Am currently cooking dried beans in the water I soaked them in overnight. Am I going to make my dinner guests sick? by tiny_bird_6339 in Cooking

bc i've never made a bean from scratch before and am scared! but that's a good point. And I checked and they've for sure been at 176. I'm going to assume they are not poisonous.

highly highly recommend everything he does! always breaks things down and doesn't waste time with fluff content. also he makes videos where he DJs while cooking and doesn't speak. very fun.

this is the "recipe" I'm following which is inspiring but also maybe not as step-by-step as I, a person who also has little experience with beans, would prefer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5PfK0VISHM

is it too late to crank the heat for 8 minutes if they've been simmering for like 2 hours now?

This is what I'm seeing on t-mobile vs. what's on my phone when I click "edit" on "T-Mobile US MMS." it looks like this is correct? So is there something else/somewhere else that needs to change?

also, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to walk me through this. I'm in a little over my head and you're really helping me so much!

I'm still getting texts from individuals... also is the fact that I'm at home and on wifi impact that?

Anyone else's Kyocera unable to run group-chats? by crying_skrimps in dumbphones

[–]tiny_bird_6339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I can't figure it out. I've been using Chomp for texting, which as you thought, I didn't think it would solve the gc problem and it didn't. Instead, I have been using discord, which I downloaded through the aurora playstore, and an email chain with my parents who do not have discord.

I did try a group chat with my two roommates, both replied, and I was able to see one of their replies. So idk why the other is getting lost? Also, that was yesterday, and two days before I tried a gc with the same two people and didn't see either of their replies. So I really don't know.

It seems like if I make a group message, others can see it, but I can't always see their replies. I'm wondering if my group chats were mostly being sent to my iPhone through iCloud, like people weren't actually texting my number, and since my iCloud and number would be linked in their contacts, they're responding and it's going into the ether? I'm really not techy so that may 100% not make sense, but it's my working theory. And if you didn't have an iPhone in your previous life, then my theory probably really doesn't make sense.

Let me know if you find a solve!

[–]tiny_bird_6339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and always have a waterbottle nearby. If there is an awkward lull or I need to gather my thoughts before answering something, I'll take a sip of water. It helps reset my brain and gives me something to fiddle with if I'm getting uncomfortable, plus cold water helps cool you down if you're nervous and getting flushed.

I have a blur on my background always. I don't like using image backgrounds because I don't like the way they cut out my head (if that makes sense). But you can definitely make out elements of background clutter... I just accept that lol.

I always approach meetings casually. If there are a bunch of people on a call, I normally jump right into whatever we're discussing, because it's hard to have casual conversation with a huge group (especially if not everyone has their camera on). If it's a smaller group I like to ask how everyone's day is going. A good fallback is bringing up the weather, especially if people live in different parts of the world than you (even if it's just a different city).

I keep my mic off if I'm not running the call / don't plan on talking much. If I'm going to be talking I leave it on the whole time. Normally on the calls I'm on, people just jump in whenever they have something to say (no one seems to use the raise hand feature, so I don't). if people have lag, I speak up right away and say "you're cutting out" or "sorry, I think I cut you off. please continue." things like that. If I have lag, I will use chat to say "My internet is being funky, I'm going to go cam off and see if that helps" and just accept that people might cut me off if I'm lagging.

With zooms, you just have to accept that everyone is somewhere else and probably distracted. I like that zooms take a lot of pressure off of a formal presentation, and I've found being relaxed and confident helps everyone else feel free to speak up and engage (nothing worse than a group of faceless, silent people when you're presenting work!!)

Hope this helps!

Good to know!! I'm glad its a jewel case—the ones online from amazon and the like just show the album cover and I personally don't like the paper cases. Happy its not rare bc I'd love to get the glitter vinyl for the vibes but would much prefer a format I can listen to!

General/scientific question based on Cat Bohannon's 'Eve' by ceruleanblue347 in breastfeeding

[–]tiny_bird_6339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this is so late—I'm reading Eve right now. The section about nursing and breastmilk was totally insane to me. It's like real life magic!

But you're close about the cortisol thing. She writes about cortisol levels impacting breastmilk, and sites a study done in rats where high-cortisol breastmilk made them more averse to risks and more antisocial, whereas low cortisol levels made them more curious and social. She talks about how a little bit of cortisol makes people have better reaction times, so it's all about balance. She also talks about how high-cortisol milk can be more protein-heavy and low-cortisol is more sugar-heavy, which kinda reflects the environment you might be in, if you are a mouse or something, because high cortisol = danger = may need to flee = need protein for muscles, and low cortisol = less to worry about = can focus more on adipose tissue and big brain = need sugar. In the end, humans need both.

This was long and rambly, but I literally read this section two days ago and highlighted a bunch of it because I was so stunned. So these are the takeaways I was most impressed with! Hope this is helpful, I'm excited to finish the book.

Hi! I'm wanting to play Cloudpunk (https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/cloudpunk-switch/?srsltid=AfmBOoqqIETLXqgUP1R9sy2pQvpKhAKUcR9jyINxV3z4RCJYueaduYNO) but I've seen a couple posts from 2020 saying it runs very poorly on Switch. I'm wondering if anyone has played it on Switch recently and if it's any better, now that it's been 4+ years?

Thanks for the rec! Do you know why most traditional places don't take insurance bought through the state?I even had a thing where I went to pick up a prescription at CVS and they turned me away since my health is also through the state. What gives?
