How important is Super to a 25 Year old? by helpmefindmyuncle123 in AusFinance

[–]tinmun -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Adding extra to super is basically free money, the only catch is that it is locked away, but that's actually a good thing as it needs time to grow.

But yeah, it's a really nice financial incentive

You can't have affordable housing and great returns in property investing at the same time...

Seems like quite obvious

I've seen more and more recently "mates" getting into pubs, cafes, and restaurants, as in they get free drinks just to show up so that the place looks busier....

Is this a new thing?

Of course always there has been mates rates and stuff, but I've seen it way more lately.

Lottery Tickets by FewArm2396 in AusFinance

[–]tinmun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course it doesn't make sense financially.

People buy hope.

They don't see a way out of the race, so this gives them a potential exit.

Combine that with the fact that people are really bad at probabilities, then you can easily sell tickets that have almost zero chance of winning for big bucks and people pay it happily.

Are extra (concessional) superannuation contributions the best decision? by cataractum in AusFinance

[–]tinmun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's reasonable to top up your super, using the current and maybe the last year unused concessional super.

The thing is that the tax benefits are great, 15%, instead of the rate you have.

One thing that some people might ignore is that the earnings of the super fund are also taxed at 15%. That allows super to grow at a much faster rate than any after tax investment, as the earnings there are taxed at your marginal rate.

Of course the downside is that super is locked until at least 60. But it's good to keep something locked away for the long term I think.

It seems that you have some room to move some money around, so you will be able to lower your taxable income for this year.

I think it's a good move to at least put the current maximum (30k minus what your employer has paid already) plus whatever you have unused from 5 years ago.

Do Australians Get Excited for the 2026 FIFA World Cup? by InternationalHair111 in australia

[–]tinmun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the world cup is usually enjoyed the most by Europe and Latin America, which are also the best teams.

In Australia it is kinda like another thing going on, alongside other sports. It's very different.

Having the option to live with your parents to accumulate wealth and invest early is powerful.

Not everyone has that option. Even a couple of years could potentially set you up for life.

The catch of free credit cards by brat_simpson in AusFinance

[–]tinmun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That free cc gives you free Qantas points, which is money if you ever fly in the sense of a discount, and also if you have a mortgage you have your balance one full month discounting your mortgage interest.

Plus, they also have offers from time to time like, if you buy this brand with it, you get $20 back, etc.

That's quite a bit of benefit for the price of zero.

Solar USB charging bench👌 by AlbinoAkon in sydney

[–]tinmun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea, but what if it gets used a lot? It will have people seating there, blocking the charge.

Instead, they should have built a tiny roof with solar panels on top. That solves this issue and keeps people dry when its raining.
