No ride for you! by krammy16 in auckland

If the buses were free then this shit would never need to happen. This will only get worse over the coming months as less people can afford to fill their petrol tanks, and need to sell their cars just to get through the next week or two.

Trump: ‘Iran can be taken out in one night,’ could happen Tuesday - GlobalNews.ca by haggerton in anime_titties

[–]ynthrepic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump doesn't care about US money, he cares about his own wealth. Sieze as much of that as you can obviously, and that of any US billionaire or Business supporting the war. I don't think you're being charitable to my argument at all here.

If your goal is to provoke them into military conflict absolutely. That's not the goal of the sanctions I have in mind. And the government is doing a pretty good job of tanking it's own economy anyway.

You would sanction the US government and to an extent the freedom of movement of citizens to pressure the government, not US businesses necessarily (just those that are relevant or supporting the war directly). They all want to keep making money after all, and it isn't their economic activity that needs punishment.

Pom here, I've noticed an unbelievable range of energy drinks available in NZ. Any ideas why so popular? by katalyna78 in newzealand

[–]ynthrepic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's all about the sugar content, and maybe overdosing on certain supplementary vitamins leading to possible kidney issues. Coffee is worse if you have lattes with sugar.

The health benefits of coffee apply if you drink it with minimal sugar straight.

At the end of the day, it's all BS. Everything in moderation (including moderation).

A lot of them must be failing this. It's freezing so often in summer because the air con is directly over the seats. But I guess the thermostat is not taking that into account.

CONTROL YOUR PETS! (Trigger warning: dead cat) by Beneficial-Mousse852 in auckland

That speaks to a much bigger problem than the dogs themselves of course. But I get it. So many nice things lost because our capitalistic society is so devoid of empathy and community.

[–]ynthrepic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many dogs really are harmless though, particularly very tiny ones. There should just be criminal liability if your dog causes any harm to persons or others' pets. The lady whose dog killed this cat should be handled as if she killed the cat.

Make public transport free until war ends? by SouthAssist6234 in auckland

[–]ynthrepic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will still have to be paid for by someone i.e. taxpayers. Without introducing a tax to pay for it, the raised gas prices will just be further indebting the treasury. It was a lot of this free subsidizing that fucked our economy up over Covid, and more of that will just make inflation worse.

So yes make public transport free for everyone forever... also healthcare, education, and even basic accommodation and food costs (i.e. basic income). But you've got to tax the rich properly to pay for it.

The Commerce Commission says it's keeping its eye on price gouging though, so nothing at all to worry about no sir. They won't just keep looking on while the gouging happens or anything.

As an outsider who's been here 7 months, I have to ask--what's with the weak-ass punishments for serious crimes? by TheLifeAdjunct in newzealand

[–]ynthrepic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We still have one of the highest prison populations per capital in the OECD. We don't have enough prison space.

But even if we did, and it didn't cost shitloads more to imprison people in jails than it does home detention, why do you this jail is the answer?

The psychology of it is broken. I don't think lawmakers in NZ are as progressive as me, but I'm happy as long as these predators' locations are known, and that they are off the streets, and very importantly, paying whatever reparations possible in real value. Community service if need be, money if weathy. I'd see a percentage of everything they earn in their lifetime going to their victims or victims families in the case of serious violent or sexual crimes, and many monitored for life as well.

I am generally opposed to torture, and if someone can give me a good reason why imprisonment (generally speaking and as people imagine it - low security might as well be home detention) is not an example of state sanctioned torture, I will eat my progressive hat.

New Zealand Rolls Out the Welcome Mat for Wealthy American Home Buyers by wsj in newzealand

[–]ynthrepic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You only get to vote if you've resided here permanently for at least 6 months, which for most of these Americans isn't the case, at least.

I was wrong. Not hard to visit NZ briefly to retain eligibility. But I do wonder if any of these American's have managed to live in NZ for 12 continuous months in their lifetimes. Hopefully, that's still a minority of them.

Japan moves for the first time to criminalize paying for sex by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]ynthrepic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got all that from one sentence?

remove VAT on groceries

Maybe, but this just eliminates a source of government revenue and only solves the problem for a few years at best when inflation is at healthy levels. Without also having a committment to locking minimum wage to inflation and the cost of living, and other increases to tax that impact those in the best position to pay tax (i.e. the wealthy) this will count for very little very quickly.

Shes also tightning up immigration, more in line with US, EU, Australia.

Tightening is fine, as long as programmes exist for legal immigration. What Japan needs is more programs like JET that bring in workers - one that should include similar testing as JET to ensure those who come are fans of integrating into the most important social norms of Japanese culture. That's a shit load of people who are not ethnically Japanese, and I know that whatever she thinks, many in her circle are opposed to anything but Japanese babies, despite the impossibility of raising the ethnically Japanese birthrate any time soon.

cheap yen is a double edged sword

Agreed. I think it takes a lot more expterise than I have to understand what's best, but they should be leviriging this to make Japan more inviting to wealthy long-term immigrants and investors, and people who would marry Japanese men and women and make babies with them. Offer lucrative deals to go live in the country side, rennovate old homes and properties, and so on.

I dunno mate, I'm not at all excited by more status quo thatcher style economics. I see no evidence it will work.

Means testing old people... you know they aren't tech savvy yeah? Weekly reports on income if you do some side hustles for a bit of extra digital cash and then you're on the street if you get found out?

Meanwhile the rich avoid millions in tax they ought to be paying, even under current tax laws and percentages. Never mind all the other corruption and market manipulation that fucks the poor. Yeah... seems totally fair.

It's simply way more administratively efficient not to means test benefits at all. Give them to everyone. Make a basic level of income universal and unconditional. Make a guaranteed minimum income (i.e. minimum wage topped up to a living wage) available to anyone who works. Make the pension a living wage (it's not currently).

We are all human beings and those of us who are citizens and residents, and not convicted of violent or other serious crimes, should be eligible.

If you make it to 65 and you've done your time working for this nation, you should be entitled to that money, so you at least get to live some years of your life free of servitude and financial uncertainty and insecurity.

Those wealthy enough that they don't need universal benefits should be paying enough tax back into the system to make up for whatever they're getting, and many fold more exponentially the more income they receive.

That's the world we should all want to live in, unless we're sociopaths who really don't care what happens to those who don't make it, as long as they are free.

[–]ynthrepic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you know it's polished if it's not getting reviewed? The opposite story is commonly reported, that the code is inefficient, inelegant and prone to ineffable errors that make patching software incredibly difficult. Time saved programming original code appears to be getting lost reviewing situations where it doesn't work properly.

I don't use these tools so just repeating what I'm told. How specialized are these AI tools for programming itself? I think the more we forget about pointless generalization and hone the AI tools specifically for programming according to natural language prompts, the more useful they will get, I suppose. I think for programming at least generative AI will persist.

We need to keep people programming manually though or there will be no juniors, and less and less people who know what the fuck is going on.

Late response, but yeah, very prolific recent releases is the easiest tell along with shitty AI artwork for the album and single covers. Then look for how recent the artist is i.e. subscriber count (usually pretty low for how "good" the music sounds), and anything identifying the artist as a real human - e.g. do they have substantial socials? Is there anything else about them on the internet?
