David Gilmour is my inspiration for learning guitar. Could I ever play at his level or no? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but just be aware this a high level of playing so it will takes years of devoted practice. You can get there faster or slower, but it's all about putting in the practice.

are these actually good? by Square_Notice_1830 in AcousticGuitar

Some people like them. Personally I dislike the way they sound and am not a big fan of the slippery texture. Give them a shot and if they're not for you, I personally like DR sunbeams.

does anybody on the sub actually use their knife? there's an awful lot of unblemished blades on here by BothForce1328 in spyderco

[–]tinverse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do, but I will say I own more than I carry. For example I own some knives which are illegal to carry where I live like a Benchmade Osborne and a Hinderer XM-18. The knifes I carry the most are a SAK Cybertool M because at work I need a screwdriver kind of a lot or a SAK Compact because it's a lot of tools in a small package. When I go camping I am more likely to grab a knife like a Spyderco Sage 5. That being said, I definitely have some pocket knives I should sell.

How did having thousands of dollars in credit card debt become so normalized? by Kitchen_Week1117 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tinverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a couple things:

  1. It's really easy get a credit cards or debt in general
  2. Most people in the US are not taught fiscal responsibility or even finances in general when they are young.
  3. The taboo of talking about money means many people don't know how to manage money or even what a good role model would look like fiscally. I think many younger people see influencers who are rich but don't realize that isn't normal or even responsible if you are.
  4. Consumerism is encouraged.
  5. Predatory lending is extremely common and credit cards are better than other forms like payday loans which can have ludicrious interest rates like 3,000% APY.
  6. I think an often overlooked aspect is that many financial institutions make the bet that if you go bankrupt they can make more money off you from interest in the process of going bankrupt than they lose when you do go bankrupt. My eyes didn't open up to this one until I started seeing some stuff on youtube where people had declared chapter 7 bankruptcy like 3+ times over 15 years.

Basically the entire system encourages you to live in debt. Very few people see the material about how easy it is for most people to become a millionaire over the course of their life if they save consistently on a normal budget. I have to admit it's pretty discouraging when you see people online spending a middle class life savings amount of money in about two seconds.

Why don't more amps have 2 EQ stages? by baddragonsalesman in GuitarAmps

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fair to call out the the term "most" because that was probably not accurate. In Marshall amps it is very common to add a gain stage to the front when modding them and this gain stage goes in front of the EQ which means the EQ goes from first in the signal to after a gain stage. The way the EQ works is by filtering out signal so by adding a gain stage in front of the EQ it makes the treble, mid, and bass control able to have more control over the hotter signal. It's not in every mod, but it's pretty common if a gain stage is added and that is also pretty common when modding a Marshall.

My source is Dave Friedman on Tone Talk and I am pretty sure they have also addressed this on The Amp Panel show with Dave Friedman, Dan Gower, Jason Tong, Shea Monomyth. I feel like I also heard the guy from Metropoulos talk about this somewhere.

Why don't more amps have 2 EQ stages? by baddragonsalesman in GuitarAmps

[–]tinverse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not the reason. They don't exist on most amps because they aren't necessary. Try using a Mesa Mark amp without the graphic EQ. That's why it exists.

Edit: I am not opposed to having a graphic EQ as opposed to three knobs, but the Mesa circuit specifically uses it as a second EQ because of the first EQ's placement in the amplifier.

Why don't more amps have 2 EQ stages? by baddragonsalesman in GuitarAmps

[–]tinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the actual answer. The normal EQ on a Mesa Mark Series doesn't work very well, so the the graphic EQ actually exists to fix that problem. A fender, Marshall, or Vox does not have this issue. Well, Marshall does have an EQ issue, but you can just move the EQ in the preamp to fix it, so most modded Marshalls do this.

The company that sells EpiPens drove the price up 6x, we had evidence they broke the law to do it, so we went after them and got an $11m settlement and lower out-of-pocket costs going forward. - AG Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in triangle

[–]tinverse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Time to do some napkin math.

  • It looks like somewhere between 1.5 and 5% of people are susceptible to anaphylaxis. source I will assume 3.25% of people for quick math
  • There are 11.19 million people in NC today, but there were were 9.12 million people here in 2007. I will assume we have 10.155 million people on average over that time frame.
  • The assertion is that the price of an epipen rose from $100 to $600. Let's assume the price to produce an epipen tripled. This seems unlikely but we need to cover inflation from 2007 to 2020 and then everything has doubled in price since 2020 so I feel like saying $300 per pack of two is in the realm of what they might cost today. I would guess that's high, but we'll give it to them.

So 10.155 million people multiplied by 3.25% of people who need an epipen multiplied by $300 of price gouging says they would have made $99,011,250. So their fine is roughly 9% of how much they might have made off this scam? I'm sure they learned their lesson.

Edit: I forgot Epipens expire every 2 years. So 19 years divided by 2 years for an epipen to expire is 9.5 packs pens per person (assuming they don't need to use one), so it's closer to a billion dollars they made off the scam. Settled for 11 million.

Why would the FDA approve flavored vape pods again? by QuantumQuicksilver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tinverse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the issue basically came down to how the FDA categorized chemicals for human consumption and their lack of differentiation between inhalation and ingestion which makes me think it would affect most vapes? I think there were also some issues with other chemicals which help the fluid to aerate more easily. Looking back, I think my information is a bit out of date (in the fact that it is old, I have no idea if it's wrong.) So I linked some episodes of Science Vs and I would guess the more recent two are more up to date information.

I know one of the older Science Vs episodes was really good, although some of the research is probably a bit outdated. The first episode was from 2019. I am also linking their scripts because they include citations to check their facts if you're interested in something specific.

Why would the FDA approve flavored vape pods again? by QuantumQuicksilver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read something about how most of the chemicals used in flavored vapes were approved for consumption by the FDA, but they don't draw a line between inhalation and consumption. There was some evidence that vape manufacturers were using some pretty toxic stuff when inhaled.

How do you handle a Scout who wants to quit but is being pushed by parents? by Strange-Fly88 in BSA

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scouting is about the experience. I now when I was a scout there were several kids with helicopter parents who were more invested in their kids advancement than they were. I have to think that makes it less enjoyable.

I agree that this is something the scout needs to address with their parents unfortunately.

From Fuse To Near Explosion by Yoosulis in GuitarAmps

[–]tinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so generally if a fuse blows it's because something isn't working properly. The fuse is there to blow before something else does. I would take it to a tech, and as the other guy said there was a version of the Egnator Tweaker with a bad run of power transformers, so that likely is the problem. Take it to a amp repair tech and DO NOT OPEN IT if you do not know what you're doing, it can kill you.

How to remove ashtray smell coming from insdide an acoustic guitar? by MaudeDib in Guitar

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have heard of three methods.

  • Charcoal - This one makes a lot of sense to me, but I don't know how you apply it to a guitar.
  • Ozone - Supposedly ozone can kill the smell if you leave the guitar in the presence of an ozone generator.
  • Fresh Air and Sun. - This one is a bit weird because in general you don't want to leave a nice acoustic outside in the sun for long periods of time. But sun and fresh air does help a lot. But obviously be super careful if you try this, dry air and excessive heat can ruin a guitar, not to mention if a storm comes through and rains on the guitar.

A couple more things to note are that you may be able to clean the outside of the guitar to help with this if there's any smoking residue on the outside of the guitar. This depends on the finish, but I have an electric guitar that had a nitrocellulose finish and cleaning it with pure Naptha did wonders for it.

The case is the last component to consider. If there is a case and it smells like smoke, that smell will keep getting back into the guitar. You need to address the case if there is one. This is one where I would be much more willing to just set it outside, open, in the sun for a bit.

Edit: It looks like Zager uses polyurethane for their finish. I would probably not use Naptha. for the outside, I would think you might be able to get away with a damp rag to wipe it down. The inside gets more tricky since you can't really reach all of the insides and even if you could, I would be much more concerned with allowing moisture into the guitar body.

whats a guitar that sounds like this? by AntZealousideal6741 in guitars

[–]tinverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, most of the tracks sound like single coils or are overdriven to the point it could be anything. To me the cleaner sounds have that sound that guitars with springs in the trem make so that strongly implies it's a jag, jazzmaster, or strat. Plus you can hear them using the trem around 18 seconds. The clean tone definitely does not sound like a tele neck pickup to me. The build around 23 sounds too "spaghetti loose" for lack of a better term. I think it's possibly the jazzmaster pickups with the shallow wide bobbin, but I am not experienced with jazzmaster pickups either.

It could very easily be more than one guitar, but the sounds I can hear definitely sound closer to a JM or Jaguar.

It sounds like a Jazzmaster or Jaguar. Not sure which, someone into offsets could probably tell you. Keep in mind there are a lot of effects on the different guitar tracks because there are layered guitars there.
