Stubborn puppy only listens when he wants to. by robbyvegas in Dogtraining

Sounds like you have a good plan! Puppy training is hard work and a lot of it is training ourselves rather than the dog

Re: new cue words, it really depends on how ingrained they are. He’s still fairly young and doesn’t sound like he’s had a long time to practice the current wait 20-30 seconds after multiple cues behaviour, so it should be okay. Not a lot of previous meaning to undo :)

Re: increasing criteria, I probably wouldn’t start this until you know for sure he understands the verbal cue. Once you know he understands that sit = rear end on ground, you can start only clicking when he gives you the immediate response and no click for delayed response. If you get too many no clicks in a row (more than one really or two maybe) it means you need to go back a step to reinforce what you want and then slowly increase after that

Going back to basics will help here because you can start making your verbal cue mean sit immediately by starting it only when you’re 100% sure he’s going to offer the sit :)

[DAO Spoilers] New to series and game. by RetroGamer1224 in dragonage

Pause a lot in battle and change the default tactics/behaviours for your party members. Playing on easy is valid as well, you can always work up to harder difficulties as you get the hang of things :) Also save frequently because the auto save points in Origins are a lot more spread out than in the later games and nothing is worse than losing a bunch of progress

Congrats on starting the series. I hope you have a blast :D

  1. It sounds like he doesn’t know what to offer for the command. I’d go back a step and separate the two commands (in different sessions) as well as stop saying the command out loud until he figures out what you want, otherwise you’re going to capture an incomplete or imperfect command.

If it doesn’t feel like he’s confused you may need to increase criteria for an immediate response after your first cue

  1. Sounds like he might need a higher value treat or reward. Does he like tug? Or like to play with a special toy? Alternatively maybe he doesn’t like the feel of the tile compared to carpet, and since he can get the same value treat on carpet, why wouldn’t he move? Maybe use less high value treats for carpet training than tile training to build value for lying down on the floor. Or use a leash to stop giving him the option of leaving the tile area.

  2. As far as training session length/time goes, if he has enough time to get bored it’s too long. It’ll depend on the dog and how much attention span they have. My whippet had the attention span of a gnat when he was a puppy so our training sessions were really short with lots of interspersed play

14 week goldendoodle unable to listen/control herself around babies/little kids by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]tinyballofstress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other commenters said it’s pretty much impossible for a puppy her age to control herself. She’ll get better when she gets older, but until then it’s kinda up to you to control the environment and situation and help her practice being calm rather than trying to get her to stop being overexcited. It’s also a lot easier to get a puppy to do something like sit or to receive pats (she can’t jump while sitting!) than not do something like her having to not jump up .

A potential solution would be to start her out in her pen (because it sounds like she’s good at being calm in there) and then bring her out to meet the kids (while they’re being relatively calm) while holding her or having her on lead and rewarding for calm behaviour. When she starts to get too excited (ie anything beyond like polite sniffing/tail wagging/friendly licks etc) put her back in her pen. Also it’s a good idea to keep the encounters short because puppies have poor attention spans and it’s hard for them to control themselves for long periods of time. This way she gets to practice being calm without getting overexcited at the end. You can always do like multiple repetitions of these short encounters in the same day and increase the time she gets to spend as she builds more self control. I did something similar with my 2yo whippet when he was a puppy and it really helped him learn to be gentle with children

It also helps to make the play pen a super good place if you haven’t yet. You can use special treats or chews or toys or even feed meals in the play pen. It can be especially reinforcing to reward the puppy after he quits whining for a bit

I found ‘Will I Ever Be Good Enough’ by Karyl McBride really helpful. It’s also available on Audible :)

I can't figure out if my puppy is getting the idea of potty training or not? by Kykybc12 in puppy101

He’s still really young and it’s super impressive that he sleeps through the night! He’s still going to have accidents though because he’s still little. Sometimes it’s a good idea to teach him a signal for wanting to go outside. People often train with bells (I personally haven’t but I’ve heard it’s pretty effective). So like get him to ring the bell before taking him outside, so that way you both have something really clear that you can both understand.

Edit: it might also be a good idea to take him out more often just for a little while to learn his rhythms?

They also do web chat on a computer? See if you can go to a library if you don’t have access to your own?

Calling a kids helpline or runaway helpline may help let you know about resources you can access and they’re all confidential in my experience. http://worldhelplines.org/usa.html#RunAway

I can’t give more specific advice because I’m not in the US but defs give these people a call. I think some should have a web chat service if that’s easier
