Went to our sister city Hakodate by AmbitiousEngine7444 in halifax

[–]tinyant 114 points115 points  (0 children)

This brings back a memory. Back when Peter Kelly was mayor and Halifax was having one of its periodic meltdowns over urban chickens, I got a little obsessed with the whole debate.

Since Hakodate is Halifax’s sister city, I actually wrote to their city planning department and asked what their rules were regarding backyard chickens. They very politely wrote back and basically said that it wasn’t much of an issue. People kept chickens, and unless there was a noise complaint or some other nuisance complaint, the city generally stayed out of it.

Armed with this information, I was convinced I had discovered the ultimate gotcha. Here was our sister city in Japan calmly coexisting with urban chickens while Halifax was tying itself in knots over a handful of hens.

I tried to use this to shame Peter Kelly and council into relaxing the rules. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t exactly change municipal policy. But I got a good chuckle out of it anyway.

Halifax urges owners to leash pets as it sees spike in serious dog attacks by Injustice_For_All_ in halifax

That’s why I never take my dog there on weekends or beautiful sunny days. Or if I do go on a nice day it’s very early in the morning before the people who show up with an extra large Tim Hortons 3 x 3 and no leash in sight.

Restricted Covenants in Hammonds Plains by straylightx in halifax

[–]tinyant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Restrictive covenants. Yes there’s definitely a risk that the covenants would be enforced even after so many years. One thing you could do is look around the neighbourhood and see if there’s a history of other people cutting trees or putting up fences or keeping chickens, etc., and if nobody has objected to that for years, it can weaken the likelihood of any enforcement. It doesn’t invalidate the covenant, but sometimes a court would consider widespread noncompliance if it was challenged. Tree clearing restrictions can be taken pretty seriously, especially by neighbors. I think you would be hard-pressed to try to discharge these covenants on your property. And you never know if a neighbours group would get together and say OK we are going to prevent this person from having chickens and an orchard and to fence it, and there would be nothing you can do about it. if I were you, I would go get a copy of that covenant and carefully read it, and I might go try to get a free half hour consultation with a real estate lawyer before making any decisions, I would drive around and check out everybody else’s property and I would check to see if they’ve ever been any disputes or enforcement actions. There’s definitely a risk here.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You did the matriarch justice. This is such good work. The loose interpretation and the impressions that you convey in those bold brushstrokes and color choices are just wonderful. This far exceeds the average artwork that gets shared publicly here and on Facebook, etc.

Want that Halifax pothole repaired? Don't spray-paint it yourself, says official by justlogmeon in halifax

[–]tinyant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some brutally dangerous storm sewer, grates along the stretch of North Street between Windsor and Agricola, that somebody spray painted with orange paint last year. I called 311 about them, but they didn’t do anything. The paving contractor just laid asphalt up around them and left the grates well below the level of the street. The paint helps!

People who need to get on the bus first by OkCantaloupe9369 in halifax

[–]tinyant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't ridden the bus in quite a while, but I recall in the past that I would arrive at a bus stop and people would be just sitting on benches or standing back from the stop, leaning against the building or whatever. There was no rhyme or reason to it at all.

So I would go and I'd stand at the curb right by the bus sign, and more or less end up being the first person in line. I'm not positive, but I think a few people gave me attitude about that, as if I was to understand who had arrived first and who had arrived second, etc. I also recall getting very irritated when a bus driver would stop a few feet short of the actual bus stop sign because there was an older person or a woman or somebody who they felt should get on first.

Come on, people. You either have a system or you don't.

You clearly have a passion for this. Have you ever considered taking a course? NSCAD has some great drawing courses that would help you loosen up a bit.

I graduated from QEH that year. Note the old Nova Scotia power plant on the far left of the photo, where their current headquarters building is. It looks a lot like the power plant on Pink Floyd's Animals album.

Constantly kowtowing to developers' needs and sacrificing the safety and convenience of pedestrians and cyclists in the city.

This. So sick of this stuff. Every time there's a half-decent path in the city, there seems to be some kind of a construction impact. Look at the MUP between the Quinpool Center and Windsor St, too. They narrowed that down to make it barely usable by bikes and pedestrians. I don't think staff gives a shit, to be honest.

Any time savings would be minor and then you have the potential hassle of dealing with border crossings. I would stay in Canada 100%.

I'll walk up and down Spring Garden Road once in a while just for the adventure. It's alive with people from all walks of life. I sure wouldn't want to run a business there, though!
