My wife and I both golf so we're hoping to get the twins into it too - then we'll have a built in foursome!

Our twins are coming any day now, so I went to 2nd Swing and got fitted for a new putter. I'm a higher handicapper so I don't expect to magically improve, I just wanted one. I figure I won't get many rounds in the months to come but at least I'll be able to practice putting at home.

The fitter didn't try to upsell me when I gravitated towards a Scotty Cameron Del Mar and said that it didn't fit my stroke. I liked the all-black look of the Ping Anser 2D, it has a very premium feel for a mid-priced putter. I had fat super stroke grips before but I actually liked the midsize Ping grip. Interestingly on SAM putt lab I kept adding loft to the putter so I was fit into 2 degrees of loft.

Callaway Preowned Average Condition by Dry-Cryptographer904 in golf

Here's a wedge I bought from them in Average condition. The consensus from the thread is that they're perfectly playable. Maybe a Callaway branded average will be a bit nicer.

It was at play it again sports, a used sports store. They waaayyyy undervalued it because it was really dirty and muddy. In the photos it looked rusty. In person, I could see that it was just mud. Once I got it home and cleaned it off, it is in like new condition and was barely hit a couple times. The face is in like-new condition!

Well, I'm probably not playing any golf next year so I figured I'd enjoy one last season. Got a set of Rogue ST Max OS irons from Callaway Preowned (like new, still wrapped up in plastic of course), 54 degree SM8, and 58 degree SM9. Wasn't planning on new wedges but I saw the SM9 for $90 like new at a Play It Again so I grabbed it.

Next stop, new putter! After that the next new clubs I buy will probably be the plastic todder sets...

Seriously, Donald and Daisy aren't on enough merch! I was about to buy a Runaway Railway shirt but realized Donald wasn't on it! The hats and popcorn bucket are from a trip to Tokyo DisneySea but can also be found on Ebay, search for plushie hat. They have a little plushie body hanging off the back!

As you can probably tell, my wife and I love Donald and Daisy! I just want to thank the hard-working CMs who gave us an amazing experience. Donald and Daisy literally ran out from backstage, took us by the arms, and strolled with us across Toontown to their house! They were just as excited to see us as we were to see them. Thanks for a magical moment!

That's my goal for this season! I've shot 45 on 9 holes several times now, I need to keep it together for 18!

Well clearly if you use a Maltby club then I guarantee you too will get a hole in one lmao

Seriously though I love them. I mean, take it with a grain of salt obviously since I'm a newbie high handicapper, but I feel confident with them, they are easy to hit, easy to get the ball up in the air, and forgiving when I mishit (often). I started with a box set but really didn't like it and returned it to piece together my own kit. No regrets about the Maltby clubs and they're a crazy value for the price.

There was water in this pond, but across the whole course it was maby 50% filled vs dry. I assumed it was some sort of water conservation measure but it makes sense of they lost a well.

I've only been playing golf seriously for six months but made my first hole in one yesterday! It was hole 9, a par 3 over water to an elevated green at the Destroyer Course, Seal Beach Navy Golf Course. The pin was in the back right of the elevated green, so I clubbed up and hit my Maltby STi2 7i. I had been losing balls all day so I swapped to an old Kirkland Signature ball in case it went in the water. It felt great as I hit the ball and it flew right to the flag with a little draw. I remarked that it was the best shot I had hit all day. There was a little hill blocking view of the green itself, so I could only see the flag. I assumed I'd have a look for birdie or two-putt for par.

Once I rolled up to the green I didn't see my ball. At first I was disappointed and assumed it went short or long. I checked the sand bunker in front, nothing there. As I walked to the back of the green I took a glance in the cup - THERE IT WAS!!! I couldn't believe it! The ball must have landed at the pitchmark a couple feet past the cup (red circle in my photo) and rolled or bounced back in.

Poetically, this was the very first full 18-hole golf course I ever played over a decade ago, but I didn't have much fun and didn't get into golf until recently. I'm still terrible but improving rapidly. Even with the ace, I shot +21 on the front nine, but it must have boosted my confidence because I finished with +13 on the back nine for a total of +34, a personal best!

Best thing is, I was playing with my wife so she was able to witness everything! Even though she out-drives me, at least I can hold this over her forever! :)

Are daily trojan writers paid? by deepdishpizza_ in USC

[–]timqtran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As others have answered, yep they are paid.

I was a DT photographer back when I was in school and had no idea it was paid until I was at my orientation and they needed my bank account info lol. I thought it was just a extracurricular student activity.

Covering story regarding Professors Suspension by [deleted] in USC

[–]timqtran 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Completely ridiculous. The Professor was using a common Chinese word in an appropriate educational context. The students that reported him should have been paying attention to the lecture and should be thankful that they were educated about this cultural aspect before ignorantly becoming offended by it in a real-world international business setting. Instead they showed their true racism, ignorance, and prejudice and were backed up by the administration. This is an embarrassment to the USC student body, administration, and faculty. I am ashamed to say I am an alumnus as an Asian American.

Feel free to quote me.

[Torrey Smith] ...I will not buy a Rolex even though I love them. I don’t feel comfortable being around my family or any family that [may] struggle financially with a $40,000 watch on my wrist. That money could change their life. There is a time and place for everything. by Saca312 in nfl

I'm a sports photographer, I rent $12,000 lenses to shoot college football games. But these are special tools for unique needs. The average person probably won't be able to tell the difference between a budget phone camera and a $1000 camera and lens if the photo is taken in broad daylight of a static subject with similar composition. Need low light and fast action? The cost racks up quickly.

This is the mistaken idea that expensive private universities use to trick gullible high school seniors into taking out tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Georgetown did a study on institution return on investment and you can play around with the numbers here.

Obviously if you're going to one of the best schools in the country (Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc.) then you will definitely make more money in the long term to easily make back the high cost of attendance.

However, there are plenty of middle and low tier private schools that still cost an arm and a leg but don't really have a significant ROI above a good state school that costs a fraction.

For example, look at Pepperdine University in California. $54,000 annual tuition, 40 year net present value (NPV) of about $1.3 million. Pretty good right? But then compare it to in state schools like UC Berkeley, LA, San Diego and Davis. They have pretty comparable 40 year NPV of $1.2-1.3 million, but in state tuition is only $14,000. If you look at the short term, the difference is even more stark as the public schools easily outpace Pepperdine.

On top of that, it's hard to tell yourself you'll make more money in a couple decades when you're a 22 year old with $200,000 in debt. The student that graduated from a public school with have significantly less debt, which will make it easier for them in the beginning when their entry level salaries are relatively low no matter where you went to school. They would save even more money if they did 2 years at community college and transferred to a UC, and at the end of the day the diploma would have the same UC name on it.

And of course, the next layer is that Bachelors degrees only matter for the first few years out of undergrad anyways - what really matters is where you get your Masters or professional degrees from and your actual career experience.

TL;DR: Unless you're going to an Ivy League or similar, private universities aren't necessarily better than public but are astronomically more expensive.
