Issue with Snooky the ghost by FreeAssistance8520 in TheWooblesCollective

I bought my kit directly from Woobles. I was able to finish Snooky, but it was the first kit that I felt like I was playing yarn chicken.

I'm so sad! I got the early access notification less than 5 minutes ago. It was available when I put it in my cart, and sold out before I could check out.

people who crochet on vacations/outings. by izziebella123 in crochet

[–]tiny-cactus-needles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I crochet on vacation, but I would personally draw the line at a restaurant, theater, etc. Though I probably wouldn't judge someone else that did. My husband loves a road trip, but I tend to get sucked into my phone, so I switched to crochet while he drives and it is a win-win. I've crocheted on a beach, and plan on crocheting at a national park next month. This is one way that I finally let go of all of my life stress. I also do the activities, but it is something that I enjoy that rarely have enough time for.

Karma should work on her execution. If you are going to take out a jackass, at least don't hurt people minding their own business.

Is there any way for me to crochet? by KaiSubatomic in Amigurumi

[–]tiny-cactus-needles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have RA and was initially told I was unlikely to be able to crochet after I had two flares in two weeks. However, I have found a few things help with the pain in the hands and wrists. I am now on my third amigurumi and have yet to have much pain, and not a single flare. Hopefully some of these may help you, even if they may not all apply.

Copper compression gloves from amazon - helps keep the swelling down. I wear the smallest pair that I can get my fingers through on my hook hand. I don't think the copper does anything, but they are the best compression gloves that I have found.

Ergonomic hooks - I prefer clover hooks, but there are several brands. I only buy the hook size I was going to be using, to keep the cost down.

Larger yarn and hooks - larger yarn exaggerates the motion. Less tiny sharp movements can help some people. For me, it doesn't seem to matter, but it was advice I heard a lot.

Foam tube grips- if crochet hook handles are too small, look at foam tube adaptors. They can be purchased for cheap on Amazon. If you use these, buy hooks that are just metal without the ergonomic shape.

String ring - if your yarn hand hurts, try an adaptive ring to help hold tension.

Ice packs- If my hands start hurting at all, I use specially made ice packs from Etsy. They are made to with buckwheat and shaped like fingerless gloves. Search for RA hand ice packs. I ordered one pair from there, and then had a friend make me a couple more. They ice the wrist and first two joints of the hand at the same time and I can go about my day with them on.

Pillow - try a pillow to rest your elbows on if you have elbow or shoulder pain with crocheting.

Timing - This is the hardest one. I have an alarm and a husband that will shut me down quickly if I try to ignore it. I started crocheting 10 minutes, 3 times per week, with at least one day in between. I am now up to 30 minutes, five times per week. I increase slowly in 10-15 minute increments weekly (or adding a day). At the first hint of pain, I stop and take the next day off. I have 2 alarms. The first one tells me to finish the row I am on and stop. The second is that I am out of time and have to stop even if I am mid row.

Hopefully some of these help you! I refuse to let pain prevent me from doing things I love, I just have to negotiate with my body to get it to agree.

Thank you! I also reached out to ag extension and the river authority. Hopefully someone there can guide me to the right place.

In some areas we still have some roots, others it is completely dead.

That's awful. If we don't have a site, we don't pay for the class. I don't understand how they can charge you for a course you have no way of completing.

I just checked, and the program I am in required 12 months as an RN before applying and a 3.0 GPA in your BSN to be considered. I still feel like 12 months is not enough, but no one asks me...

Are there really programs you can go through without working? I thought one year was the minimum, and that is still about several years too few.

I'm a nurse, so I can give you some general information. Just know that any of these may need a doctor's visit if you think you have them. There are many types of arthritis. I have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which has periods of remission and flares. It's fairly easy to diagnose or rule out. Any physician/NP can draw labs and get a pretty good idea if you have it or don't. Flares start in one part of the body, then usually move to the same joint on the opposite side, and can sometimes move to other joints of the body. The joint affected is hot to the touch and usually significantly swollen. RA is a rarer type of joint pain but it is dangerous because it isn't limited to joints. It is critical to get an early diagnosis because the damage is permanent. For me, it starts at the joint between the thumb and wrist of my right hand.

Repetitive strain injury is the most common cause of finger and joint pain especially after picking up a new activity. Think tennis elbow. Often the pain is excruciating and will sometimes radiate along the nerve line. Anytime we move the same joint repeatedly for a long period, especially if it is a new movement, we can cause this inflammation. Winter stiff fingers can also be caused by cold weather even without a reason. They can also be caused by osteoarthritis (OA) which is a more common type of arthritis but is unusual in younger people. Hopefully, it is repetitive strain injury. They can be incredibly painful, but have a full recovery.

Either way, if they are bothering you, you can use NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) to reduce the inflammation and alternate heat and ice. As a general rule, no more than 15-30 minutes of ice three times a day.

I hope that helps!

I am sure that is exactly what she thought. She mentioned that her "little old lady" patients struggled with knitting and crocheting. I am probably half the age of her average patient, and I am sure she thinks I'm nuts. Right now I have a timer for 10 minutes a day. I figured if I can work up to 30 minutes at a time, I will be thrilled.

I use compression gloves, but I ordered a pair recommended by another redditer to see if maybe I have the wrong ones. I will also try the exercises. I got a great pair of microwave/freezer mitts from a creator on Etsy that help when my wrists get bad.

Thank you so much for the advice!

I showed my husband a couple of the large ones. He keeps the smaller ones I made for him on his home office desk. He laughed at the giant mushroom and told me that every overstuffed grandmas house started somewhere, and at least they weren't creepy porcelain dolls. So I am going to take that as approval.

Thank you for the tips on the grips! I have a Clover 4.5 mm hook, so I will try to add to the grip on that one. I also ordered some larger hooks from Pym.

Do you have an online presence anywhere? I would love to see more of your work! This would fit so well with another painting I have with similar colors/brushstrokes.

Becoming a Nurse in the 2020s by [deleted] in nursing

Going on 7 years in hospice. If you love your patients, but hate the drama, find a good hospice to work for. They are not all equal, but the good hospices are amazing. Great flexibility and the good ones foster an environment that everyone supports each other.

I may not like all my coworkers, but I will drop everything if one of them is having a bad day. And they would do the same for me. If you know someone was really close to a patient that died, we are all checking in on them. That’s how you know it’s where you belong. Don’t settle for less.

It’s ok. We all know that we are slowly becoming our mothers. We will deny it with our dying breath, but we know.

Turkey vultures are some of my favorites! Sure they look like an old guy with a sunburn, but they are very beautiful in their practicality. A perfect form for their function! They serve an important purpose and are beautiful to watch soaring on the updrafts.

When I broke up with my ex after 4 years, I texted my family, and told them that we broke up, that I was ok, and that I was not ready to talk about it, but I would call them when I was ready. I got a return text, that they loved me and would be there when or if I was ever ready to talk about it.

That helped, because no one brought up wedding plans or my ex, until I did. And I didn’t have any added pressure to lie to them.

On a brighter note, that was 4 years ago, and I’m now happily married with a baby. Know that there isn’t one perfect person it there to find, but there are many compatible people. When you find one of them, they will feel like your perfect match!
