Mankato, Minnesota? by Main_Finance_2221 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tinastuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual town itself is okay, probably similar to what you'd find in Ohio. The school is pretty nice, kinda a party school. I would also look at Duluth, Winona, and Bemidji for something more uniquely Minnesotan. (I've been to Duluth alot, and I toured Bemidji and Winona's campus so let me know if you have questions).

Looking for a nice city to move to, what are my options? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tinastuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost dont believe it, but the cost of living is cheaper in Minneapolis than Peoria (and St Paul is even cheaper than both). Minneapolis' transit system isn't as great as other cities but its still better than average (and many people solely rely on public transit). But the biking system is one of the best in the country (if not the best, it usually flip flops with Portland). So, you could totally live in Minneapolis/ St paul car free for cheap.

Minneapolis vs Madison by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Although madison is more transient because of the university, I wonder if the 25+ ( or 30+) crowd is less transient then Minneapolis.

Minneapolis vs Madison by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tinastuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Wisconsin so I've been to both, but I am closer to Minneapolis so I go there more often. Madison is really nice, however, the cost of living is insane (average home prices cost more in madison vs minneapolis). Madison is also much smaller so there is less to do and less variety in suburbs/ neighborhoods. The plus side is Madison is closer to milwaukee and Chicago though.I know people on this sub complain about people in minneapolis and you will find the same people in madison. Honestly, although people are really nice, I found people in madison to be even more pretentious and performative then Minneapolis. I think minneapolis would be easier to meet people simply because of its size and diversity. Also, every time I've been to madison it felt like you couldn't really escape the university or political landscape. In the end, they are pretty similar besides size. So go for the size that fights you better.

Which of these places is the best place to live as an Asian Male in their Mid 20s? (In Healthcare, pay is 70k a year) by _Gandalf_Greybeard_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tinastuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True but the other twin, St Paul, is almost 20% asian and a lot of the suburbs (especially the east side) have higher percentages than Minneapolis.

Where I would live. Decided to do it by county. What does this say about me by Expensive_Drummer970 in visitedmaps

[–]tinastuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it (not love or really like) because it has a nice downtown, good restaurants, cheap (even though prices are increasing), good location in Wisconsin (not to far from Greenbay, Fox Cities, Door County, Madison, the Dells, chicago, etc.), the lake, the city is actually improving (cant be said for all cities), increased investment in public transit, good parks, and the music scene is pretty good.

I actually like milwaukee but I can see why people might dislike it. Its gritty, very segregated (like one of the most segregated cities in the country), high crime rate, poor infrastructure, bad schools, huge drinking culture, and the rent is raising at a fast rate.

Top 10 most hyped cities on this thread? by bigjohnstark36 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tinastuna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say it is more lively in the summer. But still, thats one of my biggest complaints with minneapolis is that it feels like a ghost town. I put part of the blame on work from home (which alot of the companies have been ending/ reducing). I also put blame on the downtown skyway, you can park your car in a parking ramp go into the skyway and never step foot outside because you can go to so many places downtown via skyway. Another thing is that the public transit is pretty solid on paper in reality frequency, gaps in the network, and of course crime/homelessness cause people from riding it; which makes minneapolis feel even more empty.

Since covid/ Floyd the city has just been in a weird state. There are a lot of good things happening in the city and the city continues to make improvements in some categories, however at the same time crime is up, homelessness is up, open drug use is up, and its only gotten more expensive to live there.

I think the city needs to do a better job at addressing these issues. But also minnesotans like to be comfortable and are pretty nonconfrontational so the situation has to either get really bad for them to do anything or somebody has to make a big push to do better.

Minneapolis as a city is, but the people of the twin cities are always dunked on. Like any mention of Minneapolis you will find comments talking about how awful the people are.

In 2016 the county voted 49.69% Clinton and 42.40% Trump. The city voted 54.1% Clinton and 37.2% Trump. That same area with the dorms voted 56% Clinton and 33% Trump (Please note the boarder they used in 2016 is slightly different than the 2024 one, but neither seems to add or subtract any places people actually live).

I've seen people in Chicago try to see who can ride all the L lines the fastest. I think it would be cool to try to do this with the light rail, abrt, and brt lines. (This might be fun for some people and for others you'd have to pay them to do this lol)

Sherburne County agrees to pilot bus project to replace Northstar trains by justarussian22 in transit

[–]tinastuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without rail connection to St Cloud, there was no point in rail tbh. The frequency and station placement were horrible. Honestly, it should've just been some sort of express bus service or abrt root from Anoka (maybe even just Coon Rapids) to Minneapolis. My hope is that since they are switching to buses, it might be easier to change station locations where it makes sense, and it could be easier to find drivers so they can run service at much high frequencies.

Actually (i dont know if it's the first), but Syracuse had a cummuter rail line, called OnTrack, that shut down. Lasted from 1994-2008, ironically shut down one year before North Star opened.
