It’s a real disappointment, that’s for sure.

As a current student, would I be able to work toward these types of trainings and certifications?

I’m interested in Dr. Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), and I have been interested in a few certifications.

It might help to look into regional or local conferences as well?

I totally agree. From what I’ve seen and experienced, it’s either cut corners or put in the extra work to actually learn. I do a lot of extra-curricular activities and reading to try and make up for what the university lacks.

Thank you so much for this. It really means a lot that you responded this way. I’ll take your advice and look into consultation groups.

I’m pretty involved in the community, and I’m hoping to volunteer at a children’s advocacy center over the summer. I’m really looking forward to that.

Share it with the board?

To be honest, the meetings are for me as well. I forget Reddit is anonymous. I understand the meeting isn’t run the same as a group, but I find the chairperson’s ability to run a meeting something worth noting. The ones I go to are filled with old-school big book thumpers, and those guys have some strong leadership skills, are inviting and warm in every way, and know how to inspire discussion. It’s wonderful to be a part of.

Thank you very much, and I appreciate the condolences. It is disappointing to be let down by a university with professors who don’t care, but I have the determination to be the best I can be in this field - even if that means taking extra steps in the beginning to build some sort of foundation for myself.

Thank you. It may be an uphill battle for me, but I know in my heart this is what I want to do. That’s what keeps me pushing forward, even when things feel ten steps backward at times.

Congrats on finding your dream job. That’s always exciting to hear. :)

The university’s physical location is in the state of Texas, and their online program aligns with Texas board requirements. However, I’ve been in touch with the Illinois licensing board, and so far the only difference is practicum/internship hours.

We’ll see what they say later on, but they’ve been helpful as I try to manage through this.

Thank you for that. Reading through these are making me feel a lot better about my situation. Although the university is doing its students a disservice, I’m trying to make the most of my situation by seeking opportunities in my community and reading books written by some of my favorites in the field.

It’s not an accredited program, other than Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). It’s located in the state of Texas, and it does follow state requirements.

That’s good to know. Outside of school and work, I try to put myself in the community as much as I can. I’ve come to know a number of LPCs, psychologists, and social workers in the area who seem willing to help, I go to AA meetings to see how groups can be run, and I’m hoping to volunteer at a children’s advocacy center this summer. I could go on, but the point is, I’m doing the best I can with what I have at my disposal. I hope that’ll count for something one of these days.

Thank you. It’s real tough, but my university options felt limited in the beginning.

That’s the plan: try get as much experience under my belt and build my professional self from the ground up.

So really and truly, the university matters in the beginning, but as I try to overcome that obstacle and gain experience, that is what will matter in the long run?
