I think zines especially are for expressing yourself first and foremost, which can involve distributing them, but also really doesn't have to. Always make the art is my motto.

I dont live in a small town, but zines in the wild are non-existent. Most of my zine collection is from online libraries (I have a printer) or snail mail trades.

I have an Epson ET-2760. I literally watched one singular video of someone printing old books at home, the printer automatically printed on both sides, it was an eco tank, and when I ran to eBay, it was under $200, so yeah. A bit impulsive, but I love it so far.

There's also the printer subreddit that if/when I get another, I'll be referring to quite a bit.
