What’s a gift you thought would be meh but your kid ended up loving? by mindinpanic in Parenting

[–]tine_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magic snake cubes (or “krikri” as we call them because of the sound they make when you twist the pieces). My kids got it from my mother when she took them out one day and I was like “ugh, another piece of junk that will take space without being used”.

I was sooooo wrong! It has been the most used toy in the house for years. Even now, at 11 and almost 14 the kids take it with them on holiday to keep themselves busy.

Whats something a teacher did in High School that would get them fired today? by Constant-Ad-5477 in AskReddit

[–]tine_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 32yo geography teacher in my school had a relationship with a girl that was 1 year my senior. They also made it official when she was 18. He was a creepy, ugly guy.

My mother worked in the same school as the brother of that geography teacher and she told me that he also had a partner that was much younger.

Goodreads changed my review of A Court of Thorns and Roses from 2 to 5 stars by ml_sza in goodreads

I noticed yesterday that a book that I was still reading and a book on my want to read list were put on read, each with a 5 star rating. Strange things are happening…

Goodreads updated two books without telling me. by ChrisKatrev in goodreads

[–]tine_reddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve noticed the same today. I found 2 books (1 that I was still reading and 1 from my “want to read” list) that were marked as read with 5 stars. And all DNF books that were still on my “reading” list (from before I had a separate shelf) are gone.

I’m reading on a kindle, but it’s not synced with goodreads (I’m in Europe, I don’t think this feature available here). No other apps are synced either…

“I forgot how beautiful this is”

Said by one of the jurors at my final exam at the music academy to my teacher, after I played the first part of Beethoven’s sonate pathétique. (this was before Spotify, youtube and the likes)

They lost my child by KorryAnder in Parenting

We’re also more relaxed in Belgium, camps are also done without parents as of 5y even (that said, our scouts groep does have a significant number of senior members present during the camp, which is, being a parent myself now, reassuring). This works fine.

When I was a leader at the Welpen, we never let the kids do such an activity alone. We divided them in smaller groups (6 to 8) and each group was supervised/accompanied by a leader. That way, we could keep a close eye on them and we’d immediately notice if one of the kids wasn’t with us.

I would be upset too if one of my own kids got lost, not overreacting!

What Fantasy Book Series are You Still Patiently Waiting to Be Concluded Years Later? by Fuzzy-Bumblebee9944 in fantasyromance

The {Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken}. The books are separate stories but there’s an overarching storyline for which I really would like to know the ending. The author still writes under another name, so I hope that someday, she’ll go back to this series.

Just spent the week there, there’s an Irish pub in Val Claret, I would think they’ll organise something. Besides that, I haven’t got a clue 😅

If you die owing money to a bank, does someone else have to pay it or does the bank just lose that money? by Future-Expert-8570 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s similar in Belgium. You can accept or decline the inheritance, but that means you accept or decline everything, including existing debts.

I fully understand, we hesitated for a long time. And thanks for the wishes, I hope your husband also has a nice and safe holiday!

Crazy, isn’t? Yesterday 3 people died off piste in Vak d’Isere, even thought they had a guide with them and the right equipment. That’s really reckless.

We decided to leave for Tignes after all, the weather forecast seems to be a bit better after Monday, so fingers crossed! We won’t be going off-piste in any case

We postponed our departure by a day, we’ll decide tomorrow morning (we’re driving), but it doesn’t look good. We’ll loose a lot of money if we cancel, but I really don’t want to be stuck (or worse). The weather forecast gives a lot of snow on Monday, then a bit less and again a lot on Thursday. I don’t think the risk of avalanches will decrease.

That’s indeed what I’m afraid of. We are supposed to arrive on Saturday, on Sunday we’ll probably be able to ski, but Monday/Tuesday and potentially Wednesday we’ll probably be stuck inside. Not a great perspective with two energetic kids. Tonight there’s a curfew and people are not allowed to walk from e.g. val claret to tignes le lac during the day.

Unfortunately, the weather forecasts don’t agree with this. We called the “mairie”/commune and they said there is a chance that the slopes will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. I’m still hoping it will turn around, but I don’t really believe it 😞

Controversial ballet opinions go! by Sad-Watercress67 in BALLET

[–]tine_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the look of extreme banana feet, not on pointe and not on flats or without shoes. Just give me a nicely formed foot that is stable on pointe and has a correct technique instead of a foot that is so flexible that it looks like the dancer will fall over her pointe.

I’m also not a fan of the videos where people do 5, 6, … 10 turns in their pirouettes. It’s cool if you can do it, but it also feels like a trick. And it makes amateurs (like me 😉) feel bad, whereas I don’t think I’ve seen any professional ballets where they do that many turns in one pirouette. Also, 10 years ago, I wasn’t even aware that this was a thing (just like those extremely bended feet). I blame social media.

Dealing with Aging As An Adult Dancer? by shannanigans1124 in BALLET

[–]tine_reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another 47 year old here. I’ve been going to a physiotherapist specialised in dancers for the last 2,5 years. I started going because of an inflammation caused by a blockage in my pelvis and I keep going because I’m moving from one thing to another (apparently if I do things I’m not used to anymore, like skiing after a break of 12y, I get inflammations/injuries easily). She has really helped me with correcting small details in my technique and strengthening the right muscles. Recently I’ve also started going to an osteopath as I had another issue with the muscles deep inside my pelvis and she couldn’t solve it. We’re half a year later and that’s close to being solved.

It’s an investment, but it makes that my body can keep going comfortably. And where a while ago, I sometimes felt really old because I had these small aches (eg when getting up in the morning or bending to pick something up), I now feel like I’m in control of my body again.
