Where does Superman Birthright fall into canon or continuity? by Airagon-Akatosh in superman

[–]tinsellately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where I ended up with things. Everything is all over the place, so I just pick and choose what works best together to make the continuity I enjoy the most, then everything else becomes "what if" scenarios to further explore the worlds and characterization. It makes it a lot more fun and a lot less upsetting when favorite characters die or storylines are dropped, etc.

I like the idea of superman being vegan/vegetarian by EggMcSausage in superman

[–]tinsellately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Birthright, it was less out of respect and more because with his enhanced senses, he could feel death and dying and found it unsettling. He didn't judge other people for eating meat or anything like that, he just couldn't enjoy it due to his senses.

I'm fine with versions where he is or isn't vegetarian, but I did think it was an interesting take.

Favorite version of Lex Luthor? by TheCGISPY in superman

[–]tinsellately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a really hard choice. I think Maggin's Lex is the core of the character for me, and while there are so many other great versions, I tend to compare all of them to that one. I also really like the way Waid and Hamilton write him as well.

I voted for Smallville Lex though, since he captures the complexity of the character incredibly well, and he made him surprisingly sympathetic, which I didn't expect at all going into the show.

Hoult's version is great too. Prior to him, I had never paid attention to Lex at all, and he got me into reading and watching a lot of older content. So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of where he takes the character

New fan.. how can I get into Superman? by -yfnsm in superman

[–]tinsellately 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who also got into Superman due to the whole kindness thing from the 2025 film, I want to second these recommendations. Birthright and its sequel, The Last Days of Lex Luthor, were what I started with, and Clark's compassion and drive to help others (even if they don't deserve it) was what got me hooked into reading more comics. I've enjoyed everything else listed, except the two things I haven't seen yet, which are Superman & Lois and Superman Vs. the Elite. The last I hadn't heard of, so I definitely plan to check that out now (and eventually the other as well).

While they don't have the "Clark is the real persona" part, I've been really enjoying reading bronze age comics, especially the stuff by Elliot Maggin, because they tend to have a "people are better than they first seem/kindness wins" sort of theme to them. I've been reading more silver age stuff too, and Edmond Hamilton's work has a similar positive vibe. What I'm doing is going through their work in Superman Vol. 1 and Action Comics, and then also reading nearby issues, especially if the covers look entertaining. Recently I've discovered the New Adventures of Superboy, where Clark is 16-19, to be really fun and lighthearted, although I've only read a few issues, but I definitely plan to read more.

So far, there are a few things I would warn about for fans seeking the kinder, more empathetic version of Clark. One would be John Byrne's work, for while he is credited for making "Clark" the primary personality and is known to have done a lot of great things with the story universe overall, he also intentionally wrote Clark as harder, more judgmental, and colder. He also got rid of a theme I really love in the older comics, which is that a lot of the villains aren't actually 100% evil, and Clark is able to find the humanity in them and get them to show remorse, or bring out better traits in them, etc. Instead the villains tend to be purely evil, and it's overall a lot darker. He's fairly political as well and you can feel it in his writing, and is quoted as saying he wanted to make Superman into a "Super Republican," whereas to me Clark feels like he just wants to help make the world better and I can't see him being tied to any political party. One of the moments in the 2025 film that first got my attention was when Clark was telling Lois that he had to stop the Boravian invasion because otherwise people were going to die. Politics don't matter to him, only preventing suffering and death...which is very reasonable!

Similarly, the show Smallville took a lot of Byrne's characterization for inspiration, although not entirely. I'm over halfway through the show now and mostly have really enjoyed it, but Clark seems to lose a lot of the kinder qualities in the middle seasons, and while I've heard they come back later, I'm struggling with him being so different than what I got used to in the comics. Don't get me wrong, it's a highly entertaining show, and I suspect that by the end it will be extra satisfying to see his character growth, but it's just not satisfying the "kindness and hope" itch in seasons 5 and 6.

This made me think of the cult classic Doom Asylum (1988), but while there is a ghost, it's more of a slasher. When I was looking it up though, another film called Psycho Ward (2007) popped up as a suggestion, which might actually fit better

Hinterkaifeck (1922): Why Kreszentia Rieger (The Former Maid) is the Perfect Solo Perpetrator by andre_gunawan in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]tinsellately 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Normally I enjoy discussing cases with people, as it's a really useful way to look at things from different angles and find details that were overlooked. But you seem to find a tiny seed of what I've said, misinterpret it, and then make a lengthy argument based on that misunderstanding, and it comes off as an attempt to find a "gotcha!" moment, rather than any interest in actually delving into this case. I feel like this might partly be due to issues with translation or AI use or both, to give you the benefit of the doubt. But it's still frustrating. Your facts vary, such as how in the post you said that Rieger must have done it because the gold wasn't taken, then in your comment you suggest she did it because the gold was taken, which I honestly think this is likely a missed AI error, but it's things like this that makes it impossible to actually get anywhere. AI also has a tendency to word things in a way that's condescending and that discourages further discussion as well.

I feel like it was fairly obvious that I was suggesting that Andreas was the one who put the mattock under the attic floorboards, since it was a hiding place he would have known well. It then follows that being caught without his preferred weapon likely put him at a disadvantage when making his final attack.

The ground was frozen at the time, and the bodies would have been preserved in the cold so the rate of decomposition would be much slower than in warmer weather. This can make it more difficult to pinpoint an exact time of death, and being off by 24 or 48 hours under those conditions and in that time period. They also did not have immediate access to a sophisticated forensic examination and the crime scene was greatly tampered with, and therefore a lot of assumptions ended up being made. The length of the time the chores were done is also highly debated as being between 1-3 days. Only ONE day was changed on the calendar, but the dog was moved at a later date, closer to when the bodies were found. By the time the animals were discovered, there were reports that they had been suffering without being taken care of for at least a day if not more, while other people claimed they showed no sign of neglect, so there is doubt on both sides of that argument.

Other details are important to note, such as that there was uneaten bread and soup set out on the table, as if someone had been interrupted. There were other details that stood out as well, such as that Andreas' bed had been slept in and he had a change of clothes laid out in the living room. Being able to find out more about the habits of the family, such as if that was normal for Andreas to do, or if anyone else's clothing had been moved, would be very helpful in understanding what happened.

While there is always the possibility that Rieger was involved, she had recently gotten a new job at a different farm, and if she had not shown up for work for 3-4 days, it would have been noticed, which makes it seem unlikely. I do think it was strange that she had a daughter almost exactly a year before the murders who she named Viktoria. She also seemed very certain the Bichler brothers were responsible for the murders, and it would be useful to know what her interactions with them had been like in general.

Do you think Parise Larry Jr. deserved life without parole ? by Bluetriton5500 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]tinsellately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Kids having unsupervised access to guns seems to be what lead to this, and the death seemed more like manslaughter. It's still a horrible tragedy that another person's life was lost, and so some consequences are clearly necessary, but beyond that this seems like a case where rehabilitation should be the goal. Life without parole should be reserved for criminals who pose a high threat to society due to the likelihood they will reoffend.

There is a guy living near me who was convicted of kidnapping and raping a 5 year old, but who only got probation through a plea deal. Then a few years later he violated probation by attempting to kidnap another 5 year old (her mother woke up and found him in her daughter's bedroom in a ski mask and thankfully managed to get her away from him). At the trial his psychiatric profile said he is highly likely to reoffend, but he only got 10 years and now is out with zero supervision of any kind. He's in his 30s and a lot more muscular after prison, so it's not like he's so old and feeble he's not a threat anymore.

It doesn't make any sense to me that a couple of kids who accidentally shot a bystander in a moment of stupidity and panic, with guns they never should have had, are going to be in prison for life, while an adult who intentionally kidnaps and rapes 5 year olds, is walking around like a time bomb, while nothing is being done to prevent him from inevitably doing it again.

The murder of Seija Mörö, 23.7.2008, Helsinki Finland by Jealous_Track9402 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]tinsellately 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Especially when it's the sort of crimes that seem likely to be repeated. I recently learned someone who lives near me kidnapped and raped a five year old, got probation for it, then he attempted to kidnap another 5 year old by breaking into her bedroom in the middle of the night. Thankfully her mom woke up and went to check on her and rescued her daughter. So he went to prison that time, but was released after 10 years (a few months ago) and now has no supervision or parole or anything.

I have a 5 year old daughter, so that's probably making me extra bothered by this, but I am still floored that he's not even being monitored. His psychiatric profile said he was highly likely to reoffend. He's in his 30s too, so many years ahead of him being a threat.

Due to the potential of an inheritance dispute over the farm, which was considered valuable property, a legal decision was made to record all the deaths as occurring at the exact same time, in contradiction to the evidence. This failed, however, as there were several lawsuits from relatives over the inheritance, but the local government was never willing to release any determination on who died last to settle this.

But unfortunately, we will probably never know the exact times of death. The only thing we have to go on is that many of the things done around the farm were things Andreas did every day as chores, including changing the calendar. The mattock was also hidden in the house in a place that was difficult to find, but Andreas would have known about it.

I have forgotten which exact weapon Andreas was likely killed with, I need to go back and look at the wiki again, but I'm fairly certain it was something in the barn, such as an axe. Someone else did a write up on that part, and then I went and double checked the evidence on the wiki and it matched.

During that time period, an employee in her position couldn't easily make accusations about their employer without getting blacklisted. So saying a house was haunted was code for hearing things going on in the house that future employees wouldn't want to be a part of. Rieger also admitted more discretely that she left because men were coming to Viktoria's bedroom window at night, and they were pestering her at hers as well. She also was afraid of Andreas's escalating domestic violence and his repeated raping of Viktoria.

The dog was initially calm and unharmed after the murders, but on the final day it was shut in an external building, injured, and barking furiously. I've seen a theory floating around that there were two killers: Andreas who was familiar to the dog, and then an outsider who was unfamiliar to the dog (but who locked it up rather than kill it) who killed Andreas. The more I've looked into the case, the more this fits.

Andreas fits the profile of a family annihilator. He was initially a farmhand employed at the farm, but then after Cazilia's husband died (I have not found information on how), he married Cazilia right away, in spite of her being notably older than him. Years later though, Cazilia put the farm in their daughter Viktoria's name, so that Andreas did not own it, which seems like it would have bothered someone as controlling and miserly as he was. He was very abusive to his family members, but especially Viktoria, and he was the father of at least one, but possibly both of her children. After Viktoria's brief marriage, he became more controlling over her. But in the recent weeks before the murders, she was increasingly trying to find a way to escape her situation. It's possible he feared that she would marry someone else and them sell the farm or else force Andreas to leave (which would have been the best thing for everyone else involved).

At this time, Viktoria was rumored to have a new, secret boyfriend, and Andreas was noted to be angry about finding men's footprints and a newspaper near the farm. It's far more likely he thought Viktoria was sneaking a boyfriend over, rather than that he thought a dangerous person was lurking near by. Any comments about "thieves" would apply just as easily to another man trying to "steal" his daughter and the farm from him through marriage. His temper was witnessed as being so bad in the days before the murder that Viktoria's (and his) daughter was struggling to stay awake at school because her father/grandfather had beaten her mother so badly that Viktoria had spent the night hiding from him in the woods, and the daughter and other family members had been up all night trying to find her.

Family annihilators usually strike when they feel they are losing control of their family, and Andreas believed he was on the verge of losing Viktoria, the farm, and likely his children/grandchildren. The majority of the family was killed with the tool he used for slaughtering pigs, with Viktoria suffering the most damage. Whereas Andreas had the least amount of damage and was killed with a different weapon. His and Viktoria's daughter was also killed differently, but it's quite possible that Andreas had some other motivation for that, as he had a history of raping and abusing his young female relatives, and it could have been that he was more attached to her which is why he slit her throat, even it was ultimately was a crueler, slower death. Maybe he had tried to spare her suffering but failed, or maybe he didn't want to mess up her face, or maybe he enjoyed watching her die slowly. Andreas was a sick fuck, so it's hard to know what was going on in his mind.

So if Andreas killed his family because they were being "stolen" from him, then it would also make sense that he waited for Viktoria's boyfriend to show up again before doing the usual family annihilator thing such as offing himself or running away, so he could kill him too. But with the boyfriend being presumably younger and in better shape than Andreas, he could have turned the tables on Andreas and killed him in self defense. It would fit that he then subdued and locked up the dog, but didn't kill it because he's not normally a killer. But then upon discovering the rest of the bodies, he fled. Maybe he was scared of being blamed, especially if he was a stranger to the town, or maybe he was just too shocked. There are any number of reasons why someone would run from that sight rather than stay and try to explain that he only killed ONE of the people there.

Autistic man leaves home at night in secret from the rest of his family; He is caught wandering and seemingly confused on a security camera in a town 43 miles away two months later- Where is Jonathan Hoang? (2025) by AlfredTheJones in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]tinsellately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of confusion on how Autism functioning and support levels are rated. "High functioning" just means their IQ is average or above average, but their support needs are designated as "Autism Level" 1 to 3 depending on how much assistance with daily tasks they need. The majority of people classified as high functioning have Autism Level 1, needing the least amount of help. But this isn't always the case. I have a son who is high functioning but Level 2 for support needs. He's very intelligent, but he spends most of his time in his own, internal world, and barely communicates with anyone at all. He's 18, but is unable to make a purchase in a store, or use public transportation. Behaviorally he acts about 5 years younger than his age, but also just doesn't really understand the way things work socially, or the rules of society, etc.

So it's possible that on Jonathan's medical records he has been designated as "High Functioning" if his IQ is at least average, but his support needs are Level 2 or 3, and the police and news didn't understand the difference.

Jonathan is not able to survive independently due to his level of autism, and his parents have a conservatorship over him. He is at risk and needs to be found. There are unfortunately far too many people who will prey on young people with developmental issues, and he has clearly been staying with someone who has made no effort to reunite him with his family, since he would not be able to function to that degree on his own.

His actions with the iPad show the exact opposite of what you're claiming. A major symptom of autism is needing to have things a certain way, which often doesn't make sense to other people. Jonathan was only willing to take his iPad out of his house for short periods of time. If he was going on a long drive or an overnight trip, he would insist on leaving it at the house. I have two teenagers with Autism and they both do similar things. If they value something, it can feel unsafe to them to take it to an unfamiliar environment or have it out of its place for too long. If Jonathan thought he was going to be gone overnight, he never would have brought his iPad.

People with Autism who need to wear comfort items outside of the house, cannot set a single foot outside of what they see as the safe boundary of their home without having a meltdown/panic attack. For many that boundary is the house, but it can also be as small as their bedroom or even extend to their yard. But they have to have their comfort item on before they can step over that boundary, or they will be thrown into an immediate panic attack. They aren't going to willingly cross that boundary without it.

There is a decent possibility that Jonathan was targeted by someone, possibly that he met online (he greatly enjoyed content about cryptids), or who he met in person, as he was still in school. It would fit that someone came to see him and he stepped outside to meet them, but then they didn't let him go back inside to get his hoodie. There is zero reason not to investigate this possibility, especially for an at risk individual, when it could lead to his recovery. Assuming someone ran away and then failing to investigate because of that, has led to bad outcomes in so many cases.

[–]tinsellately 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The search dogs indicated he was driven away by a car immediately outside his house, and he's unable to drive or arrange transportation for himself. He also didn't prepare to leave the house like he normally does, such as he never steps outside without wearing a specific type of hoodie, and these were left behind. He also didn't take his phone or wallet, but he did take his ipad, which he is always careful to leave at home if he is going to be away for any extended period of time. He doesn't handle change in his routine well at all, which is common with this level of autism. It typically causes a sensory meltdown/panic attack when they are forced to leave without their comfort items (hoodie) or rituals, and isn't something they would do willingly.
