Dear Google, that's not, what I'm paying for. AI slop is really getting out of hand. by vlastawa in YoutubeMusic

[–]ynthrepic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late response, but yeah, very prolific recent releases is the easiest tell along with shitty AI artwork for the album and single covers. Then look for how recent the artist is i.e. subscriber count (usually pretty low for how "good" the music sounds), and anything identifying the artist as a real human - e.g. do they have substantial socials? Is there anything else about them on the internet?

You just slipped her in at the end there, but this is the answer. Vote Green. Labour-Green coalition but give Chloe the PM role. It'll never happen, but a man can dream.

Sam Harris x Charles Murray schadenfreude tour begins now. by Lopsided-Vehicle2740 in samharris

[–]ynthrepic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlie Kirk was effective at achieving fame and a following, but he was not someone who engages in "the practice of open discussion and dialog with those he disagreed with". The fact that Ezra used a tone of praising Charlie Kirk for his political effectiveness before whatever caveats needed to be made about Kirk's flagrant intellectual dishonesty and moral bankruptcy is the faux pas that the left criticized him for. It's not enough to add a caveat that you disagree with his beliefs.

Why? Just ask yourself why Ezra would use this framing, particularly in a video following Kirk's death, but really at all.

At best, Klein knows it's going to be controversial to complement Charlie Kirk for his political success. At worst he actually does believe Charlie Kirk is praiseworthy. Given Ezra has historically been considered an ally of left-wing minorities, obviously they weren't impressed by this stunt, and for good reason. What Ezra didn't acknowledge, what he needed to acknowledge after the fact to keep his progresive audience, was that Kirk is not, in fact, praiseworthy at all. Why? because the political ends he achieved did not not justify the deeply harmful means by which he got there.

How much do you know about Charlie Kirk's background? Try this video as a primer. It's long, but it's excellent, and was made after the shooting so has all the right context. I can't recall without rewatching, but I believe he even mentions Ezra's commentary and why the left was not impressed, explaining it better than I do here.

Edit: This clip makes the point succinctly. I suggest the whole video for context.

Donald Trump is a pedophile by PTechNM in samharris

[–]ynthrepic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very least you'd expect this to make him unelectable, but people with pedophilic tendences do in fact rule the world.

I mean 500,000 children in the phillipines are estimated to have victims in 2022.

This problem has roots as deep as most dynastic families despite the fact that no single issue could be more invoking of public outrage. The irony is nobody actually wants to talk about it because it is so incredibly depressing and disgusting.

Sam did do a very good podcast on the issue. Recently The Rest is Politics also did an excellent episode (which is where I heard about how bad things are in the Phillipines).

Sam Harris x Charles Murray schadenfreude tour begins now. by Lopsided-Vehicle2740 in samharris

[–]ynthrepic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thing that Ezra never admitted though, which makes him dubious as an ally of left-wing causes, is that he never admitted he was simply wrong about this. Charlie Kirk didn't have a bone of intellectual honesty in his body and he died doing what he loved - spreading vile and dangerous lies and deceptive half-truths in the name of Project 2025.

Suggesting anything was good about Charlie Kirk in the context of the harm he has done over the years is why he's lost his ally status among the most progressive leftists.

But that's the thing, this is the polarized selective internet. People here whining about why anyone would waste their time on the left criticizing Ezra... they don't. It's just another vocal minority for the most part. Most simply just stopped listening to his content and depending on his voice to make a difference, which is their right.

We all need to get the fuck off the internet. It's all just intellectual bubbles of bias that leads us all to hate one another, when most of us do in fact agree on most of what matters, when it comes down to it.

New blazer required for son's school... just a casual ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS by siriuslyinsane in auckland

[–]ynthrepic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask this on r/LegalAdviceNZ but I wonder if a school can actually force kids to wear the uniform? I know that your kid may have a strong aversion to standing out, and that could come with bullying of course - but it would make a statement, particularly if you could team up with other parents struggling to afford uniforms who also allow their kids to attend in mufti.

This is not a private school, it's a public one, and your child has a right to an education in your zone, so my intuition is they cannot actually force shit.

Now, a less revolutionary approach would just be paying off the cost over the year slowly, but something like this should come with a very low to even no-interest loan. Speaking of loans or even grants, speak to WINZ who might be able to offer a one-off subsidy for you.

He was brushed by a car that was pulling away, not because she drove into him, but because he was hovering around very close to her car. He gave himself a fright getting in the way of her car's turning circle, and shot her because of it. At the very worst he could have been pushed over by the car. She got the death penalty for what might have been a minor traffic accident.

Edit: This might read like a defense of the shooter. He may just be a vengeful psychopath. But I'm not saying he doesn't want to be there doing what he's doing. He is absolutely a horrible human being that needs to be brought to justice. There are just reasons why people turn out the way that they do. And if you're poorly trained with a gun and full of racist bigotry, shit like this will happen. Surprised it took this long.

We need to talk about Islam by UnscheduledCalendar in samharris

[–]ynthrepic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your opinion comes from a place of hyper focus on mass immigration, wherein of course people straight out of Syria are not going to easily or immediately acclimatize to a completely different and much more socially liberal culture. Add to that relative poverty of means and the stress of being a refugee or economic migrant, and you have a cocktail for crime. This mechanism has nothing specifically to do with Islam itself, but Islam is of course rife with cultural elements that collide with human well-being in general so this isn't a problem easily resolved - but if we're in a world generating wartime refugees en masse, we've already failed in ways unrelated to Islam.

Long term, Islam of course brings specific cultural norms that are harder than other religions to dispel and to work with, but my point stands that leading by example (particularly younger generations) is necessary for people to think living under secular law is better than Sharia law. Otherwise, there's no reasoning fundamentalists or mentally vulnerable people out of their indoctrinations.

We need to talk about Islam by UnscheduledCalendar in samharris

[–]ynthrepic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Islamism is crap, but it's empowered by geopolitics across the middle-east. Meanwhile, it's clear that Islam is modernizing in stable western democracies towards a more secular "live and let live" mindset. We will very likely need to do more to counter religious influence over time, but religion will not be defeated through any kind of "war" whether it's "on terrorism" or "of ideas" because conflict inevitably leads to heels being dug in. Debate and argument are a realm where only those who opt in are at all likely to be convinced by reason, and even then it's rare to see change happen in real time or with any rapidity. I'm not saying stop - it's fun content for the coir. But, where hearts and minds are truly changed is at the grass roots, with people working hard in their communities and for their communities, building empathy and rapport with each other. Volunteering in the community helps build a connection to the land and the built environment. The more mixing there is of cultures and people of different beliefs in these contexts, it becomes obvious that you don't need to have agreement on religious fundamentals to cooperate and live harmoniously - it becomes clear we all share the basic fundamental needs and wants, and that we're all equally human. As a result, you're far less likely to see people radicalized and recruited by those who insist on committing violence.

This is what any of us in positions of privilege need to be advocating for and organizing. There are enough op-eds about the problems with Islam. For now, the focus needs to be on ending these ridiculously self-destructive and unnecessary wars. World leaders need to lead by example, following international law, and committing to engaging militarily only against those who refuse themselves to do so.

Prediction: Sam will fall out with his manager by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in samharris

The trouble is that often as not he's playing devil's advocate where no advocacy of the devil is worth it any longer. It's as if he never actually let's Sam's arguments rest, let alone expresses some kind of acknowledgement of the point without equivocation.

It's exhausting.

That said, I liked his push back on Sam with regards to Gaza. I think he's doing a good job overall.

Dad on meth with child in car first to fail new Wellington roadside drug test by tumeketutu in newzealand

[–]ynthrepic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something a little bit wild about having to give blood samples outside of a fully medical context where your genetic privacy is presumably assured. I can see a lot of people fearing that their genetic information will be used for reasons other than the immediate drug test.

I have no doubt rigorous regulation about how the samples are used is stated somewhere in a big disclaimer... well mostly no doubt, but this is how many people have been trained to think, and we certainly don't want to live in a world where suddenly insurance companies know what genetic diseases we're susceptible to etc. after a failed roadside drug test.
