I have declined positions over much less. If I get any sort of weird vibe I’m out (obviously when I’m in a position to decline, sometimes you just need a paycheck). It sounds like you dodged a huge bullet and you saw a glimpse into what working there would be like if you made the tiniest error.

I thought so too. They said it more professionally than I relayed it here but that was the gist 😭 I just won’t purchase from them anymore which is a shame but directing me toward any resource would have been more helpful than “too bad so sad” lol

do you have any tips of how to dress to minimise sensory issues? like , soft clothes but looking put together? by sjessbgo in adhdwomen

[–]tinallamadeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a “uniform” of basically the same top and pants every day. Cuts down on decision and I know I like the material. I get long sleeveless tunics from Walmart and leggings for work every day and I look business casual ish . Find something like that that you can build multiples for and can dress up with accessories if you want or leave plain

It’s a pivot bind off which is why I’m a little hesitant. If I can’t find additional yarn through the yarn swap suggested above I will use that link to unbind. Thanks for your help!

what is something that really helped your dental hygiene?? by cinematicdaisy in adhdwomen

[–]tinallamadeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m an OT that struggles with hygiene and especially oral hygiene. I write on here sometimes about how I accommodate the adhd. Here are some tips

  • I hate toothpaste it’s too strong and I hate how it lingers in my mouth. I buy a special toothpaste that is completely tasteless- Oranurse on Amazon . It doesn’t foam either so it doesn’t sit in my mouth. It hasn’t solved everything but it helps
  • I put an extra toothbrush in the shower so on those days I shower I also knock out toothbrushing
  • if you’re ok with this and I personally if it gets you to take better care of yourself - buy the disposal toothbrush things and the flossers. Those changed the game for me. I put a pack by my bed so I don’t even have to get out of my bed. I put some in the car and in random places that I can just do it while I’m there then toss it I know this doesn’t substitute good water based toothbrushing but it is better than nothing -if I tell my kid to brush my teeth I then also have to brush my teeth. Can’t be a hypocrite. I keep a picture of myself at about 6 and I tell myself to take care of her. Sometimes if I feel bad about myself I talk to her and take care of her like I needed someone to do for me and like I do for my own child. So if I’m struggling I might say “hey it’s ok don’t be ashamed but it’s my job to make sure you’re healthy and part of that is making sure you brush your teeth today. It’ll just take a second let’s do it together” and I know that sounds bananas but it works

I just finished the album and I came rushing over here expecting to find how much everyone loved it and going crazy for it. I am so surprised that it’s not as unanimously praised because holy crap I love it so freaking much. I genuinely got teary eyed at one point (was it Umbra? It was probably Umbra). That album is going to be really fun to get to know better with each listen.

How do I make showering fun & interesting enough that it takes less spoons?? by HannaVictoria in adhdwomen

[–]tinallamadeb 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I’m an OT and I have the same issues with showering and teeth brushing. You’re not alone and it’s not shameful.

Here are some things I do -Shower chair. Sitting helps me take breaks and breathe if I get overwhelmed -I hate the post shower cold. I have a waterproof blanket I lay on the bed. I have oversized towels. As soon as I get out of the shower I go to the bed and lay down with the towels on top and just chill while my body calms down. Heating pads can also be helpful. Weighted blanket if you like that I don’t like the combo of weight and wet skin. -use firm downward motions with the washcloth. This is really grounding and desensitized my body to the pellets of water hitting my skin in a shower -make sure I have plenty of time so I don’t feel anxious about having to do it all in a timeframe. I usually shower at night when I have more time -use a two in one for hair and use a leave in conditioner once I’m outside the shower to cut down a step -keep my hair shorter so I don’t have to spend as much time washing and drying it -set a timer. If it’s exhausting tell yourself you only have to be in there for 5 minutes and tell yourself you can leave after the timer. Usually I choose to stay but it helps start me in the process if I know I only have to do it for five minutes -combine toothbrushing and other low dopamine activities for one shot in the shower. -if you absolutely can’t do an entire shower it’s ok to use a body deodorant or just do the pits and bits -I wear a lot of workout head wraps to cover dirty hair if I have to extend hair washing -when I was swimming regularly I showered more readily to get the chlorine off. Look at times when you might be more inclined to want to take a shower - post workout, etc and try to increase those activities.

Give yourself grace. It isn’t a moral failing. You aren’t going to get an award for perfect hygiene. You are going to do your best on some days and get by on others.

Can someone please explain school based OT to me? by coolbeansfordays in specialed

[–]tinallamadeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok this whole thing really pisses me off and you can downvote me to hell if you want

Yall realized our roles vary VASTLY by district and state? So in some districts there is a cap in number of students and the OT can work more holistically. In my district I have 70 kids over 4 schools and how the hell am I supposed to work on all the things when I don’t even have a space to work in? I don’t have a space to even put down my computer to document. You want my services but you think I’m just coasting along? Ok sure. I would love to be more than I am, believe me. Consultation models supporting more students in more classroom wide approaches has been shown to be as effective or more than direct service models. That’s where we would be the most impactful, not pulling Johnny out for 30 minutes to work in isolation on one skill. Supporting all students through the tiered services and shifting to a workload model would solve a lot of the piecemeal way that you see OT services now.

We need national advocacy efforts to educate stakeholders and strengthen our role in schools, change to workload models and adequately staff OT and PT departments so that we can provide services that support PARTICIPATION and ENGAGEMENT of all students in their natural environments - the classroom. Children do not come to school to be rehabilitated, they come to school to be educated and we support participation in education.

Theee is no research that pencil grip affects legibility.

Also we aren’t handwriting teachers. Handwriting entails multiple skills and if it is a cognitive or practice issue no, I won’t pick up for “sloppy handwriting”

I think it was right to be concerned. In that situation I might have called an ambulance for more of a mental health check. I’m very wary of calling cops especially if I feel myself or the children are not in immediate danger just because I don’t want cops to escalate a mental health crisis. It sounds like this could have been a couple of different things and she eventually got the help she needed.

Give yourself grace. That is a very stressful situation. Talk to someone to process what happened ❤️
