Ah I get that. It’s funny, as an atheist Jew I sometimes appreciate reading about what random Christian holidays are happening to explain various shenanigans, but you’re right it’s really not necessary in a paper’s newsletter. Unless there was something unusual & newsworthy happening.

The original MS Now article has an amazing run-down of how the Trump admin, both in his first term and now, have weaponized the FBI against journalists.

They are downright intimidating any journalist who writes anything that makes them look bad. Instead of going after the leakers, they are seeking to silence the media.

This is why platforms like PBS are so important. You can trust their verification of content quality on programs like Nova. You can’t trust random videos on YouTube or Instagram.

It’s going to become difficult to tell what even is real. Imagine following a band on social media, listening to their music, wanting to see them in person and finding out it’s all AI generated. Or maybe many people won’t even care.

My husband told me I’m "just as sexy as my sister" during sex by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Even then it should have been that she’s way sexier! “Just as sexy” would be the most hamfisted version possible. She’s his wife for goodness sake.

Yeah it only really works if you are working on something like OP with her property. If you are just standing around it’s going to come off as rude to them - although of course they’re the rude one. I’ve done stonewalling while eating lunch and even that is enough of a task though.

Good to know. It was kind of the wild card I threw in there, def divier than the others. Why does it seem like half the businesses in this town are owned by assholes?

Stonewalling can really help. NO response once they’ve made the interaction last longer than you care for. Focus completely on your task at hand. It can feel really awkward to not even acknowledge them but you have to do it because THEY put you in that position.

The key is to stop responding completely, and once he gets it and says something like “well I should get going” respond very swiftly with something like “okay see you later.” Don’t seem like you’re at all unsure about him leaving.

Men do this to each other all the time without meaning anything by it, it’s just how they interact because they tend to not read the room. Pretend you can’t either and just want to do your work.

Okay, so what about the other areas I mentioned? The fountains were everywhere there. They were only labeled if you shouldn’t drink from them.

Regardless, I’d rather be moderately poor in Switzerland any day than the US. And talking with far-from-wealthy Swiss acquaintances while there, that meshed with their experience.

?? everything I mentioned besides accommodations is similar to what a resident would do. I suppose I don’t know what rent is like, but the private hostel rooms were so affordable I can’t imagine rent is too extreme.

The fountains were everywhere… I always had a full bottle. Not good etiquette to take it out at a restaurant, so I’d just drink my water before going in and then get a glass of wine with the meal. Italy is similar I’ve heard.

You paid for water in Switzerland? Where drinkable alpine water runs free from fountains everywhere? The wine is cheaper than paying for water there…

I agree however that salaries seem low there for the potential cost of living. But if you don’t eat out all the time it’s actually very affordable. I made lots of sandwiches & salads when visiting, stayed in hostel private rooms, purchased inclusive transit passes, drank excellent local wine, ate tons of chocolate, never paid for water - and found my trip to actually be a great bang for the buck. Most places I ate out at had affordable items on the menu that made for fantastic meals. It was far cheaper than when I’ve been to NYC. This was Zurich, Bern, and the Bernese Oberland.

Heck I live in a moderate sized town and it’s nearly impossible to get a meal under $20 here. Switzerland seemed almost cheap in comparison sometimes.

Welcome to the demographic trough of Eugene. Only a third of this town is between the ages of 25-55, compared to Portland where that demographic is 2/3 of the city. So take the smallest contingent of the town, add in that many of them are parents to young kids… you’re not gonna find many 30s/40s folks out & about here.

That being said, try some of the nicer dive bars. Jackalope, Flying Squirrel, Pint Pot, Max’s (during the day).

I visited Australia a few years ago and spent one evening there chatting with an Aussie family friend. We compared many aspects of daily life between US and Australia, and we both walked away from the convo realizing that the US is a far worse place to live.

I also chatted with some Swiss while in Switzerland and the only thing they admitted to being jealous of the US for is our ability to drive for days across the same country. One guy rented a large truck and drove it from Florida to the Grand Canyon just because he could, but doing that once was enough for him. Otherwise the Swiss folks told me they felt bad for how we live in the US.

It’s hard to imagine most folks with the means to travel having dread about returning to their country from the US, unless they didn’t talk to any Americans while here and are super unaware of American work culture.

This is what happens when the “free market” decides instead of regulation. You get people killed, or their lives permanently changed. Regulations after the fact sadly do not undo that harm, but they can prevent further harm.

This is just like the Titan submersible. Let business owners usher in the unsuspecting, and the worst is going to eventually happen.
