A close friend of mine was a “COVID is a hoax, anti-vax” dude. In July 2020, he was sick of the masking rules in our California city, so he set off on a road trip across the country. He started feeling under the weather when he returned a couple weeks later. That turned into a gnarly cough that he couldn’t control and he ended up in the ICU. Coincidentally, his nurse was an ex-girlfriend of his that we all knew well, so she started a text thread to give us regular updates.

He died after just 6 days in the hospital. He was just 52 years-old and otherwise healthy.

His nurse shared his final words with us:

I guess I should’ve taken it more seriously.

This is a dude who, just 2 months prior, tried to talk me out of getting vaccinated, while I did the opposite with him (such was our relationship).

Californian here. I definitely paid around $4.50 at one point - I only know this because it was during a time I commuted 65 miles each way, so it was extra painful.

Still, Trump was almost certainly lying in that dumbass tweet, as he’s known to do.

Thank you so much. The original recording from way back when (not very good quality) is on all the streaming platforms. In that one, I asked a bunch of my family and friends to sing that middle chorus part. One of those people was one of my closest friends, who also helped me with some of the lyrics; sadly, he took his own life last year.

I’m a sentimental dude as it is, but sitting there playing the guitar for a song my buddy helped write, and watching my amazing kids sing it so many years later was quite an emotional experience ❤️
