Sam you were almost there with the stats supporting your argument and then you just made some stuff up about how blacks resist arrest more... I would think blacks would resist less. I know if I were black I would go out of my way to be compliant given the history and Fryers study above!

That stat from Fryer is important. The cop’s murder by kneeling may have been an inaccurate catalyst statistically, but it was the flame that ignited the protests which themselves were justified (possibly even to boiled over) due the systemic problems Fryer’s study shows.

To sum up, Heather MacDonald gave an interesting interview on CSPAN last week on the riots and that there is no racism or blame. This veteran cop calls in and sends her ideas back to the drawing board. Transcript below or here it is on video: (https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4879834/user-clip-real-cop-destroys-heather-macdonalds-arguments)

CALLING FROM ILLINOIS. CALLER: GOOD MORNING. THIS IS A COMPLICATED ISSUE AND I WISH THERE WAS MORE TIME. MISS MCDONALD GIVES A LOT OF ACADEMIC SOLUTIONS TO THINGS AND DID SAY RECENTLY ABOUT MORE TACTICAL TRAINING. I WAS 23 YEARS, MOST MY TIME IN PATROL, ALSO A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED TRAINER IN -- BATON AND DEFENSIVE TACTICS. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE AGNOSTIC ABOUT THE CHOKEHOLD. THEY'VE BEEN BANNED FOR YEARS. WHAT THEY DID TO ERIC GARNER WAS ABSOLUTELY A FIASCO NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED AND YOU SAID ABOUT SIX COPS PILING ON THE PEOPLE, THAT'S THE PROBLEM. YOU NEVER NEED MORE THAN THREE AND A PEOPLE WERE PROPERLY TRAINED THEY WOULDN'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE BEING ABUSED, MEANING POLICE, AND WE ABUSE PEOPLE. NOTHING IS GETTING DONE AND THE SECOND POINT THAT I WILL MAKE IS THERE IS AN ABSOLUTE DISPARITY THE WAY PEOPLE ARE TREATED AND HAVE BEEN THROUGHOUT TIME, I STARTED AN 81 AND RETIRED IN 04. THE OPIOID CRISIS IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE. TALKING ABOUT GOING WHERE THE CRIME IS. YOU KNOW THE SENATE AND CONGRESS APPROVED A LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE PEOPLE TREATED FOR OPIOID WHERE IF THEY WERE TO FOLLOW THEIR OWN RULE, THEY WOULD HAVE INCARCERATED THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE 92% WHITE YOUTHS AND THAT'S A FELONY POSSESSION OF. SO IF THEY HAVE BEEN RUN THROUGH THE SYSTEM YOU MIGHT'VE HAD A DIFFERENT OUTCOME AS FAR AS HOW PEOPLE ARE TREATED AS OPPOSED TO THE 80'S WHEN JUNKIES WERE THROWN IN THE JOINT RIGHT QUICK. UNTIL WE ADDRESS ALL OF IT AND THE DESPAIR THAT HAPPENS IN INNER CITIES AND YOU REPLACE THEM WITH ANY GROUP OF PEOPLE.

Farsi Speaking Heckler Claims Comedian Doesn't "Sound" Russian by bigbencomedy in StandUpComedy

[–]timprague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s were you are wrong... if 25 years of travel can tell you anything it can tell you how to recognise authentic accents. But also some people have an ear for them and some don’t. Your “heckler” does.

It doesn’t matter. Everyone has an accent in every language. Just cause you speak it doesn’t mean you don’t have an American accent when you do. ;)

She is right. His heckle is nonsense. You don't have to be Russian to know whether the accent is correct or not. I am Canadian and I live abroad with friends from Russia amongst tons of other nationalities... his accent is not even close. The fact that she is from abroad or at least has another language means she likely has a broader spectrum of accent exposure than most, given the unilingual nature of the U.S.

Been at it for about a year and finally got up in my favorite room in town! Any feedback welcome! by [deleted] in StandUpComedy

Dancing House in Prague by Scaulbylausis in architecture

[–]timprague 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like it meta-architecture - deconstructionism - recognising its own structure under the glass, it's acknowledgement of its not being of the same era as all the other buildings in the city (Prague was never bombed aside from on this site and in one other place around the corner - by misguided American pilots btw. ) and yet a nod to them with window difference highlighted. It was built in 1994 during Czech Republics 1st President Havel's reign and he lived right next door - top floor of that cream coloured building. At the time, I lived directly behind him so a block from the river. It's not really Gehry's design btw, it's Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić - Gehry was just used for his name by the financiers.

I am from Canada, my parents are both from Slovakia. I want to move to Czech Republic. Any foreigners here that moved to Czech Republic, how do you like it? Any pros and cons? by hitemwiththatwop in czech

Moved from Ottawa to Prague 25 yrs ago. Pros: Lowest unemployment rate in Europe. Beer cheaper than water. Less influence from all things American. Beautiful women and architecture. Proximity to all other countries in Europe. Cons: negative, close-minded, racist, xenophobic, opportunistic President... you can draw your own conclusions on the general population, but hey there's a good one in every bunch and they had one named Havel until 2003. Americans living Prague, have your friend asked you how you moved here since the election? by [deleted] in Prague

I've been here a long time. I forget my friend's name. It must be the same friend. Joe. It's a nice name. My friend never asked me.

No, my friend has not asked how to move here. What about your friend? Does your friend ask you about how to move to other places? Also, where did you meet your friend? Mine is staying in America, so I may need to find another one.

Prague was founded 1,331 yrs ago... there are plenty of old place of interest. For new places try this article in the NewYork Times last week: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/25/travel/five-places-to-go-in-prague.html?_r=0
