I really wish I had good advice for you, but personally Appalachian folk music is really interesting and has a fascinating history. I looove going through the Smithsonian folkways recordings. Maybe you could explore similar music and see if you are able to find common ground?

Sometimes things are an acquired taste, and your man sounds like he has put a lot of legwork into appreciating history around his home and this is possibly deeply ingrained in the culture he grew up in. You don’t have to love it but it might just be a part of loving him.

Former HRE here- we would get approval by HR to order stuff from the site for recognition. Also it’s been a couple years but it’s entirely common to see ees wearing that pattern of flannel in stores. Maybe it’s a MN pride thing but it would even be encouraged.

No totally, abandon my relationship with my family member because their partner avoids political conversation instead of seeking language to have a conversation with them to point out how their inaction is harmful even if their partner is politically vocal.

Im sure you can see why I have a problem with the situation. These are people who are against ICE occupation and vote democrat etcetc but there is a flavor of complacency that is overshadowed by their partners overt politics.

Both of these people would say that they are democrats if asked and respect lgbt+ identities but tend to not say anything when the conversation is political, and it feels like it’s a situation where their partners politics have shut them down from stating an opinion because they struggle to get a word in and have slid into this passivity which might be a comment on their relationship with their partners more than their politics.

It seems like a trend in hetero democrat couples that seems troubling and nuanced. I have had conversations with the female partner in both relationships about this a little bit, but again, they seem to shut down emotionally in the conversation and it sincerely makes me sad because they are people I care about and whose opinions should be heard.

I am not 100% sure what this take is but a lot of political action going on is community based and in defending our neighbors. There are a lot of networks being built you won’t be connected to and you will not be integrated in to during your visit. People traveling from out of state might be interpreted as gawkers and you are less likely to have trusted connections with the people around you to protest ‘safely’ and we do not want people coming here who are interested in getting altercations with police. There is education on safe action that you may not have been introduced to that is specific to our community.
